Meeting Place On A Rainy Day.
After making up with Mikami-san, the midterm exams are now just around the corner.
Honestly, I’m not too worried. Classes have just started, so the test material isn’t that broad, and as long as I’ve been paying attention in class and doing my assignments, there shouldn’t be any major problems.
As the test gets closer, the teachers start dropping hints, so I make sure not to miss any of it. Phrases like “This is important” or “Make sure to remember this” are all the more obvious signs that those things will be on the test, so it’s important to catch those hints.
On that note, after being a bit worn out from listening to every word the teacher says, the sound of rain tapping against the window started adding to my mood.
(Seriously? I can’t eat outside now?)
My favorite spot is outside the school building. What should I do now? I knew it was going to rain, but I thought it would be later according to the forecast. Looks like it’s been delayed a bit.
Staring out the window in a daze, my phone, which I had put on silent and left in my pocket, started vibrating.
It was a notification.
A message had arrived.
“Where do you want to eat today?”
It was from Mikami-san. I had been thinking about it myself… I was almost ready to just settle for eating quickly in the classroom and spending the rest of my time on studying for the test, but maybe Mikami-san has some better ideas?
“Got any good ideas?”
“I’d prefer somewhere that people don’t usually go, you know?”
“Yeah, I get that.”
It seems like Mikami-san has started considering her social status a little more… I’m kind of touched.
If she had suggested a busy place to eat, I’d have shot it down immediately, but it seems like she’s trying to respect my preferences.
“How about the girls’ bathroom near the gym?”
Wait, what?
“Thanks. Let’s meet there.”
Wait, wait, wait.
There’s a lot wrong here.
And don’t just assume I agree before I’ve even responded.
“Hold up. Are you trying to make me a criminal? I don’t want to get expelled!”
“Isn’t it fine as long as no one finds out? Also, the gym bathroom is rarely used, you know?”
That’s still not okay!
Why is the first suggestion a bathroom? Eating in the bathroom is the last resort for a loner, but it’s not something you do with others.
What’s worse, though, is her trying to casually pull me into the girls’ bathroom.
“How about the landing by the stairs that lead to the rooftop? It’s out of view, and no one should come by.”
“Sounds good.”
“Great, see you there.”
Now that was a pretty normal suggestion.
We agreed to meet there, and I grabbed my lunch and stood up from my seat.
***
“Yo.”
“Hey, looks like the weather’s against us today.”
“This is the worst.”
As I climbed the stairs, Mikami-san was already waiting for me.
I waved my hand lightly and sat down next to her.
Come to think of it, we’ve had pretty good weather up until now. Because the skies were mostly clear or cloudy, I was able to eat in my favorite spot. But now, faced with rain, I realized how much trouble a rainy day could cause.
“Still, I can’t believe you knew about a place like this.”
“Well, I thought that on rainy days, I wouldn’t be able to eat in my usual spot, so I spent some free time exploring the school. This place was one of the options I found.”
“One of the options… So, when you were talking about the girls’ bathroom, were you just messing with me?”
“No, I was serious. It was actually the top candidate.”
“Why the hell? That should’ve been the first place to rule out.”
“Well, it’s out of the way, and you can even lock the door. It should meet a very important criterion for you, Kirishima-san, since you want to avoid being seen…”
Hmm. She’s really selling the advantages here.
Honestly, when she puts it like that, it does sound kind of appealing, but… it’s still a bathroom. Eating in a bathroom is just wrong. Plus, the risk if someone finds out is way too high.
“It’d be cramped in a stall with two people. Eating in a bathroom should be reserved for when you’re eating alone.”
“…I think we could fit if we squeezed. We should try it sometime.”
“I’m good, thanks. Why would you even want to eat in a bathroom? The drawbacks far outweigh the benefits.”
“Is that so? That’s a shame. Let me know if you change your mind.”
“I’ll tell you in advance: I don’t think I’ll be changing my mind.”
“…Such a shame.”
There’s so much wrong with this. I appreciate that she’s tried to find a spot for rainy days, but the choice is just bad.
“…By the way, what were the other options?”
“The gym storage, the home economics prep room, an empty classroom with lots of desks and chairs, and… surprisingly, the bike parking lot.”
With so many options, I can’t understand why the girls’ bathroom was the top choice… it’s really strange.
But now that I think about it, there are places that do make sense. Since the rain made outdoor options impossible, a place like the bike parking lot, where we could avoid the rain, could actually work. Maybe I’ll check it out next time.
“This place is quieter than I expected. It’s nice. Since we’re sitting on the steps, I’ll bring something to put under us next time, just for the rain.”
“Yeah, I guess sitting directly on the floor might be uncomfortable for a girl. Sorry, I didn’t think about that.”
“Don’t worry about it. I suggested this spot, so it’s fine. Honestly, it doesn’t matter where we eat as long as it’s with you.”
“…I see.”
I felt like I had just been told something really embarrassing.
But maybe because I had already experienced something even more embarrassing recently, I was able to somehow hold back the urge to squirm.
Honestly… there’s no end to it.
Still, there’s a chance my face might be turning red again, so… I quietly turned my face away from Mikami-san and took a bite of my bread.
