Chapter 38: VenusVenus
Mid-June, a muggy Saturday night before the rainy season.
The live house “Dolphin” in Yokohama was already packed with a large audience.
Tonight, a joint live event featuring girls’ bands was being held here.
A popular event centered on up-and-coming acts, four bands were set to perform.
Miku and Kotoha’s band, VenusVenus, was scheduled to take the stage second.
Seven members of the share house, coerced into buying tickets by the two, came to see VenusVenus’s live performance for the first time.
“So many people.
I didn’t expect such a big event.”
Asuna, positioned near the front of the floor, was amazed.
“It’s my first time at a live house, but the energy’s incredible.”
Yuuki, beside her, looked around the venue.
“We’ve gotta cheer them on as share house mates!”
Akane was fired up, ready to support from the front row.
“I’m excited to see what kind of performance Miku-san and Kotoha-san will give.”
Sakura’s eyes sparkled as she stared at the stage.
“Kotoha’s amazing at karaoke, so I bet her stage performance will be great.”
Riona grinned.
At that moment, the floor lights dimmed, and the first band’s performance began amid cheers.
※
The final song of the first band echoed through the floor.
In the stage wings, the VenusVenus members, waiting for their turn, were wrapped in tension.
“The place is packed…”
Miku gripped her drumsticks, trembling slightly.
“Miku, you’re scared of this crowd? Pull it together.”
The leader, Shiori, slapped Miku’s back.
Kotoha checked her tuning, while Natsuki leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths.
“Kotoha, Natsuki… have confidence!
Today, we’ll pour all our practice into this!”
Shiori’s words shifted the members’ expressions.
The first band’s performance ended, and a hectic set change began.
When the VenusVenus flag was raised at the back of the stage, the floor’s anticipation surged.
The floor lights dimmed again, and the opening sound effect played.
Amid cheers from the audience, the four VenusVenus members took their positions.
All wore black T-shirts with the band’s logo.
To the left, facing the stage, was the leader and keyboardist, Shiori Fujimiya (20 years old).
On the right, the bassist, Natsuki Aikawa (20 years old).
At the back center, Miku Yuuki (19 years old) sat at the drum set.
Her face was tense, but spotting Yuuki, Asuna, and the others in the crowd softened her expression.
At the center mic, vocalist and guitarist Kotoha Kishitani (19 years old) stood with her guitar.
Catching sight of her share house mates, she exhaled softly.
(…Everyone from the share house came.)
With Kotoha’s short shout, Miku struck a powerful count.
The first song was Midsummer Weather.
A fast-paced guitar riff layered with Kotoha’s cool, soaring vocals.
Known for their individual charisma and beauty, VenusVenus, though only a year old, steadily gained fans with each live show.
Kotoha, with her charismatic presence and exceptional vocals, and Miku, with her snow-white ash twin-tails and intense beats, were especially popular.
The second song was their signature, Sweet Paradise.
Thanks to their practice, the band’s cohesion had improved significantly.
Yuuki was captivated by Miku, her trademark twin-tails thrashing as she pounded the beat.
(I’ve never seen Miku like this…)
Riona and Akane raised their fists, swinging them to the rhythm in support.
When the song ended, the entire floor erupted in loud applause, a strong start.
“Good evening, I’m Kotoha from VenusVenus.
Thank you all so much for coming tonight.
Enjoy our performance until the end!”
Kotoha addressed the crowd with a smile.
Seeing her dazzling smile, unlike anything at the share house, Yuuki found her incredibly captivating.
“Next is our new song, Highway Lovers. Please listen.”
Miku’s double bass roared, launching a high-energy rock number.
Reina and Riona were wide-eyed at Miku’s fierce yet precise drumming.
The fourth song was VenusVenus’s new theme, Wings of the Goddess.
Miku set a powerful mid-tempo beat.
Kotoha’s commanding vocals filled the venue, Natsuki’s groovy bassline anchored the song, and Shiori’s grand keyboard spread the sound like wings.
The final number was a new song, Mermaid Syndrome.
A bright, upbeat rock tune.
The members occasionally made eye contact, playing with smiles.
Miku even twirled her sticks playfully at times.
As the performance ended, the floor’s energy hit its peak.
Miku stood, sweat-soaked, raising her sticks high.
“Thank you! This was VenusVenus!”
The members lined up, held hands, and bowed deeply.
Amid unrelenting applause, they left the stage.
※
An hour and a half later, all performances ended, and the floor lights came on.
As the audience headed for the exit, Yuuki and the others rushed to Miku and Kotoha.
“Miku-chan, Kotoha-chan! You were so cool!”
Asuna was the first to shower them with praise.
“Miku-san, you were sparkling!
Your drumming was awesome!”
Sakura said excitedly.
“Thanks for coming, everyone!”
Miku, still buzzing, beamed with a wide smile.
“Kotoha, your guitar and vocals were amazing!”
Akane slapped Kotoha’s shoulder.
Kotoha thanked her shyly.
“…Thanks, Akane-san.”
“You two were like different people on stage. You were shining.”
Mizuki showed them live photos on her phone, giving a thumbs-up.
“Great job. It was an amazing show.”
Yuuki’s words made the two nod happily.
Then, Shiori and Natsuki returned.
“Thank you all for coming today.”
Shiori greeted the share house group with a smile.
“Miku, Kotoha, we’ve got gear cleanup and a meeting.”
Shiori said before heading to the dressing room.
“Yes, we’ll be right there!”
Miku replied hurriedly.
“Hey, Miku-chan, Kotoha-chan, are you hungry?
We’ve got a reservation at Hyakka Ryoran afterward. Wanna join us later?”
Asuna asked the two.
“Huh, really?”
“We’re in!”
Miku and Kotoha answered instantly.
“How long till you can come?”
Asuna checked.
“Probably about an hour, I think.”
“Got it… We’ll be waiting.”
Still basking in the excitement, the share house residents left the live house.
The seven returned to Hakurindai Station by train and headed straight to the izakaya Hyakka Ryoran.
