Chapter 126: True Companions
“Garula! Why are you here?”
“Hey, hey, Kanata. That’s a silly question.”
“Is that so?”
“That’s right. By the way, the boss isn’t here.”
“…Phew.”
“Don’t be so relieved. She was quite eager to come.”
As Kanata and Garula’s conversation unfolded, Cid could only tilt his head in confusion.
Well, for Kanata, encountering Garula in the Empire’s territory was unexpected, but he quickly understood the purpose from the flow of their conversation.
Kanata then turns to introduce Garula to Cid.
“Um… this guy is Garula, someone I know. He might look intimidating, but he’s actually a great guy.”
“Intimidating is unnecessary… Cough, I’m Garula. I met Kanata by chance.”
“Oh, I see… I’m Cid. Nice to meet you, Garula… san.”
“Just Garula is fine.”
Garula casually extends his hand, and Cid, albeit nervously, shakes it.
Only Kanata knows Garula’s true identity here, but it’s easy to imagine the commotion it would cause if Cid found out, so for now, Garula’s demonic nature is kept a secret.
Garula, sensing this, keeps his demon identity hidden.
“So, did you really come just to see the Haishin event?”
“There’s that, but I also wanted to see the Empire again. With the boss not around, Lucia isn’t here either… By the way, she seemed really eager to come too.”
“Heh.”
Garula aside, if there had been a succubus with the power to irresistibly attract men, it might have been a disaster in its own right.
Yet, the truth is, wanting to meet someone precisely because they are an acquaintance is a genuine feeling, and while it’s a bit disappointing, Kanata accepts it as it is.
“What are you guys doing here?”
“We’re just taking a night stroll, kind of like sightseeing.”
“Hmm? You specifically came to the pleasure district? Looking for a nice lady to have a wild time with, aren’t you?”
“Don’t say it so bluntly…” Kanata thinks to himself with a sigh.
However, Cid, seemingly less resistant to such teasing, turns bright red in denial and ends up being the subject of Garula’s amusement.
For Cid, it’s a somewhat pitiful scene, but for Kanata, the noisy interaction between the two is somewhat enjoyable.
(Humans and demons… even hiding their true identities, it’s still possible for everyone to get along… If only it were easier to say that racial barriers are trivial.)
Prejudice against demons has significantly lessened since Kanata live-streamed from the Demon Kingdom… but still, undeniable barriers remain.
If acting as Haishin can help break down these barriers, even a little, then Kanata believes that would be a wonderful thing… and that’s what makes it fulfilling.
“Really… All of Kanata’s acquaintances are incredible in their own way.”
“Ahaha… But I’m glad we could get along.”
“I’m honestly surprised. We got along so quickly, almost like he’s a big brother figure.”
“Big brother figure, huh… I often hear that, but it’s not really my style.”
Upon being referred to as a big brother figure, Garula didn’t seem to fully grasp the concept.
Later, expressing a desire to explore various nightspots, Garula left, and Kanata resumed walking with Cid.
Despite being a pleasure district, the area showcased many aspects of the Empire’s technological advancements, each sight eliciting cheers from Cid and a smile from Kanata.
(Haha. It reminds me of freely roaming the city with friends in my past life.)
Kanata cherished these moments that evoked memories of a past life he could never return to, even though he couldn’t recall it completely.
Thus, Kanata and Cid enjoyed their night in the city.
Around the time Kanata stopped paying attention to Mira’s occasional appearances, an intriguing scene unfolded in front of a certain building.
“Believe me, you are one of us, our real companion.”
Hearing this, Kanata turned his attention to the source.
The building was a guild where adventurers from the imperial city gathered, bustling with activity that rivaled the nightlife of the pleasure district, despite it being late.
Inside, there were heartwarming discussions about the Haishin event, but what caught Kanata’s interest was the group from whom the earlier statement had come.
“But… I really can’t do anything, and I just end up being a burden to you guys…”
“Don’t worry about that. How many times do I have to say it? We are the best adventuring party, true companions, aren’t we?”
This was a group of five: two men and three women. From their conversation, it was clear they were a party, their words brimming with intense friendship.
Surrounded by women, the man who appeared to be the leader faced a visibly timid boy, with Cid beside him muttering about the vibrancy of youth. However, Kanata couldn’t help but feel that something was amiss.
“Kanata? What’s wrong?”
“Cid.”
Kanata, staring intently at the party, continued.
“True companions… sure, it sounds nice, but don’t you think it’s a cliché phrase with potential ulterior motives?”
“That might be overthinking it… But coming from you, Kanata, it does sound convincing.”
“Let me tell you a story.”
With that, Kanata began to narrate, drawing from his memories of a past life and adding his own twist. The story involved a protagonist in a party who gets deceived by a so-called leader, akin to a popular cautionary tale from Kanata’s original world.
“And that’s why I’m skeptical.”
“Man, after hearing that, how could I think any differently! I even noticed that leader-like guy smirking!”
It seems Cid picked up on something from Kanata’s story.
“Worried, huh? So, what do you want to do about it?”
“Should we follow them?”
“If that’s what you want, Cid… Mira.”
“Yes!”
“!?!?!?”
And so, Kanata and the group set off to uncover the truth.
They were determined to find out whether the ‘true companions’ the party spoke of were genuine or just a facade.
