Chapter 41: One Book

On the morning of the third day, since Mer-san told all dragons they would need to choose between dying on their own or dying in her hands, there were no more dragons left in the Dragroar Kingdom. The only ones left were Mer-san, me, Conrad-san, and Elsa-san. Four of us in total.

“Now that all the nuisance is gone, things have become much more comfortable, hasn’t it?”

“A-Ahahaha..”

I forced a wry smile in response to Mer-san’s words, who was basking in the warm morning sun on the castle balcony. She was smiling so cheerfully. Well, I didn’t miss the dragons who had abandoned Mer-san either. In fact, I was rather relieved to know they were all gone, but still… I couldn’t help wondering what would happen to the Dragroar Kingdom from here on. 

“Gil-kun, what shall we do today? We could go out somewhere or we could also spend the entire day lounging in bed and indulging in slothfulness. Yeah, staying all cooped up inside doesn’t sound so bad.”

“Well…”

Yesterday, the two of us toured the city and we came across all sorts of unusual buildings. It was fun, but… When some of the remaining dragons caught sight of us, they immediately ran away in fear. That scene left a strange, indescribable feeling in my heart, but still… 

“Then… Would it be alright if I spent the whole day reading today?”

“Reading, you say?”

“Yes.”

Actually… I discovered there was a library inside the castle yesterday. I had picked up a random book and flipped through the pages, but much to my surprise, the book was written in languages I had never seen before. I would have to decipher everything from scratch, which might seem like a daunting task, but at the same time, I was thrilled. I was pounding with excitement to conquer the books in the library. More importantly…

“By reading the books from this kingdom, I can learn more about dragons and by extension… I can learn more about you, Mer-san. And if I learn the language of this kingdom, we could exchange letters and not to mention, I would be able to support you even more than I do now.”

As a child myself, I was aware there were plenty of things I couldn’t do. I was well aware I wasn’t useful to Mer-san. Madam Polke and the other servants used to call me useless and to be honest, they weren’t exactly wrong. Of course, Mer-san had convinced me that I wasn’t useless and thanks to that, I started to believe in her as well, but… I knew there were things that I could and couldn’t do. 

Hence why, I wanted to get better. I wanted to be able to do a lot of things, to be more capable and… Even if it was just a little, I wanted to do my best for the sake of Mer-san, someone that I loved so much..

Wait, huh?!

“Wh-Whoa?!”

“Geez! Gil-kun, that’s a foul move! You’re too adorable!

Overcome with emotion, Mer-san hugged me tightly. Of course, I was really happy with this obvious display of affection, but since Mer-san always hugged me so suddenly like this, I couldn’t stop myself from getting a bit surprised in return. 

“In that case, then let’s head straight to the library! Fufu~ I shall personally guide you every step of the way, Gil-kun.”

“Ehehe… I will be in your care, Mer-san.”

And so, Mel-san and I made our way to the library.

“Uwaaah…!”

Seeing it up close again, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of books—it was hard to know where to even start.

“The books on this shelf contain records of the kingdom’s history and weather patterns. That shelf holds epic poetry and various tales. And over here, we have…”

Mer-san pointed to the shelves as she explained the collections of the library to me. She must’ve immediately realized that I was lost and didn’t know what to do.

Really… Mer-san is really kind…

“Mer-san, what about that? What’s the book with a magic circle drawn on the spine about?”

“Ah, that one is a compilation of dragon magic…”

“Dragon magic…?”

“Yes.”

According to Mer-san, dragons not only have massive fangs, sharp claws, and breath attacks but they also had unique magic of their own. 

“In my case, I mainly use dark attribute magic and dark attribute magic is quite powerful, you know? Basically, dragon’s magic is on a completely different level from human magic… Ah, but of course, Gil-kun’s healing magic is on a whole nother level as well! Your healing magic is simply unparalleled!”

Mer-san had been speaking about dragon magic so proudly, but the moment she made the comparison to humans, she hastily added a clarification because she was being considerate of me. 

Ahahaha… She doesn’t need to be so considerate of me though. I already know she didn’t mean any malice when she said that to me.

“Mer-san, you’re really kind…”

“Fufufu~ Thank you, but I’m only kind to you, Gil-kun.”

“Yes! That actually makes me even happier!”

“Gil-kun… Ah, I can’t. I can’t take it anymore! I’m supposed to teach you everything about the books here, but now I just want to take you back to my room and dote on you as much as I can…”

Mer-san’s face turned bright red and her breathing grew heavy. 

Err… But she’s kind of scary when she’s like this. 

“Ah! Ahem…! Anyway, though you can’t use the magic recorded in these books, but they could still be useful as a reference. And who knows? Maybe we can find something related to your healing magic.”

Noticing my reaction, Mer-san snapped back to her senses. She cleared her throat and continued on.

According to Mer-san and the others, my healing magic, something that I always deemed as something insignificant, was actually quite special. Reading the books at the library might serve as a good opportunity to find out more about my healing magic. 

Even though we had defeated Klaus and all dragons had fled from the kingdom, but there was no guarantee that the dragons wouldn’t try to take Mer-san’s life again in the future. Not to mention… The things that Klaus had said in his final moment. The existence of a goddess and something known as her beloved children. Seeing how many uncertainties we had in the future, I had to do everything I could to ensure our happiness. 

“Mer-san, please teach me everything about these books.”

“Of course. Let’s study together.”

While hugging a book about dragon magic close to my chest, I took Mer-san’s hand and we returned to our room.
