Chapter 32: Can a Wolf and a Rabbit Be Friends?

“Come on, Anjuu-chan! Come on in, come on in!”

“Pa-Pardon the intrusion….”

Prompted by Chinatsu, Anjuu-chan hesitantly stepped into the entrance. She was probably feeling nervous since this was her first time coming to the house of someone she had just become friends with. Or maybe…

“It must be because she’s stepping into a wolf’s den… More or less.”

“Ah… I-I guess it’s hard for Anjuu-chan to come in, huh…?”

“N-No! I’m fine…!”

Anjuu-chan insisted, but she was fidgeting nervously, looking clearly anxious. Well, Chinatsu’s scent was all over the house. I had been with Chinatsu since forever, so the wolf’s scent didn’t deter me, but for Anjuu-chan, who had just met her today, the scent must had been a bit overwhelming to bear. 

“Alright. I will go prepare drinks. It’s my favorite tea, but since Anjuu-chan is a herbivore too, you might like it.”

“Thank you, Onii.”

“Don’t take her to your room, okay? The feeling of being confined in a small space with a wolf… It’s not exactly the most comforting situation.”

“I know, I know.”

“Also, make sure to have Anjuu-chan sit by the entrance. Don’t raise your voice suddenly, don’t go behind her, and..”

“I know, I know! Geez! Just hurry up and make the tea!”

“I’m just worried about Anjuu-chan…”

Well, Chinatsu was a well behaved child (most of the time), so I doubted she would do anything weird. While worrying about her new herbivore friend, I decided to go and make tea for us all.

“Umm… Is it really true that Chinatsu-san is a wolf and Onii-san is a squirrel?”

“Huh? You don’t believe it…?”

“No, it’s just… You two seem pretty close and the relationship between a squirrel and a wolf is not exactly…”

“Well, we’re siblings after all… Sometimes Onii gets scared of me, but well, we’re both used to it by now.”

“The seniors you were with this morning… Are they like that too?”

“Yukiya-san and Miran-san? Well, Miran-san is our childhood friend, so I think he’s used to her too…”

“Seira Yukiya-san, right? That person… She’s a carnivore too, right…?”

“Yukiya-san is a snow leopard and well, yeah. She’s probably one of the top predators in the food hierarchy.”

“Hiii! B-But Onii-san looked quite normal when interacting with her…”

“That’s right! Even if Yukiya-san allows it, I still think Onii is touching her a bit too much!”

“Hiiiah-!”

“Chinatsu, don’t start shouting out of nowhere like that. You’re scaring Anjuu-chan.”

When I returned with the tea, I saw Anjuu-chan getting scared because Chinatsu suddenly became really excited. I quickly scolded Chinatsu and placed the tea cups in front of the two of them.

“Ah. So-Sorry… But still, everything was Onii’s fault though…”

“Why is it my fault?!”

“N-No! It’s fine! I’m really fine!”

Just what Chinatsu is talking about now… It’s not like I only petted Seira-san and Miran this morning… Wait. Don’t tell me… I didn’t pet Chinatsu? No, no. I mustn’t. I will have to wait until Anjuu-chan leaves at least!

“Alright. I will leave so you two can get—”

“Huh…?”

I said that and was about to leave the room when a flustered voice leaked out from Anjuu-chan’s mouth. Her large eyes, slightly moist from unshed tears as she looked up at me from where she was sitting, seemed to be crying for me. It was as if she was trying to stop me from leaving, like her eyes were begging me,”Please don’t leave me alone with the wolf.”

“A-Alright! Is it okay if I join you two for a bit?”

“Senpai…!”

When I said that and sat down next to Anjuu-chan, she smiled brightly and subtly moved her chair closer to me. Of course, it went without saying Chinatsu started glaring at me. Her gaze turned deadly sharp. 

“Onii! Why are you so kind to Anjuu-chan?”

“I mean, I can’t help it, you know? I’ve finally got to know a fellow herbivore. Of course I want to be as kind as I can.”

“Thank you very much, Senpai! You’re so reliable…♪”

“Ughhh…”

Chinatsu pouted, but she was probably aware that, as a wolf, she was scaring Anjuu-chan. Although she couldn’t hide her displeasure, it seemed she didn’t have any good excuse against me. 

“But still, Anjuu-chan… I really didn’t expect you’d become Chinatsu’s friend though. I thought she might be someone you’d want to avoid…”

“Oi! Onii!”

“No, it’s just… I was feeling really bad about what happened this morning. It really weighed on my mind and since I’ve never really had friends, I was really happy when Chinatsu-san took the initiative to talk to me… That’s why… I started thinking it’d be nice if I could get along with Chinatsu-san and Senpai too…”

“Anjuu-chan…”

“Well, of course! We might be fellow beastmen, but we’re also classmates!”

Chinatsu quickly grabbed Anjuu-chan’s hand and said that to her. Anjuu-chan flinched. Her body was trembling a bit, but she didn’t pull her hands away. Instead, she returned Chinatsu’s gesture with a smile. 

Despite our differences, it seemed all of us would get along well with our new beastman friend.
