Chapter 106: The Marvel of a Communication Device
The advancement of magical devices has made it possible to communicate with distant regions to some extent.
As said before, this was revolutionary in many ways. Information sharing between countries has become more frequent than ever, bringing benefits to many, for better or worse.
Kanata was no exception to those reaping the benefits.
“Who would’ve thought that a regular citizen of the Kingdom would be engaging in this kind of communication.”
|| “Kuku, ‘a regular citizen,’ you say? Well, without the mask of Haishin, you’re just another human.”
|| “Setting aside whether I should be included in this conversation, it’s quite intriguing to have both Kanata and the Emperor of the Empire here.”
One evening, engaged in conversation through communication devices were Kanata, Rosalynde, and Athena.
Haishin, now a global sensation; Rosalynde, the feared War Deity of the Empire; Athena, the Duchess from the Principality. Quite an ensemble, to say the least.
“I’ll be attending next month’s event with Cid, so I wanted to take some time to chat like this.”
|| “Is that so…”
|| “Indeed. I am impressed by the technological advancements of the Principality, not to mention your good relations with the Kingdom at such a young age. I look forward to meeting you.”
|| “That’s an honour, though I wasn’t sure how to respond when you said formalities aren’t necessary. I’m relieved to find that you’re more approachable than the rumours suggested.
Kanata couldn’t help but chuckle. What a remarkable scene this was.
These women held vital roles in their respective nations—the Empire and the Principality. While their conversation tonight might have been casual, their statuses were anything but.
(… Would a normal person flip out or faint at this?)
The setting, complete with a table and chairs, felt like it could turn into a small tea party.
Usually, the communication would be audio-only, but thanks to Kanata’s magic power supply, visuals could also be transmitted and received during any interaction involving him.
“So, Rosa, it’s mostly settled that I’ll be coming there next month… Can I decide on some of the things I want to do on my own?”
|| “Of course. We’ll do as much as possible according to your wishes, but you’ll still have to adhere to some of our rules, given that you’ll be in the Imperial Capital.”
“That’s fine. It’s like work anyway.”
Kanata conveyed his desire to take some time for sightseeing, to which Rosa grinned and assured him that he wouldn’t be bored.
|| “It’s nice that the higher-ups in the Empire are keen on this… In the Principality as well, Haishin’s name is widely known, and there are many fans. However, there are still nobles who argue that Haishin’s presence incites the public.”
|| “That’s the same everywhere. Even here, though we’ve cleaned up quite a bit, it was pretty terrible in the beginning.”
“Haha… Sorry about that?”
But Kanata understood that there were layers of society that wouldn’t accept him.
No streamer—or a person, for that matter—could appeal to everyone, a sentiment he had expressed before. As long as they weren’t disturbing or defaming him excessively, he didn’t particularly mind.
|| “As for that aspect, I’m in the same boat. When Haishin appeared and gained popularity among younger people, it reminded me of the time when I became the Emperor—right after my parents succumbed to illness. Being a young woman, I faced numerous obstacles.”
“… Really?”
|| “I wasn’t too informed about the internal affairs of the Empire, but I guess you had to deal with that too, huh?”
As if lost in memories, Rosalynde crossed her arms and gazed at the ceiling. Without interrupting her, Kanata and Athena waited for her to continue, intrigued by her story.
|| “Nowadays, far more people are on my side than those who treat me simply as a woman. I was originally a person who believed that power is everything. A battle maniac, so to speak. Therefore, given the nature of the Empire, my straightforward prowess gradually reduced the number of people who doubted my position as the Emperor.”
“The nature of the Empire… a lot of people there love to fight, don’t they?”
|| “Exactly. You must have someone like that beside you, Kanata. A girl who can casually unleash high-level magic with a smile, cackling as she wreaks havoc?”
“Yeah.”
Kanata agreed, instantly picturing Anise in his mind.
Mira was also a professional when it came to combat, and she had cheat-level skills in martial arts that could overwhelm nearly any opponent. Once again, he was reminded of how extraordinary the people of the Empire were.
|| “I’m still young, much younger than the rulers of other countries. That’s why, in the beginning, the old ones were quite bothersome. I’ve since replaced them, but back then, just hearing them talk would irritate me.”
“I can imagine.”
|| “Did they, by any chance, plan to use you for their benefit?”
Athena asked, to which Rosalynde nodded and continued.
|| “Though I was known as a ‘War God’ due to my martial prowess, I also had a clear vision of how the country could develop. I knew what was right, what was wrong, what to keep and what to discard. And with that conviction, I dismissed the stubborn old figures who clung to the past. Of course, I followed all formal procedures. There were various cases of misconduct, so punitive measures weren’t difficult… Ah. Thinking about it reminds me once more of how foolish our old figures were.”
Rosalynde placed a hand on her forehead and sighed.
Kanata and Athena didn’t necessarily find this side of her refreshing, but at least she no longer appeared as an intimidating figure. They realized that she, too, had her share of struggles and concerns.
|| “The Empire has changed significantly under your rule… that much has reached even us in the Principality. Most of it centers around the idea that we should never make an enemy of the Empire.”
|| “Kuku, I have no plans for invasion, but if any country openly shows hostility towards us, we’re prepared to crush them. I believe that power is justice and the most suitable solution to problems.”
However, her expression changed as she continued.
|| “I did change the Empire, but then you appeared, Haishin.”
“Me?”
|| “Yes—your unprecedented approach of ‘streaming’ and your innovative ideas… Every time I heard you speak, I felt invigorated, and above all, I was reassured that I was on the right path. Holding onto old beliefs stagnates a nation and halts growth, while new ideas and actions propel it forward. Of course, if executed poorly, this could also lead to decline.”
For better or worse, Kanata’s perspectives had affirmed the path she’d chosen. Even if he hadn’t intended to do so, he had validated Rosalynde’s approach to life.
|| “From that point, things moved quickly. By discussing multiple times with my subordinates, I managed to remove the obstructive elders and those who shared their views from key positions. They would make excuses every time, claiming that nobody cared for the people more than they did.”
|| “They would complain, being removed from their long-held positions.”
|| “They don’t know the struggles of the common folk, which is why they can speak so freely. They look at the commoners but don’t see them as equals. The nobles are content as long as the world suits them; their view of the commoners is purely condescending.”
Rosalynde then concluded with a smile.
|| “If you truly care for the country, hesitating and being indecisive is a betrayal to the people. In this respect, isn’t the Empire, the Kingdom, and the Principality all doing well in governance?”
That day, Kanata gained a new understanding of Rosalynde’s greatness.
Knowing she was the one leading the Empire, he felt a sense of comfort and couldn’t help but smile. He no longer had any worries.
