The Demon and the Healer - Chapter 24- Affair?

“Really? Never knew she would remarry for the third time.”

It was about mid-noon when Lilli and I were preparing lunch.

It has been over three months since we shifted here and I was exiled from the royal family. I never got a word from them and by now I no longer care about my family other than my younger siblings.

After that night in the woods, the relationship between me and Ray has become a little awkward. Maybe I am imagining things but he has been trying to keep himself away from me more and more.

It might be my delusion but his trips to the other side of the veil have been getting a little too often and his stay there is getting prolonged a little as well.

“Hey, hey! Watch out! ”

“Ah… “I quickly realized why Lilli panicked before I looked at my bleeding finger and healed it before it could have soiled the ingredients and brought the sliced vegetables toward the water sink to wash them up.

Lilli remained silent for a bit before she asked something with a defeated sigh, “Alright, I cannot take it anymore. What’s happening between you two recently? I no longer see Ray hanging around much and you are always dazed in his absence. Tell me the truth Char, have you guys been fighting?”

Bewildered I turned to look at my sharp friend who despite showing to be nonchalant about others’ business still tends to be quite observant.

“It’s nothing… “I didn’t want to involve her in this because of more than one reason but I underestimated how pestering this friend of mine can be at times.

She grabbed my wrist before I could have walked away and sternly asked once again, “I am not letting you go until you don’t tell me what’s going on. Heck, I will release Ellie behind you to dig out the gossip. ”

My eyes widened before I shook my head rapidly. Anything but Ellie…that little girl is seriously dangerous for someone innocent as me.

Ellie can be adorable at times but when it comes to knowing something which is kept secret from her, then she becomes a completely different person…more like a little devil.

Better off if she doesn’t get involved in this.

After some contemplation, I sighed, and leaned myself on the station before confessing the source of my concern,” I think Ray is avoiding me recently…”

“I also think so. But has something happened between you two for him to suddenly change like this?”

I thought about that night when I asked Ray about his past. Although I tried to clear up the misunderstanding it seems Ray still was quite disappointed in me, and he has all his reasons to be like that.

It must be a sensitive topic for him yet I foolishly asked for it without thinking of the consequences.

“I think I might have unintentionally hurt him.” Looking toward the entrance of the house I continued, “I never thought that my words would create such a distance between us. ”

Am I sad? Of course, I am.

Ray has become an important figure in my life whose absence bothers me a lot. When he steals his gaze away from me or when his answers do not contain the same vigor as before or when he doesn’t pay me enough attention… I feel empty.

I just…can’t understand how I am feeling right now, but this is not a good sensation.

“Hey…maybe he is having an affair?”

I sucked on a painful breath as I heard that indecent word which I cannot relate to someone so pure and loyal as Ray. I mean despite having all those beautiful women ready to throw themselves on Ray, he never accepted them back then.

“That’s simply not possible, Lilli. He never did something like that when I was not in his life, and now…please… “I smugly bit down on the chopped carrot with a proud smile not letting my lips drop.

However Lilli’s following comment made me freeze at my spot, “That’s the whole valid reason for him to give in physically with someone since despite now being in love with you, he cannot satiate his urges. When a man likes someone he wants to bed them instantly, you can take me as an example, and if they cannot then they rely on some external source.”

….she….she got a point.

When Gellion met Lilli for the first time after graduation, Lilli got pregnant in just a month’s worth of time. They married, with Ellie in her mother’s belly.

I have heard a lot about how men tend to be beasts around those whom they love and it was given that if Ray doesn’t get it from me, he would seek someone else…

The realization made my heart tremble and my eyes moistened.

I did tell him that we should not rush things between us but would he really cheat on me just because I am slightly reserved? I did give him a hug some days ago, right, then why?

I felt a warm hand over my shoulder before Lilli’s voice resounded from close.

“Look Char, I am not telling you to rush things and ruin your relationship but you have to first decide how you want to see yourself with Ray and how would you feel it someone else snatches him away from you. ”

Despite she said that I was not able to think of anything since suddenly my familiar beast appeared in front holding a message.

I frowned and channeled my mana to hear the canary’s voice only to get my eyes widened in shock.

….the Empire was under attack by a Titan.
