Chapter 78: Deciding on the School Festival Attraction
“――Now then, let’s decide on our attraction for the school festival.”
The one who spoke was our class representative, Nagatsuki.
She was a serious-looking girl with black, shoulder-length semi-long hair and thin-rimmed glasses, giving off the impression of a literary girl.
In front of us was a list of attractions from last year’s school festival, distributed to each student.
Cafés, haunted houses, plays—mostly the standard choices.
Since this was a high school festival, anything requiring serious cooking was off-limits.
It was only natural; if food poisoning occurred, the school would be held responsible.
However, food-related attractions weren’t entirely banned.
As long as the process didn’t involve actual cooking, cafés were permitted.
“The list you have is just a small selection. We’ll make the final decision by majority vote, so new ideas are welcome. Take some time to discuss with those around you.”
With that, the discussion was casually tossed to the entire class.
A school festival attraction… what should we do?
“What should we pick? No matter what we do, it sounds fun!”
The first to speak to me was Hanaba, who sat next to me.
She seemed to enjoy this kind of thing.
“Honestly, I have no idea. My memory of last year is pretty vague.”
“I see! Then we have to make sure to have a lot of fun this year!”
She flashed me a bright smile, making me realize what a true extrovert looked like.
Hanaba then turned to the two in front of us—Shirafuji and Rin.
“What about you, Luna, and Shinocchi?”
“I… prefer something that doesn’t draw too much attention.”
“That makes sense. It’d be tough for Shirafuji-san.”
“If Luna is there, we’ll probably end up with a long line.”
“Locals will be coming too, so let’s just hope nothing happens.”
“Suspicious people would get stopped at the entrance… right?”
“Unless they’re good at pretending to be normal.”
“Please don’t say such scary things.”
Shirafuji gave me a resentful look, making me feel guilty.
We should be talking about something fun, like the school festival.
If a suspicious person shows up, there’s nothing we can do about it.
The school should have countermeasures in place.
And if someone did get in… I’d do my best to protect them.
Of course, the best scenario would be not encountering anything at all.
“More importantly, let’s get back to the main topic. I think a café would be a good idea. It’s safe, and compared to other options, there’s less time spent actively moving around.”
“I thought a haunted house sounded fun too. Setting up the stage would be tough, though. It reminds me of when we did one in middle school.”
“Either way, Hakuto-kun and Shirafuji-san would probably be really busy.”
“I’ll do my best behind the scenes. No matter what we choose, heavy lifting is probably the only thing I can contribute to. Ah… maybe I could just barely manage playing a ghost?”
With my face, I wasn’t exactly suited for customer service.
Even if I didn’t intend to, I wouldn’t leave a good impression.
On the other hand, a haunted house ghost role might be the perfect fit… or so I thought.
“But if we do a café, do we need costumes? Staying in our uniforms would feel a bit plain.”
“Café costumes… like maid outfits?”
“Then the guys would wear tailcoats?”
“So we’d be butlers? Wouldn’t having all the girls in maid outfits change the theme?”
“Would it be a master-servant café? That sounds interesting, but… if I had to wear a maid outfit and serve people, I’d have to decline due to embarrassment and other issues.”
A cosplay-like uniform plus customer service seemed to be too much for Shirafuji.
Naturally, the ones chosen for customer service would be those with good looks and a friendly attitude.
No matter what, there was no way Shirafuji wouldn’t be picked.
Hanaba and Rin would likely be chosen too.
The only one who seemed safe from all this was me, but I couldn’t exactly be happy about it.
If Shirafuji stood out, the chances of trouble increased.
“――Let’s pause here. If anyone has ideas that aren’t on the list, please raise your hand.”
Nagatsuki’s voice brought the discussion to a halt, and classmates here and there raised their hands to propose ideas.
Most of them were just variations of the options already listed.
Among them was a maid and butler café, which made Shirafuji visibly disheartened.
After that, we were given ballots and instructed to write down our top three choices.
Apparently, having three options was to help coordinate with other classes in case of overlap.
Honestly, as long as it wasn’t the maid and butler café, I didn’t really care.
That one felt a bit different… like it might attract some people who were way too into it.
For now, I played it safe and wrote down a normal café and a haunted house.
For my last option, I chose a shooting gallery—it was easy to imagine since I had tried it at a summer festival.
Once everyone had finished voting, the ballots were collected, and Nagatsuki wrapped things up.
“We’ll let you know once we’ve tallied the votes and made a final decision.”
“I can’t wait to see what wins.”
“As long as it’s not the maid and butler café, I’m fine. The possible pros of seeing Hakuto as a butler are outweighed by the overwhelming cons.”
“What would you even do by seeing me as a butler?”
“I don’t know, it just sounds nice.”
I could sort of understand the feeling, but even if that idea got chosen, I doubted I’d end up as a butler.
If the butler serving the customers looked scary… would that actually work in its own way?
