Chapter 8: A Letter From His Majesty

A few days after hearing the shocking background story, I continued living my life just like usual. 

I could hear a voice on the back of my head. 

“No, don’t you think you need to investigate more about this?”

But I proudly ignored the voices and retorted back,”No, thank you! I shall ignore that troublesome part magnificently!”

I mean, I’m still 3 years old, you know? It’d be too weird if I did things beyond my age, you know? I don’t want to be branded as a weird boy, you know? I know, my mental age is that of a high school boy… Oh, wait. Isn’t this… Like that anime? That famous detective anime? The one with a kid that thinks like an adult? The one that can see through the truth despite having the appearance of a child! Except the boy detective is not a reincarnator like e…

Well, joking aside, I’ve actually noticed something. No, please don’t say ‘Now??’. Anyway, allow me to tell you my story about when I went to the library in this mansion the other day.

Right! In a mansion belonging to a noble, of course there’s a library, right? Being able to freely wander around the mansion means I can explore all I want and so.. I discovered it! A library! It seems this room was used by my mother’s father when he was alive…. 

Anyway, at first I hoped there might be books about magic like in the anime or something… However, there isn’t any book about magic whatsoever (T_T)… I ‘ve gotten my hopes up since I was reincarnated into another world, but unfortunately, this world isn’t a world of magic. 

In any case, upon looking through the books in the library, I realized I can read them just fine even though I’ve never seen these characters before. This is definitely ‘that’, right? The cheat-like perk from being reincarnated. That’s right! I realized I’m blessed with a cheat-like ability!

Huh? Not a big deal you say? 

Like I said, please refrain from being too mean to me. No! Please refrain from saying ‘you just realized it this late in the game?’ too! Anyway, thanks to this perk, I learned that the ecosystem of animals in this world isn’t all that different from my previous world. However, they still have mammoths and other extinct animals. That being said, we don’t have mammoth and stuff in this region though.

I guess that’s about all. That’s the only new finding I’ve found recently. I will report back if I learn anything else. 

Who am I even talking to? Oh~ Come on~

With that, my consciousness was brought back to reality from the depth of internal monologue. 

Clank, clank, clank, clank!

I could hear clanking noises coming from the outside. Curious, I peeked out from the second-floor window to see people donned in full armor surrounding the mansion. These people came fully armed, complete with weapons like spears, axes and swords at their waist. 

“…This is bad… But why…”

Could it be… These people are after me?!

I quickly headed to my mother.

However, my fear was unfounded. All the people wearing armor were, of course, women. In fact, they were knights dispatched by the kingdom… Ugh. How embarrassing… Why would I believe they were here for me? I felt like I was infected with chuunibyou syndrome. Fortunately, I never said anything out loud. I hoped no one found out about these embarrassing thoughts of mine…

“May we place it here?”

“Yes. Please just place it over there.”

The female knights were carrying a bunch of large wooden crates into the house. Miinya meticulously directed them where to place the boxes. I heard that these crates were filled with money, food and all other stuff. Apparently these were the reward given by the kingdom for bearing a boy.

While Miinya was organizing the boxes together with the female knights, my mother and I went to have a talk with the captain of the knights. 

“First of all, congratulations on the birth of your son, Maria-sama!”

“Thank you, Erin. Please, since it’s just us here, it’s okay if you drop the formalities.”

“….I’m afraid that’s not possible…”

It seemed my mother and Captain Erin knew each other beforehand.

“So, is this your son?”

“Yes, he’s my son, El.”

“Nice to meet you, Captain Erin.”

“Oh! Please, no need for honorifics! Just call me Erin.”

Calling her with her name only felt a bit too daring though…

“Umm… Then, Erin-san?”

“There’s no need for ‘-san’ either.”

“And so? Are you here just to deliver us the rewards, Erin?”

“Actually, I’m also here to deliver this.”

The captain handed my mother an expensive-looking envelope. The envelope was sealed with wax. The wax was engraved with a family crest, something that usually belonged to a noble family or the royal family. My mother then cut open the seal and started reading the letter right away. 

“…I see.”

“May I ask what the letter says, Mother?”

“Oh El, you can just call me like usual. Well, this letter is talking about you.”

“Me?”

“His Majesty… The king of this kingdom had his first child three years ago.”

“Three years ago…”

So the child was the same age as me.

“It’s a girl though….”

A girl… So a princess then. I wondered what kind of princess she was. 

“…Anyway, to put it simply, there will be a birthday party to introduce her to the public. In this letter, the king requested your attendance.”

I see… A party to celebrate her birthday. Naturally, a lot of people would be there. 

“Please leave the security for your journey to the castle to us.”

Apparently, we would be heading to the royal castle soon. I looked forward to meeting a real princess, but at the same time, I hoped I could also meet another man if possible. 

Then, three days later, we started embarking to the royal castle.
