The Demon and the Healer - Chapter 12- Gail\'s Proposal?
[Glain’s POV:]
“Helios!”
“Sir Hero!!”
“Hero Helios!”
Along with Grace, I and many others ran in his direction as we saw the Light Hero flying across the courtroom just by a mere slap of the Demon General, whom Charlotte has been calling Ray.
Just a flick of his wrist and the Light Hero was sent flying like a broken kite, with the structure of his face disorienting. The hero who was able to withstand punches from Demon Lord and trade powerful blows for all of our astonishment, was actually slapped and readjusted by this certain existence.
True to my assumptions, this demon was anything to trifle with. I haven’t voiced my intentions regarding Ray but in my opinion, it would be best if we sort this out through words.
“Someone…heal the Hero right now!”
“What are you doing Charlotte? Come here and heal him!”
Grace shouted at the end toward our frozen comrade, who seemed too frigid as a stature upon witnessing how her ‘dear’ Ray violently acted.
Being called out by Grace Charlotte seemed to have broken out of her stupor before she began to move hurriedly in our direction. But she was not even able to make three steps across the hall before a hand enveloped her waist and the healer was pulled into an embrace by the General of Demon forces.
I don’t know when but he has created an ice throne in the middle of the venue and just like in his chamber the demon general was sitting arrogantly with Charlotte on his lap like she was his prized possession.
The sight was daring and strangely amusing in all its senses, which was not likely I would be speaking out loud and get myself a crowd’s worth of disdain.
The Demon General not only trespassed the safest location humanity possesses on this side of the veil but the way he was acting nonchalantly and getting under everyone’s nerves minus Charlotte, provides enough evidence of where we stand.
I know my advice would be regarded as a treason toward my servitude, but truth be told I suppose other than Charlotte this demon would demand nothing. But considering how mad Helios was after his first love, it could be considered a child’s wish to think Helios would give up on his crush and could-have-been-wife, readily.
“Ray…please let me go…this…this way people would hate you even more…”
Wow…was my serious reaction to what Charlotte said.
Just some time ago she was the person who most probably hated demons the most, considering what has transpired during her schooling phase and now she was getting considerate toward the same race and concerning herself for his reputation?
People change surely, but Charlotte might just have flipped turn, that stark contrast I could differentiate.
“Why do you always try to run away from me, woman? Here I healed him, so be obedient now.”
This calls for another, WOW.
This Demon General was actually fascinated by Charlotte enough to break and repair the Holy Hero of Light just on a whim.
Ray didn’t even move an inch from his spot nor did I see any kind of fluctuation of energy radiating around the Demon yet he was able to heal Helios back to full health like it was nothing to get worked up about. It nearly seemed that this inhuman carries time reversal skills or sort.
“Come buddy. Let me help you.” Everyone around me was so shocked, including the victim of the brutal assault himself that they just fell into a state of pure shock.
But I have learned my lesson and have already evaluated where this peculiar demon stands in comparison to the measurement compass we usually use to size up our foes.
Ray…far surpasses every measuring unit and to get myself out of here, I need to make my stand clear as soon as I can.
“Helios…don’t say anything brashly since we both know what that demon is capable of, right?”
As I helped my comrade to get up on his feet I silently whispered which most probably Grace also heard, but for the sake of God, her expression already told me what she had in mind.
Her following words confirmed my hunch.
“Are you telling him to compromise here, Gail? When did you become so tame?!”
Seriously, woman? I was kinda offended and highly annoyed by her loud voice which was making me the attraction of several doubtful and scorned looks.
“When you were whimpering in the demon castle to get your ass saved Grace, do you remember who pushed you to that state?” I rebuked, not ready to buy that shit, and let Helios act foolishly here since his next words might work as the catalyst toward various deaths tonight.
Grace seemingly recalled that sensation, which we both vividly remember. I ignored the nasty expression she gave me before turning my gaze toward the Hero.
“Listen, Helios. That Demon is not something we can handle as of now so it’s better we stale time and sort things out with words for now and return once we are fully prepared?”
This was the only conclusion I could land upon regarding the matter. How much this demon was showing signs of being different than his brethren, I could never forgive a single of their race and would annihilate the last of the Demons for what they have done to my friend.
But acting on impulse was never my fortè and I was thankful for it since it has saved my life numerous times. We just need to retreat for now and wait for the right moment to hit.
I have no clue whether it would work but as of now, we hold no challenge toward this calamity.
“What should I do now then? Let him take Charlotte away?!”
He’s listening. Good.
Helios was ready to understand what I have to propose is a good enough sign to ensure everyone’s safety here. I contemplated the pros and cons of what I was about to propose in front of Ray before I gave Helios a reassuring look and turned to face the ice throne.
“Mister Demon, I am Glain, by profession an Assassin.”
The demon nodded without snatching his gaze away from Charlotte with the latter fidgeting and glancing all around the place.
I was soon, the center of all the attractions, and by the looks of it, it didn’t seem the Emperor would be interrupting me either. Fortunately.
“From what I have observed, you dearly care for Charlotte, correct?”
I received several hardened looks from the audience, most precisely from the high nobilities including the Emperor and those who were trying to woo Charlotte.
I could understand the Emperor since he dotes a lot for his children but the others…? Do they really think they have any chance now?
Holding my urge to roll my eyes, I saw the demon turning his head in my direction, seemingly intrigued that finally, someone was not telling him to burn away.
“I do.”
The answer was what I predicted and mostly everyone by now knows in this courtroom.
I stepped forward cautiously with an unbreaking smile before forwarding my query.
“Then does her acceptance of this relationship matter to you?”
My words earned me some murmurs of astonishment and a doubtful look from Charlotte. But currently, my undivided attention was forwarded to the Demon.
There was a slight frown that came and went by in an instant but remained enough to get noticed. Thankfully, I am receiving the reaction I anticipated.
“Of course it does.”
Perfect.
I hardly was able to hold my grin before I once again stepped forward and asked in an innocent tone.
“Then are you sure, Charlotte is equally interested in you to leave her family and friend to be with Mister Demon?”
My eyes turned toward Charlotte when I finished my words, who had her narrowed gaze darting in my direction.
The demon also turned his head toward the girl making her snatch her eyes away from me and look away.
For the good grace of the lord, Charlotte was not entirely smitten by this demon and has yet to develop feelings toward Ray. She stood on my expectation and by the frown marring on the demon’s face, it seemed he also realized that Charlotte was not willing to sacrifice everything and accept Ray’s love.
I have done my job at this point. Now it was up to the Demon General to act. Depending on his action it would be proved whether he is different from others.
Regardless, my hatred would not get affected by whatever route he chooses.
Ray remained silent, seemingly pondering. Charlotte’s hand on Ray’s shirt tightened, probably nervous. And here I had a full blooming smile across my face, elated by my performance.
“You got a point, Assassin Gail.”
The demon acknowledged my reasoning before I bowed and backed off, as I saw Ray also getting up from his throne carrying Charlotte in his arm for a moment before he placed her safely on the ground.
Charlotte had yet to release her grip from his shirt and inexplicable emotions moistened her eyes. She sure knows how to melt a man’s heart and equally how to break it.
Condolence, my friend Helios.
The Demon turned to look at the Emperor before he spoke out his parting words toward the audience, of this evening.
“Thirty days. If I don’t make her fall in love I wouldn’t appear anywhere near your daughter or your territory. But don’t try to lock her up in the meantime or things might not end as peacefully as they went today.”
Ray turned to say something to Charlotte which my enhanced senses also failed to catch before her grip on his shirt loosened up and in a cloud of black smog, the uninvited guest disappeared.
