Chapter 49 : Anniversary Festival (1)
The next day, Amalia was staring at the mirror after breakfast.
She wore the dress Eva had picked out for her, so all she had to do was to fix her hair and apply makeup. Eva taught her how to do this, so she just needed to do it like how Eva did.
‘…Mmn, so hard! Why can’t I get the color to get on as I want it to?!’
She tried her best to apply the color to her eyelids with her shaking hands, but she couldn’t seem to get it right. She had to wipe her face and start all over again, because she was applying too much, unevenly, or getting it to her eyelashes, making it impossible to blink.
Yugo, who had been observing nearby at first, left the room halfway through, perhaps because he was getting impatient with Amalia. He was already dressed in his children’s clothes and ready to go, so Amalia had to get ready as soon as possible.
‘How in the world do girls do so much hard work every day…? I admire you…’
Finally, she managed to look like what Eva had done, if not exactly as she had done it. She also applied lipstick, trimmed the tips of her nails, and put her hair up.
Amalia’s hair is a glossy chestnut color, and when she lets it fall as it is, it reaches her shoulders. Since she couldn’t have a very elaborate hairstyle, she just tied her hair into a single bun and twisted the ends of her hair around the hairline to create a braided style. She then added a piece of fabric flower ornament to the hair ties, so she may look a little more sophisticated.
“Mom, I think the festival has started!!”
“Ah, yeah, I’m coming!”
Just as she managed to look presentable, she heard Yugo’s voice outside the door and hurriedly gathered up her scattered makeup and brushes. It took longer than she had expected, but she was glad she had anticipated it and started getting ready early.
In the corridor beyond the room, Yugo was waiting, fidgeting. He stood tall and was looking out the window, from which he could see the whole spectacular festival scene.
“Mom, it smells so good! Do they sell food too?”
“Yes, they should be selling a variety of foods for us to eat. Okay, let’s go.”
“Yeah!”
Yugo held hands with Amalia and chanted a spell in a low voice. Then her body became warm and fuzzy for a moment, and then quickly subsided.
Thanks to the space magic that Yugo had just cast, Amalia’s presence was hardly noticeable to anyone other than “those who deliberately try to find her”. Although she wouldn’t attract much attention from passersby, she could do her shopping without any problem, and Leonardo, who would be joining her during his work, would be able to recognize Amalia.
Holding hands with Yugo, they left the inn. The inn Leonardo had booked for them was located near the center of town, so even though they had just stepped out of the door, the crowd was already huge, and Amalia, who hadn’t been in a crowd in a while, couldn’t help but squeeze Yugo’s hand.
‘They definitely need to avoid getting lost. It might break Yugo’s spell and Yugo, who is not used to crowds, might get confused…’
Yugo also grasped Amalia’s hand firmly, but his golden eyes glittered as he glanced around impatiently.
Stalls, flower decorations, people dressed up, music coming out of nowhere, and the smell of food. It was full of things that tempted Yugo.
This morning, they barely ate breakfast in preparation for the festival. Thanks to this, both Amalia and Yugo were hungry, so they decided to find a stall first, and have a meal as soon as possible.
Yugo loves to eat, so when they approached a stall, he would cheer and ask Amalia a lot, “What’s this? “What is that?” “What does that sell?” “What is this?” Amalia answered what she could with her knowledge, but some of the dishes, such as those of exotic origin, were not clear to her.
“Uncle, is this some kind of meat dish?”
“Hmm? Oh, it’s a traditional dish of Edith. It’s roasted chicken covered with a fruit sauce, usually skewered like this. That’s why it’s sold all over town in Edith, and it’s a staple of the food market.”
“Hmn…it looks sweet and delicious”
In the man’s hand, a long skewer of yakitori was laid out. The surface was glossy and shiny, probably because of the fruit sauce used, and it looked sweet and spicy.
“Yugo, would you like to try some of this? It’s a kind of grilled chicken.”
“Eat! You want some, Mom?”
“Okay. Let’s eat them one at a time.”
When he heard that this dish was made with meat with some added sweetness, Yugo was immediately on board.
When they ordered enough for two, the man handed them the yakitori and said, “You’re a cute little guy. Eat a lot and grow up!” He also called out to Yugo. Amalia vaguely wondered if Yugo’s true identity as a golden dragon the size of a small mountain might be getting bigger and bigger.
Some people walked around while eating, but if they were careless, they might stain the dress she had bought. So, they left the crowd and sat down on the edge of a flower bed planted with winter flowers and enjoyed their grilled chicken.
The grilled chicken had cooled down a bit, but when she bit into it, the sweet and spicy juices spilled out. She was glad she had a handkerchief on her lap just in case.
“Mom, this is so sweet and delicious! I wonder if we can make it at home?”
“It’s hard to tell without knowing exactly what the ingredients and quantities are, but I think I can make something similar.”
Amalia’s mouth is small, so she eats small amounts at a time, while Yugo seems to have devoured it in an instant, but he seems to really like it.
This flavor seems to have…purine and gwam in it. If you put the chopped fruit in a regular sauce and let it sit for a while, would it make a good sauce for grilled chicken…?
