Chapter 16: Side Story: Leila’s Side

My family was called the vampires by the people. They also sometimes called our bloodline was cursed. Of course, there was a reason behind our notorious reputation. It was said that my ancestors used to bathe in human blood. However, they didn’t obtain this blood by killing people. Apparently, they paid the villagers for their blood and this blood was used to maintain my ancestor’s beauty. Of course, I didn’t know if this story had any inkling of truth behind it or not, but personally speaking, I had no desire to use human blood to maintain my beauty or whatsoever. 

The kingdom I used to live in was located in the east. You’d need to cross the sea to the north of Altair’s territory to get there. My ancestors held the title of marquis for generations. We used to live a happy life. We were still called the vampires even in my generations because we still kept buying blood from the villagers. Of course, there was a reason for this too. We bought blood to help those who couldn’t pay the taxes. Furthermore, our country had strict tax collection policies. Naturally, there were a lot of people who couldn’t pay the taxes. While the villagers were in turmoil, they remembered a legend that had been passed down through generations. 

“When in trouble, offer blood to the marquis family with red eyes!”

So they said.

Although I didn’t really understand why the situation became like this, but we, the Red Eye family, always lent a hand when our people were in trouble. However, that didn’t mean we could keep buying large quantities of blood that we didn’t have any use of. The villagers would then prick their fingers with a needle and let the blood drip onto a white plate. At first, I was confused. They should’ve helped the villagers for free then, but my family said there were various reasons for this, compensation was needed or something… No one told me anything in detail, so I didn’t really understand.

And of course, there were some high-ranking families that didn’t like us. Our Red Eye Marquis family eventually vanished from history because the people from the ducal and other marquis families hated us. The previous king was assassinated and a new king ascended to the throne. This marked the beginning of our downfall. The other noble family used our blood-buying practices to accuse us of deceiving and killing our subjects. They said we were draining their blood, sucking the people’s blood for nefarious purposes and other various crimes. Of course, our people protested, they tried to defend us and insisted those claims were false. However, the voice of the commoners didn’t hold a candle to the voice of the nobles. Somehow, my mother and I were able to escape the execution, but we were sold to slavery. The slave traders separated us, depriving me of my mother.

I was passed around from one slave trader to another. The slave traders hated me for being a child. They said I was a powerless goods that was creating a hole in their food budget. 

However, I… I just wanted to meet my mother again… Memories of my mother overflowed in me like a broken dam.

Then, in the midst of all that, I ended up being taken by a slave trader that hailed from another kingdom. Her name was Wuxian. She was kinder than other slave traders. She made sure I had proper meals, although she had a nasty tongue…

However, I could feel the distance between me and my mother growing bigger and bigger.. Would I ever see my mother again? I could feel this longing draining the life out of me.

Then, when Wuxian and I were stopping by a certain village, a child younger than me said she wanted to buy me. Maybe this child wanted to have a playmate? 

The child was making some kind of deal with Wuxian. For a moment, she seemed to look older than me.

After a while, it seemed they reached an agreement. I ended up being taken in by that child. However, at the time, I didn’t expect that this child was actually a boy…

El’s mother. She has long aqua-green hair and doted on her son. There was a secret behind her pregnancy…

Miinya (18)

A maid serving the Altair family and she was also Maria’s best friend. She was the head maid. She was also highly dependable as a guard for El.

Letty (14)

A maid serving the Altair Family. Not very talkative. 

Rinrin (15)

A maid serving the Altair family. She always tied her hair into two buns and ended her sentences with ‘aru’. 

Rainrose XIII (73)

The king of the kingdom that El resided. He had spent most of his lifetime trying to conceive to no avail, however miracles happened. The miracles brought other miracles and he was granted a daughter named Tia. This made him become a doting parent. 

Prime Minister Clara (68)

The prime minister of Rainrose Kingdom. She and the king were known as a great duo. 

Erin (16)

The knight commander of the Royal Knights of Rainrose Kingdom. She was appointed as a guard for the Altair family by the kingdom. She had a senior-junior relationship with Maria and Miinya. 

Tia Rainrose (3)

The princess of Rainrose Kingdom.She has crimson red hair. She helped El in searching for the mother of a lost girl that they happened to meet in the castle town. It seemed that was the moment that triggered her to develop feelings for El. 

Mimi (3)

A lost girl that El and Tia helped. She was able to reunite with her mother. 

Teresa de Deneb (18)

Maria’s best friend and also a Duchess. She has long black hair and she was also Lance’s mother. 

Lance de Deneb (3)

Teresa’s son. A handsome young man with black hair. He became friends with El on the day they first met. He had a bit of a crush on Tia. 

Mayor Seleen (77)

The mayor and feudal lord of a village called Seleen. An elderly man who told many stories to El. 

Wuxian (38)

A slave trader from Kanrinsen. Something in El drew her in and she entrusted El with the ownership of Leila, a slave. She and El would form a mutual relationship where they’d help each other out. 

Leila (6)

The daughter of a former marquis from a distant continent. People said her family was cursed. She has white hair and came from a family that was known for being vampires. She met El after falling into slavery.
