※Mercedes Drake Fafnir’s POV
“I’m so glad… I’m so, so glad…”
While chasing after Klaus, I clutched both hands in front of my chest in relief. I was truly relieved from the bottom of my heart. That enormous beam that Reiner had released looked like it could consume Gil-kun whole. I feared that the most important person to me in the world would disappear due to that beam, but Gil-kun was still alive. He had survived. He was able to stay alive thanks to the healing magic he had used to save me before.
“Hic… Even though he’s small and incredibly cute, he’s actually hiding amazing power in his body… How unfair…”
I muttered while shedding tears, but deep down, I was overwhelmingly grateful that Gil-kun possessed the power of healing magic. Yes. I was grateful since he was able to protect himself thanks to that power. The power of the breath that Reiner had released was comparable to that of Fafnir’s breath… No. Maybe it was even more powerful than ours. I wouldn’t have come out unscathed if I were to take that attack. But… To think Gil-kun could continue to heal himself… To think his healing rate was faster than the beam’s damage…
“…Then, there’s only one thing left I need to do.”
Gil-kun had put his life on the line and worked so hard for me. He did all of that for my sake. I had to prepare the best possible outcome so I could tell Gil-kun a joyous report once he woke up. After all, Gil-kun had lost his consciousness after exhausting his magic power from casting all that healing magic.
I opened my mouth to summon a jet-black magic circle. Of course, I had to make Klaus suffer the same fate as Gil-kun at the hands of Reiner. Klaus was still running away like a scaredy rat. How pathetic.
“GROOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!”
With a deafening roar, a black beam wrapped in purple lightning charged toward Klaus.
Fufu… Now then, will you die like the pathetic rat you are without being able to dodge, or will you try to bear it like Gil-kun did? Well, not like you can survive through it like Gil-kun though.
“G-GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!”
Refusing to yield, Klaus summoned a white magic circle and released a breath of white beam. My black breath collided with his white breath, causing an overwhelming shockwave to echo through the vast sky.
But…
“GR-GRRRRRAAAH….”
Klaus continued to release the beam and resist with all of his might, but my black breath was relentless. I kept pushing forward without any hesitation. Of course. There was no way someone like Klaus could stop my breath attack.
“Tch-!”
Perhaps realizing he wouldn’t be able to come out unscathed, Klaus quickly twisted his body to dodge the black breath. Seeing that, I understood that the reason he tried to withstand the breath with his own was to buy time to avoid it.
“Being a weakling must be tough, huh? You can’t even dodge properly, let alone defend through my attack without resorting to petty tricks.”
I placed my right hand on my mouth and chuckled softly. Now that Gil-kun had taken away two of his trump cards, Klaus didn’t have any chance to win against me. That said… I couldn’t afford to let my guard down. This was Klaus we were dealing with. I had to be careful and take my time with him.
“So? What’s next? Are we going to play tag again?”
“…”
Klaus glared at me. His eyes were filled with malice toward me.
But… Fufu… You look rather pale, you know?
“….You should be still suffering from the poison and yet, you look perfectly healthy. Is this the work of that human child too?”
“Oh my? Are you trying to buy time again? Well, yes. It wouldn’t be fun to kill you right away, so fine. I will entertain you. That’s right. It’s all thanks to Gil-kun.”
Yes. Gil-kun had saved me with his warm little hands. Well, maybe that was a bit misleading. To be precise, I was saved by his kindness. The kindness from my dearest, most beloved person… The person who had saved me while I was badly injured. As a human, Gil-kun was afraid of me. It wouldn’t be strange for him to run away upon seeing me. Not to mention, I had tried to push him away too. In fact, he should’ve run away, but… He didn’t. Seeing how injured I was, he pitied me. He reached his hand out and gave me many warm and comforting words as he healed me.
Even after that, despite the fact that he had no chance of winning against a dragon, let alone two dragons, he still tried to protect me. He allowed himself to get hurt for my sake. The pain didn’t deter him either. He fought on, resisting my pursuer with all of his might. He had done the same during this Royal Selection. Gil-kun protected Conrad and Elsa. He healed them and successfully crushed Klaus’ plot, defeating Reiner in the process.
Heh… Just look. Conrad and Elsa finally finished defeating all the other dragons. Those two had understood how kind and powerful Gil-kun was. That was why they fought so hard.
Yes… Gil-kun had a special power. No. Not his extraordinary healing magic that could heal everything. Not that. It was his noble, strong, and warm soul that stirred our hearts.
“Have you had enough? Then, hurry up and die.”
“Yeah, starting from you!”
I said that to him in an exasperated tone and Klaus lifted the corner of his mouth into a smirk. Within that second, multiple magic circles appeared around me, surrounding me in all directions—up, down, front, back, and sides.
“Did you think I was just running away for no reason?!”
“Tch…!”
Just as expected, he had prepared another trump card to defeat me. The cunning Klaus, who had gained Fafnir’s trust over the years only to poison us and deliberately challenged the previous king to the Royal Selection…. There was no way someone like him would entrust all of his trump cards to Reiner. He would surely keep something for himself.
I quickly reversed course, trying to escape from the encirclement of magic circles.
“Not so fast!”
“Ah… Gil-kun…”
A total of six magic circles activated simultaneously. They emitted bright white light before an exceptionally loud explosion echoed through the sky.
“Kukuku… Ahahahahahahaha! I did it! I did it! I have finally defeated the world’s enemy…! I’ve defeated all of Fafnir!!”
Raising both fists to the sky, Klaus trembled with joy. He had endured long years of hardship to reach his dream… To stand at the peak of dragons… No. To stand at the peak of the world and finally, he had acquired the means to defeat his nemesis, Fafnir. He claimed that seat. His effort had finally been rewarded. An eternity of glory awaited Klaus Drache Lindwurm….
“…What a ridiculous way of thinking.”
“-?!”
Grabbing Lindwurm’s neck from behind, the corner of my lips curled up into a smirk.
Fufu… I can easily tell what you were thinking just now from the look on your face alone… And I can also know what you’re thinking at this very moment… So, let me tell you… With all the disdain in my heart…
“You idiot.”
