Chapter 31: Challenging the Blue Dragon

“Tch… Looks like I have to step in after all.”

After staying on the sidelines and only giving orders until now, Reiner finally made his move. He joined the battle while swinging his greatsword at Conrad-san. However, his strike was easily blocked by Conrad-san, and Reiner quickly distanced himself from Conrad-san.

“…What made you suddenly decide to join the battle?”

“Nothing in particular. It’s annoying to admit it, but that brat is right. Standing by and doing nothing won’t get us anywhere.”

Conrad-san asked and Reiner spat out his response. But… It seemed  this man finally took the bait.

“Conrad-san! Elsa-san!”

“Yeah! Leave it to us!”

“We just need to prioritize defeating this man. The other dragons are just small fry. After we defeat him, victory will be ours.”

Indeed. Reiner was the one in control of the dragons while Klaus was fighting Mer-san. If we could defeat this man, everything should have gone smoothly for us. However, I couldn’t let my guard down. Knowing this man, he might have still been hiding some kind of plan.

“GROOOOOOOAAAAAAHHH!!”

“Too weak!”

Conrad-san swung his glaive down with a roar, but Reiner easily parried the attack. Just as we had expected, this man’s abilities were head and shoulders above the other dragons. 

“Haha! You’re pretty good! Then… How about this?!”

Smirking, Conrad-san started unleashing a relentless series of strikes, not giving Reiner a chance to catch his breath. Despite that, Reiner parried and dodged each attack. 

“Got you now.”

“Don’t underestimate me!!”

Taking advantage of the opening, Elsa-san got behind Reiner and thrusted her kukri knife downward. However, Reiner used the recoil from deflecting the glaive to spin around, countering Elsa-san’s attack with a horizontal swing of his greatsword. Unable to withstand the force from the greatsword, Elsa-san jumped backwards. 

“What are you all doing?! You guys, get over here and help!”

“””YE-YES!”””

The dragons, who had been staring blankly at the three-way battle up until now, snapped back to reality and charged at Conrad-san and Elsa-san.

Even though the dragons have been hesitating… They’ve recovered their morale now…

The dragons’ face, which had been clouded with fear before, was now painted in a new profound courage. This was all thanks to Reiner stepping into the fight himself. He showed them that he was able to deal with Conrad-san and Elsa-san in a 2 vs 1 battle. The other dragons’ morale had been restored thanks to this feat. The blue dragon really knew how to seize the right moment. 

“ORAHHH! I will hold them back, so you all keep on going! Keep pressuring them!”

“Mmh…!”

Conrad-san grunted as he withstood the wave of attacks from the dragons. When the fight first started, the dragons had all rushed in at once, but since their coordination wasn’t perfect, they were losing against Conrad-san. Midway through, they became hesitant due to their fear of Conrad-san’s strength. However, now that their morale had been restored, they were able to attack Conrad-san and Elsa-san relentlessly. Even for someone like Conrad-san, it would be difficult to break through the relentless waves of attack unscatched. As for Elsa-san, although her ability to use poison and her speed had allowed her to push the tide of battle in her favor, but from what I could see, it seemed she wasn’t good at handling large numbers of opponents at the same time. If they were to overwhelm her with sheer numbers, it would be hard for her to maneuver with ease. 

This is bad…

What worried me the most was Reiner. He had gained some leeway and returned to his previous spot since the other dragons had joined the fight. If we didn’t keep Reiner occupied, he might take this as an opportunity to interfere with the Royal Selection. We couldn’t scratch the possibility that he might be hiding a weapon to defeat Mer-san. We didn’t know what he had up his sleeve, so…

“Elsa-san! Over here!”

“Understood!”

Kicking the dragon in front of her, Elsa-san broke away from the pursuing dragons and moved behind Conrad-san.

“Gilbert-sama.”

“I’m sorry, but please let me ride on your back!”

“What!?”

Conrad-san shouted in surprise as he sent a dragon flying with a powerful strike of his glaive.

“Young Master Gil! You don’t need to do that! I will be sure to protect you!”

“I understand that much, but…! At this rate, that man will be able to do whatever he wants…”

While observing Reiner, who was still giving orders to the dragons and watching Mer-san fighting Klaus, I could say one thing for sure. No matter what, we had to drag Reiner into battle. 

“That’s why, I will go with Elsa-san! Since that guy Klaus is itching to kill me, he won’t be able to ignore me when I’m joining the frontline.”

“Conrad-sama, please leave Gilbert-sama to me. I will protect Gilbert-sama even if I need to forfeit my life in return.”

“Mmm… Fine.”

Elsa-san agreed to my plan while Conrad-san still looked doubtful. In the end, he reluctantly nodded his head in agreement. With Elsa-san’s high agility, she should be able to get close to Reiner and pursue him so he wouldn’t be able to escape. Moreover, we could also avoid giving him a chance to use his mysterious weapon like before. 

And then…

“Conrad-san, I’m sorry. This plan will put a lot of pressure on you, but…”

“Leave it to me! I won’t let those other dragons disturb you and Elsa!”

He slammed his fist on his chest and nodded confidently. 

Alright…. It’s time for the final stretch. 

“Elsa-san, please. I’m relying on you.”

“Leave it to me. I will fulfill my duty even at the cost of my life.”

“No. I would never let you die.”

Reiner still hadn’t shown us his true strength. Elsa-san might not be able to defeat him, but even so, I would protect her with my insignificant healing magic. We would work together to force Reiner to show us his hidden fangs. 

“…Yes. Please protect this lowly Elsa, Gilbert-sama.”

“Yes!”

“Young Master Gilbert! Elsa! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”

Conrad-san slashed through the dragons in front of him, paving the way for us. Elsa-san and I rushed from behind him and flew through the air toward Reiner, who was giving orders at the farthest point from us.
