“Gil-kun… Please wake up.”
“Mnn…”
Shaken awake, I rubbed my eyes. As I slowly opened my eyes, Mer-san’s stern expression came into view.
“W-What’s wrong!?”
“That.”
Mer-san pointed toward the sky and within the night sky, which was dotted with twinkling stars, a large blue dragon was hovering over us. Around the blue dragon, there were numerous other dragons as well.
“Fufu~ Fret not. I just thought it would be better for you to wake up for this, just to be safe.”
“I-I see…”
Despite seeing a large group of dragons led by the blue dragon, Mer-san was smiling nonchalantly, as if nothing was wrong, just like always. This must be because she had so much confidence in her own strength, but still, I couldn’t stop myself from hoping she wouldn’t get hurt.
“Haha, please don’t worry, Gilbert-dono. For the princess, those creatures are no more than flies. Besides, I’m also here.”
“Whoa-?!”
Conrad-san said while ruffling my hair.
Wha-What’s this… How do I explain it… Suddenly, it feels the distance between us has grown closer?
“That’s right. Just watch from here with the princess. I’ll let you witness the power of the Dragroar Kingdom’s Royal Guard Captain, Conrad Gargouille.”
Conrad-san said while grinning ferociously and then, he changed his form into that of a gigantic red dragon.
“GROOOOAAAAAAAR! In the Royal Selection, no other dragons are allowed to interfere with the king or the challengers! Soldiers! Why are you all here?! State your purpose!”
“””-?!?!”””
Conrad-san’s tremendous roar shook the air, and the dragons flying above trembled in fear… Except for the blue dragon.
“Ha! I know that! I’m here just to check if Princess-san is really serious about the Royal Selection or not!”
Despite still being in the form of a dragon, the blue dragon managed to shrug his shoulders. It was pretty amazing to see him still behaving like a human in the form of a dragon. That said, the blue dragon’s manner of speaking and attitude made him appear incredibly frivolous.
Not to mention… He was staring at Mer-san lecherously. Like a predator licking its lips in front of its prey.
“Then turn back immediately! This is not a place for you!”
“Well, even if you say that~ You see, I’m in a bit of a bind here. I’m here by the order of His Majesty Klaus.”
He was ordered by Klaus, huh… In other words, Klaus was very wary of Mer-san. From what I had heard so far, the Fafnir family was said to be the strongest dragonkin family and even though Klaus had resorted to using sneaky tricks like poison, it still had taken him three days and nights to defeat the former king. Given the immense gap between their power, I guess it was understandable to see Klaus this wary of Mer-san.
“But still… Just like His Majesty said, you two are really siding with Princess-san, huh? Well, the old man was annoying from the start. I already hate your guts, so might as well take care of you along with Princess-san.”
“Grrr… Watch your mouth. I’m not someone who can be defeated by the likes of you.”
Though Conrad was trying to appear calm, but it was obvious to see he was enraged to hear the blue dragon’s taunt. However, it seemed that rage didn’t blossom because the blue dragon had disrespected him. It seemed he was more angry that the blue dragon had disrespected Mer-san instead.
In that case…
“Hmm… So dragons are cowardly creatures, huh?”
“…What’s with that human brat?”
I said with a voice filled with sarcasm and the blue dragon twisted his face to glare at me.
I’m glad he knows that I’m trying to provoke him.
“I mean, isn’t that right? You guys are scared of Mer-san since she’s so strong. That’s why you all came here in a group. I mean, if he’s that wary of Mer-san, that Klaus guy should’ve come alone instead.”
“Huh???”
Unable to hold back any longer, the blue dragon landed in front of us and transformed into his human form. He had blue hair and a very sharp look. He was glaring blatantly at me, but…
“To think you’d have the audacity to direct that kind of look at my Gil-kun… You sure have guts. Maybe I should erase your existence until not even a single scale is left behind before I tear Klaus apart…”
“-?!”
Mer-san said while directing her murderous intent toward him, causing him to avert his gaze in an obvious way. Just with her murderous intent alone, the blue dragon was made painfully aware of the difference in their strength.
“HAHAHAHA! You bring an army with you only to shrink away when the princess glares at you! How pathetic! Where did that bold attitude from earlier go?”
“Sh-Shut up!”
In response to Conrad-san’s amused laughter, the blue dragon man snarled back. But then…
“Wha-What…?!”
“You have no manners against your superior and on top of that… You’re lacking in strength.”
Conrad-san said as he easily pinned the blue dragon man to the ground and shook his head exasperatedly. Given that the blue dragon had come here while leading many other dragons along, he should be quite strong, but Conrad-san was able to handle him without breaking a sweat. That just showed how formidable Conrad-san was.
“Conrad-, let him go. I guess Klaus is so stressed out about me, worrying about when I will kill him, so much so that he’s sending his subordinates to soothe his anxious heart a little here.”
“Hahaha! Precisely, Your Highness!”
“Tch!”
At Mer-san’s command, Conrad-san released his hold, and the blue dragon man quickly jumped back, creating some distance between them.
“Darn it! In the end, all of you are just living on borrowed time! When the Royal Selection begins, it’s all over for you! Make sure you cherish the little time you have left!”
With that, he transformed back into a dragon and soared into the night sky, heading toward the mountains. However, in the brief moment when he shifted into his dragon form, I didn’t miss the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
