Chapter 5 : In the Village (1)
Later, accompanied by Yugo, Amalia managed to descend the mountain.
She had gone through this path on the way up, but even though they were walking through the same route she had taken when she climbed the mountain with Alphonse and the others, she found many things had changed everywhere. The path, which was supposed to be fairly easy to walk through, was blocked by falling rock, and moss and grass were growing all over the place. When Yugo was still in the mountain, she could still see demons here and there, but now, there was no sign of them at all.
Perhaps the heat was caused by a sleeping Yugo, and now that he was in human form, he had calmed down and the scene had changed.
―but.
“…huh? There is a village in such a place.”
Amalia, who was walking along the mountain path with Yugo by her side, shouted out when she saw the scene ahead.
Under a clear sky, a group of houses stood huddled together at the foot of the mountain. When Yugo went on the rampage, there was not a single tree or bush in this area, much less houses.
But it would be convenient if they could meet people without having to go to a distant town. Fortunately, Amalia had some money for herself in her backpack, so it would be easy to get some clothes. Amalia was dressed badly, but since Yugo was completely naked, she needed to buy clothes for him first.
“Let’s go to the village over there. We’ll have to buy some clothes.”
“I’m already fine as it is. Why do people care about such details?”
Yugo doesn’t seem to be enthusiastic, but she convinced him, saying “I’d get weird looks if I took a naked kid around with me”, and he agreed.
Since Amalia and Yugo were supposed to be mother and son, they changed the way they called each other and also changed the tone of their voice. Amalia addresses Yugo in the same tone of voice she used to the children at the orphanage, while Yugo called himself “*ore” and seemed to be trying to speak a language that was a little more like a human child.
(おれ /ore/ meaning “I” or “me” and used by boys.)
She asked Hugo to wait for her in the bushes near the village, and Amalia went to the village alone, passing through the brand-new gate.
The village seemed to have been built only recently. The houses were all relatively new, some of them smelled of wood and others were still under construction.
“Excuse me, I’d like to buy some clothes, which store should I go to?”
There are a lot of things to worry about, but first they need to get some clothes and food.
When she approached a middle-aged woman passing by, she stared at Amalia, who was clearly dressed in an adventurer’s attire.
“There’s a general store over there, but are you an adventurer? That’s a pretty tattered outfit you’re wearing.”
“Yes, I am traveling with my son, but we’ve been lost for a while now, and I need to get some clothes for him.”
She tried to explain their situation in the most natural way possible, and the moment the woman heard the word “son,” her cheeks relaxed.
“Yeah, it’s tough being young and hungry… There aren’t many children’s clothes available, but it’s a good idea to pack an adult hem. Oh, and there’s an inn over there, so if you’re having trouble finding a place to stay overnight, you can try that place later.”
“Yes, thank you very much for your kindness.”
“It’s okay. It is important to earn money as an… adventurer, but you must not make your son feel lonely. You have to take good care of him.”
The woman added and waved her hand as she left. She must have already experienced childbirth and parenting at her age, and that’s why she was giving advice to the young Amalia out of kindness.
The advice itself was very much appreciated, and Amalia was glad that she was concerned about her. However, it seems that Amalia, not Yugo, will be the one being protected, since Yugo said, “Even in this form, I can kill ten humans in an instant”
At first glance, the house the woman told me about looked like an ordinary house, but there was a sign for a general store on the front door. The store was small, but after consulting with the owner, she bought some women’s clothes and children’s shirts and pants from the store.
“You’re an adventurer with a child? That must be tough.”
The shopkeeper, a man approaching old age, nodded his head when he heard Amalia’s story, and offered a small discount for the clothes. Amalia refrained from accepting because she felt like she was somehow tricking him, “No matter what the circumstances, a mother who tries her best is always worth supporting”, he said while pushing Alamia out of the store.
Other than clothes, they also needed food, but first they had to get themselves cleaned up. She hurried out of the village and returned back to Yugo.
…
Yugo pointed the palm of his hand at the rock, which looked like it could hold a handful of rocks, and shouted, “Yeah!” Immediately afterwards, a tremendous flood of light blew the stone to pieces.
‘…what? What, now?’
Amalia stood there in shock at what she saw, but Yugo seemed to have noticed Amalia’s presence and turned around, smiling.
“Ama― Mom! I’ve been waiting for you!”
“Eh, yeah…what was that just now?”
“I’ve been exercising to get used to this body. But all the stones in this world are so fragile. Just a little force and they’ll break right off.”
Yugo said regretfully, brushing away the shattered pieces of stone with his hand. He seemed to have noticed the clothes that Amalia was holding and looked at them sullenly.
“Are those my clothes?”
“…yeah. You’ll have to put these on first.”
Amalia had helped children change their clothes many times at the orphanage. Some of the children were even reluctant to put on their underwear or run away without putting on their underwear, so it was relatively easy for Yugo to follow the instructions Amalia gave him; “Put this on,” “Put your hands up,” and “Be patient.”
As Yugo changed into his children’s clothes, Amalia quickly dressed in her new clothes. During this time, Yugo was staring at Amalia’s body, but since he looked like a child of about five years old and had been a dragon until a few hours before, she didn’t mind being stared at naked by him.
“Human beings have a strange body structure…”
“Well, compared to a dragon, I suppose. But you’re going to be seeing a lot of them, so you should get used to it.”
“Yeah, I’ll act accordingly.”
“Good answer… Let’s go together then.”
Shoving the clothes she was originally wearing into an empty bag, Amalia took Yugo’s hand.
There are some things she wanted to check out, like the changes in Dragon Mountain and the settlement that has somehow been established. Besides, they should gather what they need in order to return to the town where the guild is located.
Amalia was registered in the guild as a white magician. She has been abandoned by Alphonse and the others, but she will still remain a member of the guild even if she left the party.
The guild has a system that provides some money to guild members who have difficulty continuing their work due to unforeseen accidents or illness. She had her guild membership certificate in her luggage, so she could explain her situation to the guild when she got back to town, and the guild would grant her some money to spend for the time being.
And ― if she could, she would leave the guild right then and there and return to the monastery. To be honest, she didn’t make as much money as she thought she would in the past year, but a certain amount of money must have been sent to the monastery.
Since she had been betrayed by her friends, she should leave the adventuring business and work at the orphanage with Yugo. Yugo may be a bit naive, but he’s not stupid, so she was sure he’ll understand if she explain it to him properly.
‘Yeah, I’m sure we’ll get by.’
