Chapter 25 : Dragon Mountain Picnic (2)
After a while, Yugo came back. His hands were black, probably from playing in the sand.
“Mom, are you done talking?”
“Yes… yes, stop right there.”
With one hand raised, Yugo suddenly stopped on the spot.
When he realized that Amalia seemed to be concerned about his hand, he muttered, “Oh, I need to wash them.” He washed the mud off his hand using the water he conjured himself. It’s really convenient to be able to use magic of all attributes.
The three of them decided to go back down the slope to the grassy area and take a break there.
Amalia pulled out a cloth sheet from the backpack Leonardo had given her and they sat down on it.
“Here, Yugo. Bread with meat in it. Don’t you like it?”
“Yeah! Thanks, Mom!”
“It was Leonard who brought it all the way here.”
“…yeah. And Leonardo, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Leonardo smiled and stroked Yugo’s hair, “Don’t mess it up!” He puffed out his cheeks, but leaned back quietly. After all, Leonardo was used to dealing with children in his own way, and Amalia was relieved to see that Yugo seemed quite happy to be taken care of by Leonardo.
“…speaking of which, Amalia-san. Are you sure you won’t contact the monastery or the orphanage?”
As she was wiping the crumbs from Yugo’s mouth with a handkerchief, Leonardo asked her about it. He was holding a loaf of bread that was a size larger than the one Yugo was holding, and was looking at Amalia.
“…I often keep in touch with the orphanage, and they were all concerned about you, Amalia-san. When I visited last year, Director-sensei also mentioned you.”
“Director-sensei…”
“Yes, she did. And she seemed to be in good health as well, so if you could just send a letter, I’m sure he’d be pleased.”
Amalia lowered her gaze.
The Director of the Orphanage was a benefactor who had taken care of Amalia since she was a baby. After her mother died when she was just ten years old, she took her mother’s place and raised her.
“…I wish I could somehow tell her that I am still alive.”
“That’s right. If you like, I can mention Amalia-san to the orphanage next time I write to them. You can’t go back to the monastery for various reasons, but I can tell them that I was able to see Amalia-san again, and that you’re doing well and living happily.”
“…that’ s right. I’m sure Director-sensei will understand. Thank you.”
The guild members and Alphonse knew that Amalia was from a monastery and was close to the Director of the orphanage. It’s doubtful that they still remember her, but it would be troublesome if Alphonse somehow learned of Amalia’s survival.
Since Amalia had already decided to not take revenge or get involved, then she only wanted a handful of people to know that she was still alive.
‘Originally, Director-sensei and the nuns didn’t seem to think so well of Alphonse… it should be okay.’
…she was the one who followed Alphonse, who was not well-liked, but there was no point in retelling a story that was already over.
Yugo, who had been quietly listening to the conversation while eating his bread, looked up.
“Hey, who is this Director-sensei* that Mom sometimes refers to?”
“I haven’t told Yugo about this yet. I lost my mother when I was a child, and I grew up in an orphanage where orphaned children live together. Director-sensei is the head of the orphanage, and she’s like a mother to me.”
(いんちょうせんせい – /In chō sensei/
院長 – /Inchō/ -meaning Director, I added the sensei in this chapter.
Since they mentioned the director many times. )
He nodded his head and swallowed the bread as she explained it to Yugo, who was not familiar with the vocabulary of the human world.
“I see. Then the Director-sensei for mom is like how mom is for me, isn’t it?”
“Well, yes. We’re not related by blood, but we’re taking care of each other.”
“So you’re saying that the Director is my… grandmother?”
Amalia and Leonardo looked at each other at Yugo’s words, and then chuckled.
Well, indeed, to Yugo, Director-sensei is his “mom’s mom”. So, to his knowledge, Director-sensei would be his grandmother.
“Fufu, maybe so.”
“I see. I guess it’s thanks to Director-sensei that Mom is so beautiful and kind.”
“Oh, thank you. It’s okay to be sweet, but I wonder how I look…”
“What? But Mom is the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. Don’t you think so, Leonardo?”
“Huh? Me?”
Leonardo, who had been quietly drinking his tea while Amalia and Yugo were talking, was so startled by the sudden change of subject that he almost dropped his thermos.
Leonardo hurriedly caught his thermos and swept his gaze from side to side as if he was in trouble.
“That’s… indeed, Amalia is very beautiful… yes!”
“I’m sorry, Leonardo. I know you’re just forced to say it.”
“That’s not true! I think Amalia is more beautiful than any woman I’ve ever met!”
“Eh?”
“Eh.”
Amalia and Leonardo look at each other unconsciously.
Yugo, the one who started the conversation, said, “This is so sweet!” He seemed to have lost interest in the current conversation and was absorbed in his tea.
‘Let’s see… this might be quite embarrassing…’
She has chestnut hair and indigo eyes like her mother.
When she was young, she was praised as “a beautiful woman, much like my mother”, but when she went out into the world, she realized that her appearance was no better than most people.
The girls she saw in town were beautifully dressed and looked gorgeous, and after the addition of the jewel-like beauty of Esmeralda, Amalia no longer seemed like a stone found in a convent.
Leonardo, of course, has seen many beautiful women. In fact, he had met Esmeralda a few years ago when he was visiting Kyros. Perhaps Esmeralda at that time was in her twenties, but her facial features were so different from Amalia that she would still be a beautiful woman even if she was a little older.
“…it’s nice of you to say so, but isn’t Esmeralda-sama more beautiful?”
“Esmeralda-sama? I’m sure she was beautiful, but―”
―she felt as if a small needle pricked her chest.
“―she was a little too emotional, and she dressed way too flashily, I don’t like it… and I felt that there was something dark about her… anyway, I think Amalia is more beautiful.”
“Uh-huh. Thank you.”
Amalia thanked him awkwardly, unintentionally speaking in one breath.
If you ask people all over the world to vote, Esmeralda would get far more votes than Amalia. That’s only natural, and on the contrary, if her own side got more votes, people would wonder if the world’s aesthetic sense had gone mad, or if some questionable vote tampering was going on behind the scenes.
Leonardo, however, voted for Amalia. Since it was him, she didn’t think he would vote for her out of flattery or pity.
It is better to be praised by one trusted person than by a hundred strangers.
When Amalia realized this, she felt embarrassed and took a bite of the bread with all her might, which made her choke and caused Leonardo and Yugo to panic.

Translator’s Notes:
I made a mistake about the gender of the Director. I thought the director was a man. She was always mentioned as The Director, who knew she was a woman.
hahaha…I will edit the previous chapter where the director was mentioned!
Anyway, since the appearance of both Amalia and Esmeralda were mentioned in this chapter, I post a pic for the two of them. Actually, I have few pages from the vol of the manga, and plan to post it after translating the manga a bit at the end of vol 1, cause there’s a character intro at the end…Just spoiling you guys, the manga drawing is actually very cute…so look forward to the character intro! hahaha….
