Meddlesome Mama Mikami.
After turning on the rice cooker, we set out for grocery shopping.
Mikami-san took me to her frequently visited supermarket, and we walked slowly while glaring at the high sun.
“It’s hot.”
“It’s still May, but it’s quite warm. Summer might be approaching.”
“Summer, huh… I’m not good with the heat.”
“In that case, you should reconsider your eating habits. If you only eat pre-packaged foods without paying attention to your nutritional balance when it gets hot, you might end up collapsing.”
“…Are you my mother?”
“I’m not your mother.”
Ah, she seems a bit upset.
Still, it feels like she’s genuinely worried, and I need to be careful not to anger Mikami-san, who’s surprisingly nurturing.
“However, I’m really concerned because your home is full of pre-packaged foods and instant ramen.”
“With a convenience store nearby, I can’t help but get lazy. If I’m hungry, I can just pop in and grab something to eat.”
“I can understand that feeling… But from now on, let’s make it a habit to visit the supermarket. For some items, it’s cheaper than at a convenience store, you know?”
It’s true that while convenience stores are always available, they can be a bit pricey compared to regular supermarkets.
But I was honestly surprised that Mikami-san seemed to have a good sense of money management, considering she appeared to have a spending issue. Perhaps she’s surprisingly frugal after all.
“Well, once the tests are over, I’ll try studying cooking. That way, I’ll naturally start going to the supermarket.”
“Your home-cooked meals… I’m looking forward to them.”
“I appreciate that, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to serve decent meals…”
“Until then, let’s cook together. I’ll make sure to teach you until you can do it properly.”
Honestly, I think it’ll take quite a long time before I can cook anything decent, but having Mikami-san as a teacher gives me a lot of confidence.
And… while it might be a bit embarrassing to stand together in the kitchen, I’m actually looking forward to it.
“Thanks in advance, Mikami-mama…”
“Who are you calling mama? Who?”
I accidentally let slip the term “mama,” which I had been thinking in my mind.
Mikami-san pinched my arm rather firmly.
We arrived at the supermarket and pushed a cart with a shopping basket as we moved through the store.
I thought we were just buying ingredients for today’s lunch, but it seems Mikami-san is also planning to buy for dinner and Sunday. She’s really intent on making herself at home here.
As an apology for calling her “mama,” I decided to cover the entire shopping bill, but since Mikami-san will end up cooking my meals anyway, I don’t mind her buying more. Feel free to load up the basket!
“First, to fulfill your request, we definitely need eggs, and let’s also grab some onions, carrots, and potatoes—vegetables that won’t cause any trouble to have on hand.”
“Are we making curry or something?”
“Would you like that? Then let’s prepare to buy meat and curry roux as well.”
“Oh, really? I’m looking forward to it!”
Hearing Mikami-san list off the vegetables, it struck me that it does sound a lot like we’re preparing curry. I suppose her intention is to keep some long-lasting vegetables stocked up. Since the vegetable compartment in the fridge is almost empty, I’d love for her to fill it with her favorite veggies.
“By the way, what seasonings do we have?”
“Just soy sauce and sugar.”
“…At the very least, we should have the basics—‘sashisuseso’—covered. Why do you only have those two?”
“‘Sashisuseso,’ huh? ‘Sa’ is for sugar, and ‘shi’ is for soy sauce. ‘Su’ is… vinegar, right? What are ‘se’ and ‘so’?”
“‘Shi’ is salt. ‘Se’ is soy sauce, and ‘so’ is miso.”
Mikami-san looked a bit exasperated.
“Why is soy sauce the only one that starts with ‘se’? And if ‘so’ is miso, shouldn’t it be ‘mi’?”
“Should we buy salt and miso? As for vinegar, can we leave that for another time?”
“I’ll leave it to you.”
Already, it seems Mikami-san is the guardian of the kitchen.
She can treat me like the wallet and packhorse, and I’m fine with that.
“Your fridge is big enough, so we can buy a lot, but… it’s tricky with items that don’t last long. Mikami-san, can you consume everything if I don’t cook?”
“As long as it’s something I can eat raw.”
“…That’s concerning. Maybe we shouldn’t stock up on anything that doesn’t keep well. Let’s just buy what we can eat today and tomorrow.”
I mentioned trying to cook, but it’s not something I can easily jump into, especially with the midterms looming—an important battle I can’t afford to lose. It seems I’ll be depending on Mikami-san to cook for me today and tomorrow.
But if things are uncertain beyond that, it might be wise not to stock up too much. I’d hate for any of it to go to waste and spoil without being used.
“There’s definitely not enough variety in our cooking, but for now, let’s keep it at this level. Once we get the meat, we can head to the checkout.”
“Okay.”
While my attention drifts around the store, Mikami-san moves quickly through the aisles, as if she has a mental list of what she wants to buy.
She’s clearly experienced with shopping—it really feels like she’s taking on the role of ‘Mama Mikami.’
He just keeps “kicking the can down the road” in respect to dwelling on all the actions she takes to settle into his apartment. He acknowledges that she is doing things that cross the line and are beyond reasonable, but he just keeps going “ho hum” and moves on. To me that is really unrealistic. He would have put the brakes on and questioned her motivation before now, and not back down in the face of her “don’t mind me” retorts.
