Chapter 111: When Haishin Moves, Many Things Move
“… Old man?”
“Hm? Oh, it’s you, Kanata.”
It had been a while since the classes ended, and Kanata was out getting some food.
The stall he visited was one he always frequented whenever he went into town. However, something seemed off about the usual shopkeeper.
He looked somewhat dispirited or, perhaps, just unenergetic. In any case, something felt amiss.
“What’s going on? You don’t seem your usual self.”
“Ah… Actually, I’ve been thinking of closing down the shop soon.”
“… What?”
Kanata found the news unsettling. After probing further, it turned out to be a familiar story. Sales were low, and continuing to operate like this would only result in more unsold items and little profit, making it hard to maintain mental well-being.
“… I see… That’s a shame; I really love this place.”
“Haha, you always come and buy from me. When you say it’s delicious with a smile, it makes me want to sell it to you for even less than the asking price.”
“… Wait, really?”
“Don’t get too excited. It’s only occasionally.”
“…”
Kanata realized he had been buying without giving it much thought.
The shop specialized in grilling meat harvested from magical beasts and served them on skewers. It was simple food—akin to yakitori in Kanata’s previous life.
The seasoning was excellent, and the quality was good. That’s why it was delicious. However, business did seem far from booming.
“It’s such good food, though.”
“Just hearing you say that means a lot. You see, I once got into an argument with a noble.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. A noble visited this shop and made fun of the meat I offered. I told him off, and while nothing bad came of it, that might be why people are avoiding my stall.”
“… I see.”
Kanata believed there was no real need to fret over this, but he also understood that the store’s image is crucial in these situations.
Even while he was buying meat, customers did come by. However, the number of patrons didn’t correspond to the deliciousness of the food. It was easy to predict that the already-cooked meat would continue to cool down and eventually get thrown away.
“Old man, can I take this meat?”
“Huh? It’s already cold, you know?”
“I’ll heat it up and eat it, so what do you say?”
“… Well, if you’re okay with it.”
“Thanks.”
And so, Kanata bought the meat that had already cooled down.
While it wasn’t as good as just after being freshly grilled, the sauce had done its job, and the flavour remained.
Holding a bag filled with a bunch of meat, Kanata returned to the dorm. He quickly finished his bath and dinner and went back to his room.
“Alright—Mira?”
“I’m here!!”
Upon calling, Mira appeared immediately after he opened the window.
Kanata then took a pendant he had received during his previous trip to the Demon Kingdom and began to pour magical energy into it.
“Shrouza… can you teleport to my room right now?”
“Muh!? Is that you, Kanata? Sure, I can come anytime!”
“Then come over. Is Garula or anyone else around?”
“Garula and Lucia are here. Should I bring them too?”
“Hmm, either way is fine, but if they can come, that would be great.”
“Okay. Wait for a moment.”
Soon after, a magic circle appeared in Kanata’s room, and the three individuals who had been kind to him in the Demon Kingdom showed up.
“We’re here, Kanata!”
“It’s been a few days, hasn’t it, Kanata?”
“Hey Kanata! How’ve you been?”
The atmosphere livened up instantly when Shrouza, Lucia, and Garula arrived.
Technically, gatherings of large groups in the dorm rooms weren’t allowed without permission. But obviously, one couldn’t simply announce they were inviting assassins and demons.
Kanata closed the curtains. Perhaps sensing that it would be best to keep noise from leaking outside, Shrouza cast a spell to make the room soundproof.
“Thanks. It was sudden, so I appreciate you guys coming.”
“We did have work, but it’s fine.”
“… Didn’t you tear apart the necessary documents, Shrouza-sama?”
“… I had no choice.”
“Hahaha! You were almost in tears when those papers got ripped!”
Apparently, the timing had been terrible.
Silently apologizing in his heart to some unknown person, Kanata showed the pile of meat he’d placed in the center of the room to everyone.
“I bought too much. So, I was thinking, why not have a simple meat party?”
“… Looks delicious ♪.”
“It just does!”
Mira and Garula, who were clearly big eaters, eagerly eyed the food. Before they knew it, both were sitting formally, waiting for the feast to begin.
While the sight of a muscular man like Garula sitting so seriously was a bit amusing, Shrouza and Lucia, who understood the purpose, also took their seats quickly.
“It’s just ordinary monster meat… but it seems well-prepared.”
“Indeed. The aroma isn’t bad either… Did you buy all of this, Kanata?”
“Yeah, a few things happened.”
And so, everyone gathered to eat the meat. Even though the skewers were somewhat messy, no one minded it as they chowed down.
Just as Kanata had always thought the meat was incredibly delicious, it was also well-received by Shrouza and the others, including Mira.
“This is absolutely delicious, Kanata-sama!”
“… Like I said earlier, it’s just meat. But I can feel the chef’s emotions through the seasoning.”
Mira was eating with a fervour hard to stop, but even more astonishing were the eating speeds of Shrouza and Garula.
They weren’t eating crudely, but their speed was so fast that it was worrisome they might choke. Sitting quietly next to Kanata, Lucia spoke.
“The seasoning would be quite popular in the demon realm. Both Shrouza-sama and the musclehead here seem to enjoy it, and I find it delightful as well.”
“Is that so?”
“It’s truly delicious. How much does this cost?”
When Kanata answered, everyone’s eyes widened in surprise.
“That cheap!?”
“Whoa… Can they even stay in business?”
“I can’t believe I missed a shop like this!”
Their surprise made them all the more interested in the shop. Kanata felt delighted that they took an interest in a place he found tasty and even happier that they enjoyed the food.
(It’s not just the old man’s shop that’s been helpful to me. There are many other places I find delicious… Ah, is this something I can actually do?)
Kanata clenched his fist, contemplating the idea of a food-tour report. He had done it informally in the Principality, but it could be something more official through streaming.
Of course, he knew that rushing into it could cause panic, so preparation was necessary. Wanting to breathe new life into the places that had helped him, Kanata began to plan.
“Hmm… I’d like this to be distributed in my kingdom as well.”
“As the first event to connect the human and demon kingdoms, a meal might be a good idea, Demon King-sama.”
“In that case, Kanata-kun, would it be alright to preserve some of this? Also, Shrouza-sama, since we are also Haishin listeners, why not negotiate with the Princess and the Saint? We could also directly contract with the shop owner.”
“That sounds good!”
Though Kanata was just beginning to act, things were already set to move on a larger scale.
