Chapter 9 : A Way of Living (1)
By neither returning to the monastery nor the orphanage, and by not re-registering at the guild, the “Amalia of the past” has died, and she has decided to live on as a new Amalia.
Amalia is a common name in the Kingdom of Leandra, and intermediate level white magicians are not that rare in the whole country. If they don’t stop by a large town like the one where the guild has its branch, they’re unlikely to meet anyone who knows who Amalia is.
‘Even though that’s the case… I have to live with it somehow, don’t I?’
With Yugo on her lap, Amalia was looking out of the window, absentmindedly thinking.
They can stay at the inn for several nights, but their money will run out sooner or later. Before that happens, they need to get some kind of work so that they could have something to eat.
Yugo seemed to feel responsible in his own way, saying “I will get my own food”. He is currently in the form of a child in order to adjust to the human world, but even in such a cute form, he seems to be strong enough to kill a demon with a single blow, and if he wants to, he can become a dragon that is his true form. He can eat raw meat without hesitation, so it looks like he is planning to hunt down some animals in the area.
However, even though the problem of Yugo’s food expenses has been solved, money is still needed to provide Amalia with food and other necessities of life. Yugo doesn’t seem to have a good sense of money, so Amalia has to earn it well.
“In the meantime, let’s see what we can do here in Polk using my white magic…”
“There seems to be no one in this area who is as good at white magic as Mom, so if you ask around, you may be able to find something to do.”
Yugo, who was playing with a wooden toy, looked up and said.
Although Yugo’s actual age seems to be quite old, he appears to be trying to act like a child since he decided to live with Amalia. Everything he sees seems to be new to him, and he is eagerly studying the toy that the owner of the general store gave him the other day. Such gestures are not much different from human children, and seeing him like this warmed her heart and soothed her soul.
Amalia smiled as she stroked Hugo’s soft hair.
“That’s right. I think I’ll go and ask them now.”
“Can I go with you?”
“It’s okay, but you have to behave like a child. And don’t suddenly say ‘What are you doing to me, you rude man?'”
“I-I know!”
Yugo puffed up his cheeks and argued, but of course he was right. He has a clean record.
The day before yesterday, while eating in the inn’s dining room, Amalia was entangled with a young man from the village. The inn also serves as a tavern in the evening, so young people gather here after they finish their work.
He was the same age as Maria, around 20 years old, and he seemed to have drunk a lot. He suddenly approached Amalia, who was eating dinner with Hugo, and hugged her on the shoulder. At that moment, Yugo looked shocked. “What are you doing to Amalia, you little shit?” He growled in a low voice.
Fortunately, all those nearby were drunk. Although they looked at them in suspicion, Amalia hastily mended the situation by saying, “I have a son,” and hugged Yugo, who finally gave up and returned to his seat.
The next day, she bumped into the young man and he politely apologized to her, saying, “I’m sorry about last night”. At the time, she casually asked him if he remembered Yugo’s blunder, but he said “I don’t remember much because I was too drunk”, so she patted her chest, feeling relieved.
Perhaps it was because of this that Yugo looked a little uncomfortable, but he had been through a dangerous situation once, so he would not make the same mistake.
After getting ready, Amalia left the room with Yugo. They had already made friends with the innkeeper, who told them to be careful when they left.
As they left the inn, an autumn breeze blew softly, caressing Amalia’s hair.
In about half a month, it will be a decade since the day Amalia was left behind by Alphonse and the others.
Ten years is a long time, but perhaps because it had passed while she was in the Demon World, the weight of it didn’t move her as much as it should have.
‘But I guess it’s totally different when you look at the monasteries and guilds.’
The reason why she doesn’t feel the weight of time is probably because Polk, where Amalia is now, was just established five years ago. Even though she didn’t feel anything when she looked at the village that was established and grew while Amalia was absent, it would surely be different if she was familiar with the place.
‘Aside from the guild, I’d like to let everyone at the monastery and orphanage know that I’m safe, but… that’s also difficult.’
Breathing out a sigh, she held Yugo’s hand. He seemed to be fascinated by the fallen leaves scattered at his feet, kicking them up with his children’s shoes and looking at them with interest as they rustled.
Amalia went to the assembly hall in Polk. She was told that this place was not really a village, so there was no village chief, but instead there was a representative who was in management of the place.
The representative is basically on a rotating basis, and rotates every six months to a year. The current representative was Bruno, the owner of the grocery store that Amalia and her friends were helping out with on a daily basis.
“Clinic… I see. Well, we certainly don’t have such a facility here.”
“What did you do before when someone got injured or sick?”
Bruno put his hand to his chin and thought about it, when Amalia asked him about it.
It’s been five years since this village was established, so it’s unlikely that not a single person has been injured or sick so far. But there is no clinic, and according to him, none of the residents have any aptitude for white magic.
“We stocked up on as much medicine as we could, and when we had to, we called in a doctor or a white magician from a neighboring town. However, it is not efficient because it takes money and time. In addition, there are those who look down on us and try to rip us off.”
“…I see.”
“Is Amalia planning to stay here with Yugo?”
“Well, it’s not… definite. Though I’ve decided to retire from being an adventurer because Yugo is with me, and I need to keep living in some way.”
Since she can’t say, “Ten years have passed while I was in the Demon World, and my guild registration has been canceled,” she has to say that as a plausible explanation.
Although it is more profitable to kill demons than to earn money as a white magician, it is inefficient to kill demons if she can’t register in a guild, and since she experienced the betrayal of Alphonse’s group, she would rather not form a party. In the first place, there is no way that Amalia, who cannot use black magic, can kill demons.
