Chapter 17: Make Sure to Review and Prepare Yourself Thoroughly

And so, right after leaving school, I headed to the cat cafe that Sagisawa-san had told me about. The place was filled with a variety of adorable cats lounging comfortably as they pleased. This was a heaven for people who loved cats. Despite being a ‘squirrel’, but I wasn’t scared of regular cats. Sure, I might flinch if they hissed, but if they were friendly, I really didn’t have fear toward them. Besides, regular cats were much smaller than me. I really didn’t have any reason to feel threatened by creatures much smaller than me. Basically, I could enjoy a cat cafe, just like anyone else. 

“Whoa-!”

“You’re really popular, huh?”

As soon as I stepped into the cafe, I was immediately surrounded by an impressive number of cats, so much so that even the staff was surprised. However…

“Huh…?”

They suddenly stopped in their tracks when they got close to me, even though they had looked so eager when they ran toward me. With puzzled expressions, they cautiously approached me. They sniffed at me and after that, they had the look of a dumbfounded cat, like the cat from the ‘space cat’ meme.

Why are they reacting like this…?

“Excuse me Customer-san, do you happen to have a cat at home?”

“Huh? Umm… No, I don’t have one…”

This… This must be because I had Seira-san’s scent all over my body. The cats must had noticed my ‘squirrel’ trait at first and they ran toward me, thinking I was food or… A toy. But as they got closer, they caught a whiff of a leopard’s scent, which left them completely confused. That… That must be what had just happened. 

“Umm… So what should I do now?”

“Don’t worry! I think they’ll get used to you soon enough.”

“I-I hope so, but… Could you also teach me how to interact with them?”

“Of course! I’d be happy to!”

And so, as a beginner in the world of cat cafes, I decided to enjoy playing with the cats while receiving proper guidance from the staff. 

“O-Ooooh…”

After a little while, the cats finally started warming up to me. One of the cats had settled on my lap, looking very comfortable while being petted by me. I stroked its neck and the cat let out a soft purring sound. The cat looked so at peace and content.

“They like being petted on the head and neck, but they also enjoy it when you rub their lower back area.”

“Around here?”

I gently stroked the area just above the base of its tail and almost immediately, the cat let out another soft purring sound, looking more relaxed than before. 

“A-Amazing… I can’t believe they can be this relaxed with me…!”

“Customer-san, you’re really good at interacting with them! It’s pretty rare for the cats to get so affectionate like this!”

“Re-Really?”

Maybe because I’m a beastman? To be precise, a beastman of an animal that’s naturally weaker than a cat. Maybe they don’t see me as a threat since in their eyes, I’m weaker than them…

“Ah, right. Can I use this?”

I pulled out the coupon I had received from Sagisawa-san from my pocket. It was a coupon for a free Churu. 

“Absolutely! I will go grab it right away!”

The staff member said before disappearing into the back room only to quickly return with a stick of Churu. I took the Churu from the staff and…

Well, let’s just say the “Churu Effect” is real.

The moment the cats caught the sight of the Churu, they gathered even more around me. Now that they had gotten used to the scent of Seira-san’s sticking to my body, some even dared to climb onto my lip, begging for Churu.

“Wow… So there’s a special spoon for Churu, huh?”

“Yes. you can also put it on a plate for them or let them directly from the package. Some customers even put it on their hand to let the cats lick it off.”

“On their hand?!”

“Yes! In fact, the rough texture of their tongues is what makes it great! It’s simply irresistible!”

The staff explained and a certain memory came to my mind. That time. On the bed. Seira-san’s rough tongue brushed against my ear—

“Customer-san?”

“Ah—! It’s nothing! Nothing at all!”

No, no, no…! I’m here to learn how to  interact with cats, not to get distracted by memories of Seira-san! Focus! Focus!

And yet… Unable to forget the sensation of Seira-san’s rough tongue, I ended up squeezing some Churu onto the back of my hand. This made me wonder if my preferences were getting skewed toward a strange direction.

“That was my first visit to a cat cafe, but I can totally understand why people get hooked on this…”

The cats were adorable, fluffy, warm and most importantly… They were incredibly soothing. I felt so healed. The staff even praised my petting and they told me I was great at interacting with the cats. I had to say, today’s practice session was really worthwhile. 

Fufufu… With this… It won’t be long before I can get my revenge on Seira-san!!

While feeling an inexplicable sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, I headed home with springs in my step.

“I’m home~”

“Welcome back, Onii. You’re home pretty late today, huh?”

“Yeah. I took a little detour today.”

“Hm… Hm?!”

“Chinatsu? What’s wro—”

But before I could finish speaking, Chinatsu flung herself toward my chest. She buried her face against me and started sniffing vigorously. This behavior wasn’t new though. This was something she had done since we were kids, but when she pulled away, she furrowed her eyebrows together. Then, she started fanning the air in front of her nose with her hand. 

“Huh? What?! Do I smell that bad?”

“Onii, just how many cats did you pet today? You’re slathered in their scent!”

“Seriously? Even though I already sprayed Febreze on me before leaving…”

“Like that’s gonna fool a wolf’s nose! Ugh… You reek! Just hurry up and take a bath!”

“O-Okay.. I’m sorry…!”

“And once you’re done taking a bath, come back to me so I can check you again.”

“Ri-Right…”

Under Chinatsu’s pressure, I ended up taking a bath as she commanded. 

Yeah. As expected from a wolf’s sense of smell… Her nose was sharper than mine, a squirrel, but… 

What does she mean by ‘check’…?

Right before I stepped into the bath, I pondered over her last words and then… 

“Sniff, sniff… Mmph… ♡”

“…”

The moment I stepped out of the bath and went to Chinatsu’s room, I was immediately pushed onto her bed. She buried her face against me and started sniffing to her heart’s content until she was satisfied. 

Ugh…! Tomorrow… Tomorrow I will need to study how to train dogs properly…!
