Chapter 2

“Good morning, are you feeling better from the fever?”

“Yeah, I’m fine now. Sorry for making you worry.”

When I enter the classroom, the first person who greets me is my close friend, Kotaro Miyazaki. I’ve known him since middle school, and we often hang out together after school.

“By the way…I heard a rumour, did you break up with Shinozaki-san?”

“…it’s spreading quickly, huh? Yeah, that’s right. I got dumped spectacularly.”

“…are you okay? Last year, too…”

“…I’ve sorted out my feelings these past days…though I think my trauma is getting worse.”

“Hah. I figured as much. Alright, let’s go bowling after school today. Letting off some steam is important, you know?”

“Yeah, thanks.”

After that, we indulge in trivial small talk, mainly about our hobbies.

Kotaro and I often play games together. We talk about how interesting one game is or how terrible another is.

As we are passing time talking to each other, the classroom door suddenly opens with a loud thud.

When I turn to look, Shinozaki-san, who cheated on me, is standing there at the door.

Upon seeing me, she starts to walk my way.

“Shintani, I need to talk to you after school. Do you have time?”

“There’s nothing to talk about with your ex-boyfriend.”

“Ex-boyfriend…? We haven’t really broken up yet…”

“It’s ridiculous to expect us staying together after I saw what you did. Besides, I have something to do after school today, so it’s not possible. Also, don’t you have a new boyfriend now? You should spend your time with him. I’m sure he wouldn’t want you to get involved with me, your ex-boyfriend.”

“T-That’s…”

“Are we done talking about this? If that’s all you need, you should go back to your classroom. Homeroom will start soon.”

“…I-I’m really sorry. But please, believe me! I still have feelings for you…”

“Enough of that. I don’t care about any of that anymore. It’s just that I don’t have what it takes to captivate you. I’m just not enough for you.”

“That’s not—”

“This conversation is over. I won’t have anything more to do with you.  It’s better for both of us.”

“Don’t say you won’t have anything more to do with me…please…”

Huh? What is she talking about? She is the one who had sex with another man behind her boyfriend’s back. What make her thinks that she has the right to say she still has feelings for me?

I really want to say those things out loud, but somehow, I managed to hold myself back.

“Well then, goodbye. We won’t have anything to do with each other anymore.”

“T-That’s…!”

Just then, the chime rings.

Shinozaki-san decides to go back to her classroom.

The atmosphere inside the classroom feels heavy. Well, it’s understandable; such drama doesn’t normally happen inside a classroom.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, strangely enough, I managed to stay calm. Even meeting with Shinozaki-san didn’t trigger my trauma. Don’t worry, I’m fine now.”

“I see. That’s good then…”

Surely, this incident will become a rumour in our school.

They’ll probably treat me as the bad guy again, just like last year. After all, Shinozaki-san has good looks. Though, she is quite similar to Hanamoto-san, her personality is awful.

“Hah.”

I can’t help but to sigh.

Just when the misunderstandings are starting to clear up…I’m going to be called in by the teachers again. Well, I’ll just present the evidence when the time comes.

It was the right decision to learn from my mistakes last year.

As I listen to the teacher in front of the class, those thoughts are running through my mind.
