Chapter 32 : A Maiden’s Tale (1)
Yugo, who had been pondering something with a curved piece in his hand, looked up and nodded seriously.
“Yeah. I thought that human entertainment would be trivial, but it’s not. This puzzle has a lot of depth, and the spinning figurines and rocking rides are a lot of fun!”
“As expected, there is no such thing in the Demon World.”
Amalia put the chopped fruit in the pot, poured hot water over it, and turned the hourglass upside down.
She brought this hourglass the day she got paid, and it seems that Yugo enjoys watching the sand fall from top to bottom.
“…we demons don’t have the concept of “playing” like humans do. I’m sure you’ll be able to understand why. I’m glad I came here… things like this hourglass didn’t exist there, and the human world is really interesting. I’m glad I came.”
“That’s right. We’ve seen a lot of interesting things.”
“Yeah!… oh, but the best thing for me was that I got to live with my mom!”
Turning around quickly, Yugo said loudly, then hugged Amalia and kissed her on the cheek. In the beginning, Yugo was a bit puzzled by the idea of kissing, but lately he has been actively kissing her when he is happy.
This would be a disaster if he became a kisser in the future, but apparently he only kisses Amalia, and he also once said with a disgusted look on his face, “I’m not that unprincipled.”
“…oh, but not only my mom, Leonardo is also a good guy for a human kid, so it was probably a good thing that I got to meet him.”
“Haha… well, compared to Alphonse and the others, he really is much nicer.”
“If Leonardo is a ‘good guy’, then those kids are no better than trash bugs… tssk. If my mom gave me permission, I’d track down those little bastards and bleed them to death in an instant.”
“Alright, we have guests now, so you can’t make any disturbing remarks.”
She scolded Yugo for saying something that doesn’t fit a five-year-old child.
There were Polk residents in the living room across the hall, and Amalia was making a cup of fruit tea for them.
When all the sand had fallen out of the hourglass, Amalia poured the tea into a cup. There was a slightly sweet scent in the air from earlier, but when she poured the bright red liquid into the cup, the mellow aroma spread throughout the room.
Today’s tea is a fruit tea based on gwam, a red fruit found in damp fields, flavored with prune and mole.
Gwam is a tough fruit about the size of the tip of a thumb, and the seeds inside are a bit of a hindrance when eating. Therefore, Guam was crushed firmly and then squeezed to make it easier to drink as black tea.
After Yugo had helped with taking the cups and trays out of the cupboard, he went back to playing with the puzzle. When Amalia entertained the customers, Yugo would sometimes be present, but only if the customer was a young man. She asked him why, but all she got was a vague answer: “A man’s promise.”
“Here you go. Today we’re having gwam fruit tea.”
“Thank you! Wow, it smells so good and it looks so beautiful!”
In the living room, Amalia was greeted by a girl with pigtails.
She was wearing an apron dress, which is the standard dress for women in Polk. Her large, beady eyes are green, and her skin is healthily tanned.
Her name is Eva, and she is the sole daughter of the innkeeper in Polk. In fact, she had taken care of Amalia when she was staying at the inn with Yugo, and she was very fond of him.
Yugo said, “I’m going to be handsome in the future!” And Eve would react, “Really cute!” Although Yugo didn’t like to be pampered, since Eva had a good relationship with Amalia, he was also quite fond of her.
Eva didn’t come here because she needed something to do with white magic.
Her purpose was to have a chat and to have Amalia’s tea.
The rumor of Amalia’s tea seemed to have spread without her knowledge, and she had gained a reputation for making tea with health benefits.
It seems that everyone believes that the effect of Amalia’s tea is caused by white magic, so it appears that the mysterious power she inherited from her mother will not be revealed. Yugo also said, “Fortunately, your white magic is a good cover”, so now she would gladly invite anyone who came to her house to have a cup of tea while chatting with them.
“Oh, I brought you this today. Isn’t Yugo still growing up? My dad simmered this chicken stew yesterday, but you can have it for dinner if you like.”
“Thank you as always! I’m sure Yugo will be happy too.”
Eva then pulled out a small jar from her bag and handed it to her. She opened the lid, revealing a sweetly seasoned chicken stew.
Yugo is not in this room right now, but he is very nosy and has good hearing, so he is probably stuck to the wall of the kitchen right now, spying on the situation.
Even though it was Amalia’s homemade tea, the raw materials were not completely free. In addition to that, drinking this tea was said to make one feel strangely energetic, so everyone in Polk always brought a gift with them, even if they just came to drink tea.
Like Eva this time, it could be food, fruit, or sweets, and Amalia was really grateful to them. This village is made up of people helping each other.
Eva seems to have turned nineteen this year, but there are very few women in Polk, only around twenty. She used to have a childhood friend who moved here at about the same time as Eva, but she was married off to a mercenary from another country about two years ago, and Eva has been feeling lonely ever since.
For Amalia, having another woman around her age is a blessing in disguise. They can talk to each other, and they can discuss and confide in each other in ways that only women can.
“…but then again, I was totally wrong about that.”
“What?”
When she asked, Eva glanced at the kitchen and smiled meaningfully.
“I meant Leonardo-san. I swear, I thought he was Yugo’s father.”
“…ah, ah… well, they only have similar hair color, though.”
Everyone in the village is probably wondering about Yugo’s father, but only a few are talking about it. Eva is the only one who is willing to ask questions and poke fun at her, as they have consulted each other on various matters.
But Amalia knew she wasn’t asking questions to torment or embarrass her, so she didn’t feel too bad about being asked something she didn’t want to be forced to talk about.
