Chapter 11 : Amalia’s Black Tea (1)
Amalia and Yugo’s application to stay smoothly went through.
Bruno asked Amalia, “why don’t you just become a resident?” But instead of becoming an official resident, for the time being, she decided to go with the “traveling white magician staying in Polk” status.
However, if they live in this village, they would need a place for her to treat the wounded. There was a vacant house, where a young man, who previously lived there until last month, got married and moved out, so she and Yugo decided to live there.
“The furniture here is basically for one person, but Yugo’s furniture will not be a problem. You can arrange the interior as you like, so you, mother and child, can live more comfortably.”
“Thank you for everything.”
“Don’t worry about it. In return, if anyone gets hurt, you’ll have to work hard.”
Bruno laughed after guiding Amalia to the empty house and stroked Yugo’s hair, then he left. Yugo seemed to have forgiven him in his own way and said, “See you later, Grandpa,” giving a wonderful child’s performance.
The house was a two-story building, with the kitchen, living room, and storeroom on the first floor. But there was only one bedroom on the second floor. It was sad that there was not much furniture, but the man who originally lived here was a mercenary belonging to the guild, so he spent more time working outside than at home.
“…there’s not much cooking utensils. I wish I could get them to give some away at a bargain price.”
“Does Mom cook?”
Amalia smiled and nodded when Yugo asked her as she stood in the kitchen checking the utensils.
“Yeah, well, a little. I’m more of a tea brewer than a cook or baker, though.”
“Tea?…ah, that’s what humans drink while eating rice. “
Yugo tilted his head coyly. His soft blond hair followed his movement easily, tickling his white skin.
“…come to think of it, Yugo doesn’t drink much water. Do dragon races need to stay hydrated?”
“No, it seems that the amount of water needed depends on the species. I don’t have to drink much water because I’m a light dragon, but it seems that water dragons are in great danger if they stay too long in dry areas, and fire dragons don’t need to drink water.”
Yugo gave a quick explanation, though she thought she heard some disturbing words just now.
“…Light Dragon?”
“Yeah, that’s my kind. See how golden my scales are? That’s the sign of a light dragon, and we’re good at light magic.”
“What? You can use light magic!”
She lets out an exclamation of dismay and stares at the boy sitting on the floor at her feet.
There are races for each attribute of dragons, and as Yugo said earlier, there are common names such as “water dragon” and “wind dragon” that bear the attributes.
Although they practiced magic according to their attributes, there are few people who can master light magic, and it can be said to be the same for demons. In the first place, there are few demons born in the Demon World that have an aptitude for light― she believed it was written in a book in the guild’s library.
“Well, I seem to have been born from a light dragon, and if you look at this color, you can tell that I’m a light attribute, right?”
“…no, no, I’m sorry, I had no idea.”
“It’s okay, because I don’t care. The guild guys who told my mom to take me down probably didn’t know about my race. Oh, but when I’m in this form, I’ll be less powerful than when I am a dragon, but I can still use magic normally, so if anyone tries to play a trick on my mom, I’ll use my magic on them!”
Yugo’s golden eyes twinkled as he said reassuringly, but as a rare species of light dragon, Amalia was worried that his “Yeah!” would cause the earth to split open and the mountain to shatter.
…that’s a good idea.
“As a light dragon, you hardly had any need to drink water, and of course you still have no concept of tea.”
“I guess not. Hey, what is this tea?”
Perhaps intrigued, Yugo looked up at Amalia with sparkling eyes. Although Yugo had a tendency to use formal expressions and knew difficult words, he was not familiar with things related to human life. Even things that are not important to Amalia are of great interest to him, asking, “What’s that?” “Is that tasty?” “It’s really cute.”
‘…yeah, that’s right. He seemed to drink little water, but I still wanted to make tea for him.’
She looked around.
There doesn’t seem to be any pot of tea in this house, which doesn’t have enough cooking utensils in the first place. There are pots and kettles for boiling water, but to make a good cup of tea, she would need specialized tools.
‘I had an outdoor one from the time I was traveling, but I left it with the guild before we climbed Dragon Mountain…’
Amalia’s tea was well received by Alphonse and the others, so for the first six months or so, she was actively making tea at the inn. However, as Amalia’s position deteriorated, she no longer had the time to do her hobby of making tea.
And when she received the request to defeat the golden dragon, Amalia had left all of her gear in her backpack because it would interfere with her climbing.
Amalia’s registration must have been cancelled five years ago, so naturally the tea utensils she had entrusted to them must have been discarded. It was not of very high quality, but it was light and sturdy in spite of its appearance, so it was the perfect travel companion.
“I’d love to make Yugo a nice cup of tea, but I don’t have the right tools… if it’s okay with you, why don’t you try it later?”
“Yes! Mom’s brewed tea, I want to drink it!”
Looking at Yugo, who was genuinely happy, she began to doubt that this blond boy was that giant dragon.
There were no tea utensils, but tea leaves were sold at the general store. After cleaning the house and organizing her belongings with Yugo, Amalia left him at home and went to the grocery store by herself after he said, “I think I might be a little sleepy…” and started dozing off.
…
“Ah, Amalia. How was the house?”
“It’s very clean and more than enough for me and Yugo to live together in.”
Bruno had already gone back to work at the store, so Amalia quickly brought up the subject of tea leaves.
When he heard that Amalia’s hobby was making tea, he raised his eyes and muttered, “Tea set…”
“We do sell tea leaves, but do you want to steam the herbs yourself instead of just using ready-made tea leaves?”
“Yes, but I need a special pot for that, so I hope to buy one soon!”
“Alright. The next time the merchant comes, I’ll ask him about it. I hope you can bear with what we have until the merchant arrives.”
“No problem. Thank you, Bruno.”
She would be very grateful if she could also talk to the merchant. After all, Amalia was very particular about her tea and wanted to brew it from scratch, but until she had the right tools, she would have to use ready-made tea leaves.
Bruno brought over three cans of tea. All of them were inexpensive tea leaves used by the ordinary citizens of Leandra, and Amalia had drunk them many times.
“These are the three types we always have on hand at home. I don’t have to tell you the characteristics of each one, do I?”
“Yes, I’ve been drinking them a lot since I was a child.”
Amalia took the can and looked at the label to make sure it was a legitimate product. It seemed to be well preserved, and the tea leaves inside did not seem to be damp.
