“Being called to the rooftop makes me feel like I’m going to receive a confession. I’m a bit nervous.”

“You mustn’t joke about other people’s names, Michihito-kun. Sure, you can joke about your own name, but not with other people’s names.”

Unable to hide my irritation, my tone came out a bit harsher than I intended. Michihito Naruse… His red hair had grown out in a messy way. His uniform’s tie was loosened in a sloppy way too. He didn’t have many friends in class and always seemed alone. Upon closer inspection, I had to admit he had fair skin and he looked pretty handsome, but his overall vibe was… Disappointing to say the least. He gave me the vibe of a ‘failed yankee.’

“More important, Sarashina, are you dating Makabe?”

“Huh? Me and Makabe-kun? Why?”

“No, I mean, it’s just…”

“Ah, don’t tell me…!”

I grinned mischievously, giving off the ‘Ah, I see~’ impression as I leaned in to peer at his face. 

“You must be feeling jealous seeing how close I was with Makabe-kun. Heh. You’re kind of cute.”

“No, it’s not like that.”

He immediately denied, shrugging off my attitude. 

“Then…Why?”

“Yesterday… It seemed Makabe was confessing to you yesterday.”

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“No, I mean, you know… Yesterday, you two were holding hands in the classroom.”

Ah, so that’s what he’s talking about… He must’ve misunderstood. He thought Makabe-kun was confessing to me yesterday. In that case, I can see why he asked that question earlier. But still, there’s something off about his reaction. It’s like my ability is not working on him…

I remembered I had ordered him to forget everything that happened yesterday. Maybe he had a resistance to my ability? So my ability was having a harder time to take effect on him? Anyway, not dealing with this problem now would cause more issues in the future. I guess I had to make him like me a little bit more. That said, I couldn’t touch him for too long or he would be a pain to deal with in the future. I had to be careful with how long I touched him. 

Now that I had decided what to do, I quickly moved into action…

“Now, now. Don’t get so angry, Michihito-kun. I was just teasing you a bit. Here, let’s shake hands as a sign of reconciliation.”

I said while giving him a shy smile and stepped closer to him. Then, I extended my right hand. 

“W-What? A handshake?”

He looked surprised for a moment, but when I tilted my head to the side and gave him a big, bright smile, it seemed he finally caved in. He scratched his head awkwardly, seemingly trying to hide his embarrassment. But then, almost as if he was pulled by some mysterious force, he tightly grasped my extended hand.

Heh. Boys are really simple, aren’t they? Just give them a cute little smile and they will give me a handshake so easily like this. He doesn’t seem to have a high resistance to girls either. He’s as strong as a slime at most. A weak monster like him… I guess I just need to hold his hand for a few seconds.

But the relentless wind seemed determined to keep flapping my skirt as much as it could. When the gust finally died down, I looked up to see Naruse Michihito standing there, his face bright red as he pretended to whistle. Yes. Pretended. Because no sound was coming out of his mouth. 

“Did you see it?”

“Umm… See what?”

“If you answer honestly, I might spare your life now.”

I glared at him sharply, my eyes narrowing into a piercing glare.

“I-I didn’t see anything!”

“Liar! Forget what you saw this instant!”

“That’s impossible! Nobody can just do that!”

“Huh? If you like me, you should be able to, right?”

“But I don’t like you in that way, Sarashina!

“Huh!”

Oh no, I let out a weird sound on accident.

But, wait. He doesn’t like me? Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Isn’t he supposed to say “I like you” or “I love you” with zeal??? Why? How?? I definitely held his hand, didn’t I? And not just once—twice if I count yesterday’s! Could it be… Is my ability not working on him? No, no, no, that’s impossible. My ability is absolute. There’s no guy in this world who won’t fall for me. There must be some kind of mistake.

“If you tell me you like me right now, I will forgive you, you know?”

“I told you already. I don’t like you. I mean, just how full of yourself can you be?”

I was at a loss for words for a moment. I probably had the dumbest look on my face this entire year.

That humiliating phrase… This was the first time in my life anyone ever said that to me. I knew for certain now. My ability didn’t have any effect on him. Judging from our situation… I see. The contact time must had been too short. I totally underestimated him, thinking he was as strong as a slime at most. Michihito-kun…

“You’re seriously overreacting just because I might’ve seen your underwear for a split second!”

In an instant, I could feel  my face flushing in bright red.

But then, the bell signaling the start of the next period drowned my voice out.

With that, he made a quick escape, leaving me standing there, fuming. He had taken advantage during the brief moment when I was distracted by the ball. He quickly bolted down from the rooftop at full speed.
