The Engagement of the Baron of Flowers and the Withered Tree Lady.
Chapter 67 Julia’s Magic Lesson
“Lady Julia, you are amazing. A genius. As expected of the daughter of the Minister of Defense.”
An hour after starting to learn how to deploy a shield, Julia was praised like this by an excited Ramey. Moreover,
“Now, even if Baron Romand is away, the mansion will be safe. You can cover this entire large room with a shield. Right, Mr. Butler?”
Being told this made Julia happy. It might be a bit different from what she desired, but she was still glad if she could be of any help to the Plant Baron family. Especially if it meant protecting the people important to Romand.
However, neither of the two spirit users noticed that Butler Hyde, Maid Sharie, and Maid Viola were all bewildered and staring blankly.
✽
“Lady Julia. First, think of Viola. Then, strongly will it. That you want to protect her….”
When Ramey told her this for the first time, Julia looked at Viola, who was standing in the corner of the guest room. She then thought,
From now on, I will definitely protect you. I won’t let you experience such horrible things ever again.
And then she willed it strongly.
‘I want to protect her. Please lend me your power, spirits. Please!’
A faint moss green light emitted from Julia’s body. It appeared as a beam of light directed towards Viola. However, the light disappeared in an instant.
“That was amazing. To be able to emit a shield on the first try. It was a beautiful moss green light, just like Fermeel.”
Ramey was astonished. Come to think of it, she had said it took her two whole days just to emit light.
But that was probably because she was still very young at the time. And her instructor was younger than her and a spirit user of a different type than Fermeel.
“Thank you. It was indeed the same color as the defense shield created by Marquis Sandbeck. But is this different from the color of your shield, Lady Ramey?”
Julia asked, and Ramey nodded.
“My color is a pale lemon yellow. Perhaps the name of the spirit users comes from the color of their shields.”
“That might be true. But since ‘Moss Green Spirit User’ is a bit long, they might have simply shortened it to ‘Green Spirit User.'”
Julia and Ramey laughed as they talked about this, but the butler, maid, and housekeeper around them were just staring in amazement.
Eventually, Viola timidly spoke up.
“Um, did that shield magic work?”
“Huh?”
Julia blinked in surprise and then quickly recalled the evening of the soirée.
When Marquis Sandbeck deployed a large dome-shaped defense shield, Julia was astonished, but everyone else seemed indifferent.
Come to think of it, the special forces who hadn’t seen the glow of the coronet hadn’t known that Julia was a spirit user until she noticed the shield.
Ordinary people can’t see it. The power of the spirits. So then…
“So, was Lady Ramey’s healing magic invisible to everyone but me? That beautiful golden light…”
“Yes. It seems that the spells used by spirit users can only be seen by other spirit users. That’s why neither I nor my family realized I was a spirit user until Lord Fermeel pointed it out after our engagement. I always talked with the spirits in my heart, but I never thought it was anything special.”
“I understand. I’ve been friends with the spirits since I was a child and thought of them as my first friends. But since I spoke out loud to them, my mother realized about the spirits fairly early on. My mother came from a farming family, so she had some knowledge about the ‘Green Thumb’ and ‘Green Spirit Users.’ Although she wasn’t aware of my father’s abilities, she seemed to have suspected it.”
Ramey looked a little sad at Julia’s words.
“I heard that your mother passed away. And that you rarely got to see your father. It must have been hard not being able to talk to anyone about your abilities, and you had to keep them secret to avoid them being misused by others, right?”
“Yes, but my mother and I were rather carefree and didn’t think too deeply about it. We were almost taken advantage of, but Lord Romand’s mother helped us. Thanks to her, we are able to live safely now.”
“Oh my, so it’s true that you and Baron Romand have known each other since childhood?”
“Yes, Lord Romand was my first love.”
“Oh my! So the romantic tales about Baron Romand were true. How wonderful. Baron Romand must have been beautiful since he was a child. I would have loved to see him as a handsome young boy.”
Ramey clasped her hands and spoke dreamily, making Julia feel embarrassed. Although it was true that they were each other’s first love, that rumor was a script written by Julia’s father, Earl Woodcliff.
Moreover, Julia’s first love was a chubby and freckled boy named Lord. When they reunited, his name and appearance had changed so much that she didn’t realize Romand was the same person as her first love… this truth was something she could never reveal.
Julia and Hyde, who knew the truth, exchanged a tense smile.
Viola interjected again.
“I’m sorry, but what happened with the magic in the end?”
Julia and Ramey looked at each other, startled, and finally regained their composure. Ramey then answered.
“Yes. It’s not perfect yet, but a shield was deployed. This is quite remarkable. I don’t think anyone could do it on their first try. It must have been possible because Julia’s desire to protect you was so strong.”
Hearing this, Viola couldn’t help but tear up. In her heart, she strongly vowed to protect her lady no matter what.
Then, Ramey asked Julia a question.
“Do you know the name of your spirit, Lady Julia?”
“Yes,” Julia answered. Then Ramey said,
“When you make a request next time, call upon your spirit by name at the end. That way, the spirit will clearly recognize that they are the one being asked.”
So Julia made her wish more specifically and called out her spirit’s name at the end.
“Please deploy a shield to protect Viola by the door. Please, Spati!”
Then a moss-green light shot out from Julia’s body and headed straight towards Viola. This time, the light covered her entire body.
After just about two hours of lessons, Julia became able to deploy a shield freely, even covering the entire room. To help the special three who knew about Julia’s unique ability understand the invisible shield, she shielded Sharie and Hyde in turn after Viola.
When inside the shield, you can see others, but you can’t hear them. Conversely, from outside the shield, you can’t see the person inside, or more strangely, you don’t feel their presence.
Through their own experiences, the three finally acknowledged the existence of this magic. They then reaffirmed their vow to never let their lady’s secret slip to anyone else.
