ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Wha-…. What…?”
“CONRAD-SAN?!”
A sharp, slicing sound cut through the air and the next thing I knew, there was a gaping hole in Conrad-san’s stomach.
What…? What just happened…? Why… Why, why, why!?
“Hyahahaha! Thank goodness you guys are so damn gullible!”
The blue dragon covered its face with one hand and threw its head back in laughter. I knew it. It was them after all…!
“What the hell did you do?!”
“You idiot. Like hell I’d tell you, dumbass! Die already.”
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
“Ugh…! Arghh…!! Ghh…!”
Another gust of wind and one after another, holes opened in Conrad-san’s body. His shoulder, his leg and his right chest. Conrad-san coughed up a mouthful of bright red blood.
How the hell are they doing this…? What are they hiding…?
“How does it feel? Hurts like hell, doesn’t it? Dragons don’t get injured often, so we’re not used to pain.”
“Yo-You….”
The blue dragon brought his face to Conrad-san, who was suffering from agonizing pain. The blue dragon had the most vile grin imaginable. Conrad-san tried to raise his hand, but his strength was failing him.
“Hyahahahaha! Idiot! Once you lot are out of the picture, we are the only ones left to witness the Royal Selection! I believe you know what I’m talking about, don’t you?!”
I see… The legitimacy of the Royal Selection was proven by the existence of the corpse of the defeated and the dragons who witnessed it. Mer-san only had us on her side. If we were out of the picture, then the only ones left to confirm the victor would be these dragons, the ones on Klaus’ side.
Well, not that it matters now. After all, there isn’t a single dragon in the Dragroar Kingdom who sides with Mer-san.
“Ugh…. Agghh… Do-Don’t worry…. Young Master Gil…. I… I will definitely… Protect you…”
Despite struggling even to breathe, Conrad-san still forced himself to show me a gentle smile. He was doing it for me, to calm me down.
“Like hell you will! Once you’re down, that human is going to get slammed into the ground!”
“UGH-?!”
Another sharp slicing sound tore through the air and Conrad-san’s body was hit once more.
Please… I need to figure it out… Where the attacks are coming from and who’s launching them… If I can know then…!
Conrad-san’s face twisted in pain. I bit my lip, hard enough to draw blood.
“Bwah—!?”
Seemingly unable to hold it any longer, Conrad-san sprayed a mist of blood. His body at his limit. At this rate…
Whooosh!
“Ugh…! Arrghhh…!”
“Hyahahaha! Hihihihihi! Just die already! You better die soon while there’s something left of your body!”
Another hole tore through Conrad-san’s body as the blue dragon rolled on the ground, cackling like a madman. But… The splatter of the blood showed me the direction where the attack had come from.
“Elsa-san! At two o’clock direction!!”
I screamed at the top of my lungs, pouring every ounce of strength I had into my voice. We had to take them down, no matter what. I couldn’t let Conrad-san’s pain, his suffering, be for nothing.
“GYAAAAAAAAAAAHHH?!?!?! I-I’M MELTINGGGGGG?!?!”
I turned my head into the direction of a dragon’s agonized scream and there I saw it.
“How dare you resort to such cowardly tricks…!”
Elsa-san, trembling with fury, was dissolving a gray dragon with her acidic breath. The gray dragon had a strange, crossbow-like weapon clutched in its hands.
“Tch! Hurry up and retrieve that weapon! That’s the one thing we cannot lose!”
The blue dragon’s expression turned into a panic as he rushed toward Elsa-san and the gray dragon. But—before he could reach them, both the dragon and the weapon had completely melted away, turning into liquid and vanishing into the depths of the Dark Forest.
“Grrrrr…!!”
The blue dragon gritted his teeth in frustration. That weapon must be their secret ace to defeat Mer-san. Mer-san might be the strongest dragon, but even she wouldn’t be able to defend against an attack if she didn’t know where it came from or how it was being launched. I wondered why the dragons had such a weapon in the first place, but that could wait.
Right now, I…
“Ughh….. Huh?”
The faint light overflowing from my small hands enveloped Conrad-san, sealing all the gaping wounds. This was the healing magic that had saved Mer-san.
“O-Ooh… This is…”
Conrad-san gasped in surprise upon seeing his body healing in an instant. My body felt incredibly heavy since I had exerted a lot of energy into healing Conrad-san, but… I had to see this battle through until the end. Mer-san, Conrad-san, and Elsa-san… I would never let any of them die!
“…”
“””….”””
When I looked up, the blue dragon, the other dragons, and even Elsa-san were all staring at me in stunned silence. My useless, insignificant magic… But… This was also the same magic that had saved Mer-san. The magic that had earned me so much praise from her… My very own healing magic. With this magic, I would protect the things most precious to me.
“Hahahahaha! Young Master Gil! How impressive! Who would’ve thought Young Master Gil was such a skilled healer!”
“Ah… Ehehehe….”
Conrad-san beamed at me, praising me with a radiant smile. Feeling overjoyed, I couldn’t help but blush.
“Gilbert-sama, allow me to once again express both my apology and my gratitude. I can clearly see that it was your healing magic that truly saved Her Highness Mercedes.”
While the enemy was still in shock, Elsa-san had rejoined us. Her expression almost seemed… Exhilarated.
“N-No, not at all! If anything, I should be thanking you! It’s all thanks to you, Elsa-san, that we’re still alive!”
Anticipating that Klaus and his group would try something, we had turned the very rules of the Royal Selection against them to devise our own countermeasure. The plan was to use Conrad-san as bait to dismantle the enemy’s scheme. Since we knew Klaus wouldn’t be able defeat Mer-san with his power alone, we had assumed he would try to pull something against Mer-san, probably something other than poison. So, Conrad-san had to take on all the dragons except Klaus himself. Due to the rules of the Royal Selection, they couldn’t support Klaus in his fight against Mer-san unless they eliminated us first, since we served as Mer-san’s witnesses. Meaning, they couldn’t use their underhanded tactics on Mer-san if we were still alive. But for that, they would need to use whatever they originally intended for Mer-san on Conrad-san instead, since Conrad-san wasn’t a weak dragon at all. From what I had heard, Conrad-san was said to be the strongest dragon in the Dragroar Kingdom after the Fafnir family. Which meant, Conrad-san was on par with Klaus. So, Conrad-san should be able to handle the other dragons himself…. Or so he said. No. Or so Mer-san said.
The moment they used whatever they had in plan for Mer-san on Conrad-san, Elsa-san, who had distanced herself from us and was observing the battlefield from high above to avoid detection, would launch a sudden attack and neutralize it. But to be honest.. It was a gamble. There was a real risk that Conrad-san could be killed before we even identified their weapon and there was also a chance that Elsa-san might fail. Most of all, if my healing magic hadn’t worked on Conrad-san…
“Ahahaha… Now that it’s over, my hands are shaking…”
I let out a small laugh as I stared at my trembling hands.
It really… Really worked…
Clenching my fist, I savored the triumph of our plan coming together. And at that moment—
“Reinerrrrrrrrr!! Kill that human brat!! You have to kill him no matter what!!”
Klaus, who had been running from Mer-san, let out a furious scream toward the blue dragon—Reiner.
