Chapter 1: Kicked Out of the Party
“Your services are no longer necessary. You’re fired.”
“……… eh?”
We had just successfully escaped from a dungeon when the party leader, Guillermo, dismissed me. I was devastated.
“Wh— why…?”
Guillermo was a huge man, easily towering over me at more than twice my height. On top of that, strapped to Guillermo’s back was an enormous axe that I was sure was bigger than me as well.
Guillermo possessed an irritable personality and often burst into a mad flurry of punches and kicks in response to anything that displeased him, so I had tried my utmost not to question or displease Guillermo in any way.
I had always done as I was commanded, never asking any questions, but this time, I refused to stay quiet. How could I when I was suddenly fired for no reason? I had to at least try and convince Guillermo to allow me to stay.
“That’s because you’re useless.”
Guillermo exclaimed with a thunderous guffaw. The other party members joined in and laughed at me. It was like torture.
I know I’m that useful. I don’t possess any decent skills and I was still only level 1, but…
“Yeah I’m weak, but I’ve been trying my best for the sake of the party!”
“Yeah, as a pack mule!”
My view distorted and my body flew backwards as Guillermo planted his fist in my face.
“Don’t give the boss lip midget!”
“Yeah idiot!”
Guillermo’s cronies mocked me amongst themselves.
“Yeah, but when I joined I said I would… that I would…”
I desperately wanted to refute him, but as I opened my mouth, my bruised face began to ache and I could feel tears well up in my eyes.
Guillermo was terrifying, so although I opened my mouth, the words faded away before I could say them.
I had joined Guillermo’s party about a year ago. At the time, nobody except Guillermo was willing to let me join their group. At the time, I bowed my head in desperation and said,
“Please let me join, I’ll do anything. I’ll even do all the menial chores.”
A year ago, I thought that all I needed to do was join a party, then everything else would fall into place. By being in a party, I’d be able to capture various opportunities to raise my level. I would level up, then I’d acquire different skills and become a full-fledged adventurer.
But even now, I’m only level one.
I could become level 2 by defeating a few goblins, but I hadn’t even managed that until now.
It was all because of my skill.
<Evade> is the only skill I have while normal people have attack skills such as <Magic> or <Sword Mastery>. In addition, my Status was too lacking. My attack value was ten. No matter how much I tried to kill certain monsters, I’d deal no damage.
But even still, hadn’t I been working hard for the party, even if it was as a porter? I suffered monster attacks countless times but I always protected the luggage and I always returned from the dungeons.
“But why now? Why are you firing me now?”
Surely this isn’t the first time the opportunity to fire me has come up? Why today of all days?
“That’s because you’ve lost your value.”
Guillermo said while pointing to my left arm.
“How are you going to carry all of our luggage properly with that injury?”
Our dungeon dive today had resulted in me injuring my left arm.
Normally I’d be okay whenever a monster would attack me, but I had been tasked with an absurd amount of luggage that I couldn’t properly carry on my own. My movements were restricted and I failed to dodge an attack.
Despite all that, I had managed to successfully escape the dungeon without dropping a single thing.
“An injury like this can be fixed with a healer or even just healing medicine―”
“Why would I do that? Why would I waste money on someone like you?”
Guillermo exclaimed.
My body tensed up in response.
“That’s why I’m letting you go today.”
Having said that, Guillermo turned his back to me and walked away as the other party members followed.
“Try not to die in the middle of nowhere.”
Someone mocked before everyone else burst into a fit of laughter.
“H-hold on, wait!”
I couldn’t let them kick me out of the party just like that. I had to earn enough money not only to just survive, but for my sister as well.
I got up and tried to chase after them, but…
“So god damn stubborn!”
I felt a foot plow into me as I felt my body get lifted into the air.
“Gah!”
My body slammed into a wall and I could no longer move.
Just like that, I was booted from the party.
