“Ahh! There’s a cat! It’s so cute!”
I had just arrived at a place called “Cat Alley” with Kisara and true to its name, there were cats everywhere.
What is this…Are we in a Ghibli movie or something?
“You hate dogs, but you like cats, huh?”
“Huh? Don’t compare cats to wild beasts like them. Look, the cat’s saying, ‘Don’t lump me in with them!’ while I cuddle it.”
Kisara was cuddling a cat that had come close to her. She was poking its paws playfully. The cat looked a bit annoyed at Kisara, but I decided to keep that thought to myself. As we continued walking toward the ropeway, all we could see was cats, cats, and more cats. In the shops, there were cat-themed goods, and on the sidewalks, there were cat statues. Kisara seemed to be making friends with every cat she saw.
“Come now~ There~ There~”
“You’ve made more cat friends than human friends.”
“Cats are all the friends I need!”
“Yeah. You actually fit just right with them.”
“Huh? Do I seem cat-like?”
I had said it sarcastically, but Kisara smiled happily for some reason. It seemed being called ‘cat-like’ was considered as a compliment to her.
“The cat’s saying, ‘Today’s underwear is light blue, nya~.'”
At that, Kisara suddenly flinched and pressed her skirt down.
“You pervert! You never learn your lesson, do you?!”
“No! The cat’s the one saying that! Not me!”
“As if cats can talk!”
“Like you are one to talk when you only have cats as your friends!”
After a bit of casual back-and-forth, we finally passed through “Cat Alley,” and next, we were on our way to the observatory park by ropeway. The ropeway ride was surprisingly quick, considering the price we paid, but Kisara seemed as energetic as ever. She seemed to really enjoy the passing scenery, so, I figured it was fine. The ride was worth the money if I could see her looking this happy.
“Wow, there’s a cat even next to the observatory!”
“Another cat… Alright, enough with the cats. Let’s just go up to the observatory and enjoy the view.”
“Hmm… Do you think it’s okay if we take this cat up to the observatory?”
“Of course not. Come on, we need to hurry before it gets dark.”
“Okay~”
Though she puffed out her cheeks in a pout, Kisara still seemed happy and snuggled up to me. I led her toward the observatory, which had a round, oddly shaped structure. The observatory was two stories high, with the first floor being a glass-walled viewing area and the second floor was the actual rooftop observatory.
We skipped the first floor and headed straight to the second floor. We walked up the dim stairs with light shone through from above and when we finally stepped outside… A 360-degree panoramic view unfolded before us.
“Wow, this is amazing!”
Kisara exclaimed in excitement. What entered our view was the stunning contrast of the majestic nature and the old, charming townscape. Amidst the lush green mountains stood buildings that looked like they came out of a history book. The inner sea shimmered like precious diamonds, and the surface of the water, bathed in the setting sun, resembled a red carpet weaving through the mountains.
“I can smell the sea.”
Kisara said as she took a deep breath, filling her chest with the scent of the sea. She was savoring the aroma of nature to her heart’s content. I shifted my gaze away from Kisara’s chest, which was puffed up from her taking a deep breath and tried to follow her example. I inhaled the air deeply myself. The scent of the sea carried by the wind was something that felt particularly nostalgically comforting to us since we grew up in coastal areas. The nostalgic air seemed to return us to the simplicity and joy of childhood, something we had forgotten as we grew older. Maybe this was why Kisara looked more excited than usual. Maybe she was feeling something similar to me.
“Michihito-kun! I can see something like a castle!”
“That’s the ‘Shimanami Kaido’ over there.”
“Where? Where? I can’t see it because of my height.”
And at that moment… Maybe because I was feeling a bit sentimental… By the time I realized it, I already had my arms around Kisara’s waist and lifted her up. This was something I wouldn’t do under normal circumstances and startled by my sudden action, Kisara kicked her legs in confusion.
“Eh…? Eh…?”
She started mumbling. Yeah. This was definitely the so-called ‘princess carry.’
“Hey, Michihito-kun! Stop! Put me down!”
“You wanted to be treated like a princess today, right, Your Highness?”
“Ugh… That’s true, but! This is too embarrassing!”
“Come on. Look over there. You can see the Shimanami Kaido now, right?”
Finally resigned to her fate, Kisara wrapped her arms around my neck and turned her eyes toward the sea.
“Hey… Michihito-kun.”
“Yeah?”
“When you carry me in a princess carry like this… I think my field of vision is getting lower instead. I can see higher when I stand up like normal.”
“Huh?”
“Pfft… HAHAHAHAHA!!”
I must’ve looked like a fool. As soon as Kisara saw my face, she burst into laughter, and I couldn’t help but join her, laughing at how absurd and funny it was. After a good laugh, Kisara quietly spoke.
“I couldn’t see the Shimanami Kaido, but I’m really glad we came today.”
Kisara said, looking genuinely happy.
“Aaaah~ I hope we can come here again someday.”
I said without giving it much thought and Kisara looked at me in surprise. However, maybe because I just continued gazing at the amazing scenery, Kisara also turned her eyes back to the scenery. Then, she smiled gently before nodding along.
“Yeah.”
A simple word and yet, that simple word carried a very deep emotion within it.
Also, this was something I would never say out loud, but… Kisara actually looked really adorable when she smiled so innocently like that. It was as if she had returned to the simplicity of her childhood heart.
