ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After school, I went straight home. Lately, Hasumi had been inviting me out almost every day, but maybe she held back today after seeing how my big sister was acting this morning. Since she didn’t invite me, I was able to head straight home.
That said, it had been about seven or eight hours since my big sister got into a bad mood. She should be over it by now.
“I’m home.”
I stepped into the entryway and said my greeting as usual. Normally, I would see my sister running up to me with a cheerful “Welcome back~!”—but today, that didn’t happen.
“Huh…? Nee-san?”
I called out, but there was no response.
…Maybe she hasn’t come home yet.
I did come home earlier than usual, and it was highly possible she had been going out shopping around this time lately without me knowing.
“—Or so I thought, but her shoes are here.”
Wondering what was going on, I took off my shoes and stepped into the living room. There, I saw my sister sitting on the sofa with her back to me.
“So you were already home, Nee-san. I thought you went out shopping or something… What are you doing sitting there?”
I asked, but she didn’t answer my question. Instead, she brought up something totally unrelated to my question.
“You’re home early today. Didn’t go hang out with your female friend again?”
So she’s still holding a grudge.
I thought it was just a passing mood earlier, but apparently not.
“I don’t know why you’re so upset about it, but can we not talk with your back to me? Let’s face each other and talk properly.”
When I said that, she hesitated for a moment, but then slowly turned to face me.
“I’m not mad, okay?”
“It’s totally unconvincing to hear you say that with your cheeks puffed up like that.”
“—But, but! I really want to spend more time with you after school, and I thought, well, maybe it’s important too if you want to hang out with friends, so I tried to accept it, but then, you kept it from me that your friend was a girl! Of course I’d get mad! I’m mad, super mad!”
“I just don’t get it… Why is it a problem if my friend is a girl?”
“That’s not the only problem! You don’t get anything! You don’t understand anything! I wish I’d never been born as your older sister!”
The moment I heard those words, something inside me cracked. We’d argued before, sure—but she’d never said anything like that.
“Don’t say that, Nee-san… I’m glad you’re my big sister. I don’t know why you’re so mad you’d say something like that, but… I don’t want to lose the most important bond we have over a silly argument.”
I said it sincerely, from the bottom of my heart. Hearing that, she opened her eyes wide and replied in a flustered voice.
“Th-that’s not it! I didn’t say that because I hate you, I swear! It’s the opposite—because I love you so much, I ended up saying something awful like that… I-I’m sorry! That was totally my fault! I’m happy you’re my little brother too!”
“Nee-san… I’m glad to hear that.”
I’d been worried I might’ve done something to make her hate me so much that even she, usually so kind, would say something like that. But hearing her words and feeling her emotion now, I could tell just how much she loved me.
Then, with a gentle expression, she continued.
“There’s no way I could ever hate you. I’ll always love you, Tsumugu… I promise.”
“Nee-san… Thank you.”
Feeling her kindness and love, I thought the conversation had finally reached a peaceful end—but then she puffed her cheeks again and said.
“But you know, I think you could’ve at least told me that you made a female friend, don’t you? It’s not even something you need to hide, but the fact that you didn’t say anything was the real surprise.”
“That’s… Sorry. It’s not something I was trying to hide, so I figured it wasn’t something I needed to mention either. That’s why I didn’t bring it up.”
“…You don’t have a girlfriend, right?”
“N-no, I don’t. Definitely not.”
I shook my head firmly in denial. Seeing that, Nee-san stopped puffing her cheeks and smiled.
“I see… In that case, I’ll go make dinner!”
“Thanks, Nee-san.”
“Yup! …Oh yeah, next time, make sure to properly introduce your friend, okay? Hasumi… Sumire-chan, right?”
Even though she had looked angry after I told her about Hasumi, she still remembered the name properly.
“Yeah, I’ll introduce her next time.”
“Thanks!”
With a bright smile, Nee-san walked off toward the kitchen. A lot happened, but I was really glad I made up with Nee-san. And so, our rare sibling quarrel came to a peaceful end.
