Chapter 16 : The Golden Dragon could not read the Atmosphere
“Leo―”
“Amalia-sama, I thought you were dead… it was about five years ago that I received a notice from the guild. They said you most likely died in the middle of your journey, so they decided to cancel your registration―”
Amalia swallowed down her words when he said that in a trembling voice.
‘After all, I was already a deceased person five years ago―’
Leonardo’s arms trembled as he hugged Amalia’s body.
“But I didn’t believe it―! There was no way I could just assume that you were dead when no dead body was found! I was sure that you are still alive somewhere!”
“…”
“I’ve missed you―”
―Amalia was shocked as if she had been struck in the chest.
I missed you.
She never thought that she would hear those words in such a heartbreaking way.
‘Leonardo believed that I was still alive… for ten years.’
For Amalia, the last decade was just a moment. But for Leonardo, it must have been a decade spent with a wandering mind.
The armor that had been covering Amalia’s heart instantly fell away when those honest and straightforward feelings were thrust upon her.
“…Leonardo. I-I really wanted to meet you too.”
“Eh…”
“We made a promise, right?”
When Leonardo’s arms that were restraining her loosened, she pulled herself away and took the amulet from her breast pocket.
Since it was brought together with Amalia to the Demon World, even if it was made more than ten years ago, it was still in good condition. The small flower, which had been Amalia’s emotional support throughout her journey, was still blooming without breaking down.
Leonardo’s throat moved and his gray eyes narrowed happily when he saw the amulet. His cheeks were slightly tinged with a reddish hue, which could have been caused by something other than the setting sun coming from the western sky.
“I guess you kept the…”
“Yes. It’s been a hard journey, but it kept me safe.”
“Amalia-sama. I―”
Leonardo squeezed her hand as she held the amulet. The small hand that Amalia had once held by her hand has now grown so large that it completely covered Amalia’s hand.
Looking at his feverish gray eyes, Amalia swallowed her saliva, not knowing why.
‘What the hell is going on here?!’
Leonardo’s gaze was extremely hot and her hands were gripped tightly. If she had really tried to pull herself out, she might have been able to do so, but her body couldn’t move at all.
His gray eyes relaxed happily.
His lips thinly parted, “Amalia-sama”, he called in a low and gentle voice―
“Mom! Mom!”
―The sound of a boy’s call brought Amalia back to herself.
Perhaps Leonardo, too, had come to his senses.
They both turned around at the same time to see a blond boy coming up the hill. His hair and clothes were a little disheveled, but there were no noticeable injuries. It seemed that he had safely caught his prey today and had enjoyed it.
When Yugo saw Amalia and Leonardo holding hands on the hill, he stopped and looked a bit grim. But it was only for a moment, and soon he smiled and hugged Amalia around the waist.
“Mom, let’s go home! I want to drink my mom’s brewed tea!”
“What? Well, yeah…..um, that’s fine, but―”
Yugo, can’t he read the atmosphere. In fact, he could have read it if he wanted to, but she thought he would still have dared to ruin the atmosphere.
‘No, we’re supposed to be mother and son, so you can call me mom if you want… I don’t mind!’
―Amalia looked at Leonardo with an awkwardness that almost made her whimper. Leonardo was also looking at Amalia.
Surprised or confused, he didn’t seem to look like either. but the “nothing” look on his face made it difficult for Amalia to react.
Leonardo only moved his eyes and looked at his hand. Then, as soon as he saw it, he quickly took his hand away and modestly averted his gaze.
“…um…I’m sorry! I suddenly… I’m sorry!”
“Uh, yeah……? Well, hey, calm down, okay?”
“I was careless, since Amalia-sama looks the same as when she was young! I’m sorry, really! I’d like to say hello to your husband―”
“Wait, wait! I’m not married!”
“Mom, let’s go home.”
Amalia shouted in a hushed voice as Yugo, who still refused to read the atmosphere, clung to her legs.
“Well, there’s a lot of reasons for this―”
“Hey, who is this guy? Is he a friend of Mom’s?”
“Yugo needs to be a little quiet, okay?…Leonardo”
“…yes.”
Leonardo replied properly, but his face, which had been slightly flushed just a moment ago, was now very pale, and his eyes were full of uncertainty.
‘…ah, jeez! If it comes to this, you’ll just have to take it upon yourself…!’
Amalia cleared her throat.
“It’s a little― no, it’s a lot more complicated than that.”
