*SPOILER TITLE* The Disengage Skill "Evade" Turns Into a "Wall Clip Bug" Under Specific Conditions! When I Clipped Through the Dungeon Wall, I Was Able To Collect An Infinite Amount of First-Time Clear Rewards and So My Stats Skyrocketed! - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Wall Clip
Despite being considered a beginner’s dungeon, Fassil Dungeon’s Dungeon master, the Werewolf, is actually very strong. The general requirement for defeating it is six Level 8 adventurers.
Simply put, it’s not something a Level 1 like me could defeat.
“GUOOOOO!”
The Werewolf growled as it leapt at me.
“GYAAAA!”
I screamed as I moved my body. Surprisingly, I was able to dodge its attack.
However, the Werewolf swung its long claws through the air to follow up on my dodge, which I once again managed to desperately evade.
Calm down, me.
I could track its attacks with my eyes due to my high agility, so I should be able to continue dodging!
Wait, but I can’t even attack it!
The Werewolf continued to dish out an onslaught of attacks, which I dodged.
My defense stat was only 50, and with such paper-like defenses, even a single blow would likely end my life.
“Haaaa… haaaa… haaaa…”
My breathing had started to turn ragged since a while back. The more I dodged, the more exhausted I became. Once I ran out of stamina, it would even be impossible for me to <Evade> any attacks.
“Ugh…”
It wasn’t long before my stamina started to reach its limits. I could feel my body slowing down, and it was starting to get harder and harder to concentrate. It was an opening the Werewolf didn’t miss and it swiftly swung its claws down towards me to finish me off.
“<Evade>”
I activated my skill. For just a moment, my body sped up and moved on its own in order to dodge the incoming slash. I could tell from the Werewolf’s expression that it must have lost sight of me. It had just missed a wide attack and had subsequently exposed a large opening to me, almost as though it were begging me to attack it.
“That doesn’t even matter for someone like me!”
I plunged my knife with all my might into the Werewolf’s side, or at least I tried to. Its bristly fur blocked the blade, the only evidence of an attempted attack being a quiet thud on impact.
I think the Werewolf just laughed at me.
Higuuuuu.
Maybe it realized that I can’t do any damage to it?
After that, it was almost as though I was merely postponing an inevitable death. I ran around the small arena, dodging the Werewolf’s attacks, and in the situations where I couldn’t dodge the attacks myself, I used <Evade> to avoid them.
“Haaa… haaa… haaa… haaa…”
It felt like more than an hour had already passed since we had started fighting. My hands and feet had grown numb, and I could feel my body had been screaming at me about its limitations for some time now.
The Werewolf, on the other hand, showed no signs of slowing down despite my own exhaustion. The attacks just kept on coming and showed no signs of stopping.
The longer this fight drags on, the more I would have to use <Evade>. <Evade>’s MP cost is 5, and since my max mana is 90, I could use it a total of 18 times. However, I think I had already used it 15 times by now. I had very few uses of <Evade> left.
“Gugiyooooh!”
The Werewolf was snarling at me, spittle dripping from its disheveled maw. It really ought to clean itself.
It was almost certain that the Werewolf knew that I could only use <Evade> a set number of times. All it needs to do is hit me with another onslaught of attacks until I had used <Evade> enough times for my MP to run out.
It’s like I’m on death row.
I’m just desperately trying to stay alive despite the fact that I’m sure to die.
Oh…
This most recent time I dodged the Werewolf’s attack resulted in a very tangible change in my physical condition.
My vision became blurry. I could hear my muscles scream whenever I lifted my feet, and every time I stepped down, my bones would creak. On top of that, I was struggling to breathe.
Every time I inhaled, I fought to exhale.
I can’t die here, I have to live for my sister…
I tried to gather my thoughts and pull myself together, but my thoughts would scatter as though my brain wasn’t receiving enough oxygen.
Boom! Seeing that I was dizzy, the Werewolf took a large swing at me. It was an attack I could dodge without the use of <Evade>― or so I thought. It was a fatal mistake. I aimed to move my body, but my physical state rendered my efforts useless.
I’m sorry Eleleth, your brother is going to die here.
There was nothing I could do but make a silent apology in my heart to my sister.
There was just nothing I could do.
Clank!
There was a sudden cracking sound.
I saw the blade of my knife make contact with the Werewolf’s claws for a split second before the blade shattered into countless shards. As a result, the Werewolf’s claws failed to break skin, but the impact sent my body flying through the air.
That knife was the only keepsake I had left from my father.
What a useless thing to remember in the middle of a fight.
It was the only thing he had left after selling everything else in order to make end’s meet.
I wonder if dad was like this before he died.
Is it because I’m about to die? I noticed that a bunch of useless thoughts had been making their way to the surface since a while ago. Is this what they mean when they say you see your life flashing before your eyes?
After thoughts of dad came and went, thoughts of Eleleth came to mind.
She had always been weak and frail to the point where even after I had fed her recovery medicine multiple times, it had only temporarily boosted her health. After which she would feel worse again. It’s been so long since I last heard her voice. What did she sound like again?
“Brother Henry, live!”
What?
In that moment my mind snapped to reality. It was like my sister had called out to me, but she was currently at home and asleep. I knew right away it was an auditory hallucination, but thanks to that, I was able to regain my focus.
I wasn’t dead just yet.
My body was flying through the air, and in one tenth of a second, I would slam into the wall with such tremendous force that I’d instantly die. It hadn’t been even a second where I fell into that reverie of memories, but there really wasn’t much else I could do here.
So I did the only thing I could think of.
<Evade>.
<Evade> is a skill that allows you to avoid enemy attacks, so if you activate when you are not being attacked by an enemy, nothing happens. For example, <Evade> cancels itself if you activate it in front of a monster that won’t do anything. So I was pretty sure that it would cancel itself because I wasn’t going to be attacked by anything.
I heard a strange sound. The shock of impact did not arrive.
“What?”
My body had phased through the wall? The current predicament I was witnessing seemed to indicate that I had indeed moved through the wall. Instead of splatting onto the wall, my body phased through the wall, retained all momentum, and continued to go sailing through the air.
Normally, you’d be unable to leave the boss chamber until you defeated the boss, but here I was, supposedly on the other side of the wall.
Did I just clip through the wall?
It was the only way I could describe what had happened.
(TN: So the word ‘Clip’ comes from the id Software games where a console command ‘idclip’ allowed you to go through solid objects as though they didn’t exist, ie. walls, floors, etc. It’s a term that is woefully meta in the context of this novel, and yet it is ever fitting. However, if the readers would prefer a different word that is more context appropriate, please leave the word in the comments and I will consider it.)
