Chapter 13: Nothing Weird About It
“Aira.”
“Yes?”
“…When the heck did you sneak that underwear in? And weren’t we only buying two sets, max?”
In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to say, “Sorry, not buying this after all,” at the register.
So yeah—I wound up buying that see-through underwear.
Now, I was trying to scold her a bit.
Even if Aira was my adorable daughter, I couldn’t just let her break promises.
If anything, it was because I cared that I had to get mad when it mattered.
“Take a good look. …See? You only bought me two.”
Just as I was steeling myself to give her a proper lecture, Aira pointed at the bag I was holding and said that, calm as ever.
…Honestly, I didn’t really want to peek into a bag full of my daughter’s underwear.
But considering I’d already seen what was in there—thanks to that whole scene earlier—I went ahead and checked.
Sure enough, just like she said, there were only two sets in there: the black one… and that one.
“…Okay, seriously. When did you swap it out?”
I muttered without thinking.
…Wait, so she really went that far just to get that specific one?
Then what was even the point of me sharing my preferences in the first place?!
“You looked like you liked this one too, Hiroto.”
As if reading my mind, Aira replied like it was the most natural thing in the world.
…Maybe it really was just a coincidence.
But I couldn’t help being a little surprised.
“I don’t like it or anything.”
If I’m being honest, though—any normal guy, especially a high school boy smack in the middle of puberty, would totally be into that kind of thing.
A hundred out of a hundred.
But even so, I still said it.
There was no way I could admit something like that—especially not to my daughter.
“Okay. I’ll show you for real next time, then.”
“…?”
Was she even listening to me just now?
“What do you feel like eating, Aira?”
Swallowing everything I wanted to say, I asked her that instead.
It was already getting pretty late, and if we dragged this out too long, Nee-san might start getting worried.
…Yeah, that’s gotta be it.
No matter what she says, Aira was probably just messing around.
Definitely just joking.
Which means… there’s no reason for me to take any of it seriously.
Probably.
“What kind of food is there?”
“Hmm… give me a sec.”
I pulled out my phone and searched for some nearby chain restaurants, then showed Aira pictures of a few different meals.
Back in the other world, I’m pretty sure she’d heard me talk about smartphones once or twice, so she didn’t seem all that surprised.
…Then again, I did use one at school just like any other student.
She’d probably seen them up close more than a few times.
Even earlier during lunch, I pulled out my phone to message Nee-san—so it’s not like this was her first encounter with one anyway.
“…Muu.”
While I was scrolling through food options and showing Aira the screen, she suddenly let out this exaggerated little grumble.
Then, without warning, she slipped out from beside me, moved around to the front—and before I could react, she leaned back against me.
Just like that, she grabbed my hand and pulled it around her, like she wanted me to hug her from behind.
I completely froze from the sudden move.
But Aira didn’t say a word.
She just gave off this super satisfied vibe—like everything was going exactly according to plan.
Still nestled against me, she took hold of the phone I was holding and casually started scrolling through the images herself.
…It’s fine. Aira’s my daughter.
There’s absolutely nothing weird about thinking she’s cute.
And she is cute. Totally normal.
I’m normal.
This situation is totally fine.
“If you decide on something, let me know. …Can’t promise we’ll definitely go there, though.”
Doing my best to sound calm, I tossed that out as casually as I could manage.
…Whether I actually sounded casual or not?
Yeah, no clue.
