- Chapter 5 - Myifle and the Power of the Maid
Someone said just a word, after which everyone was stunned, frozen despite the looming monster. They seem surprisingly nonchalant given the circumstances.
Ah, maybe they were actually prepared to annihilate the enemy? Upon reflection, it’s hard to believe that they wouldn’t be able to handle a Black Wolf, even after 300 years.
Indeed, a Black Wolf would have required an adventurer from the guild with at least a B-rank 300 years ago, but times have indeed changed.
Nowadays, one could probably easily defeat it with a superior magical device. Considering this, perhaps I’ve meddled unnecessarily.
Thinking about it calmly, using an old-fashioned carriage in this day and age is odd. But if it’s being used as bait for hunting monsters, that makes sense.
Their equipment is odd, too. Heavy armor, swords, and bows seem anachronistic in modern times.
Even in my light attire, my magical powers offer more protection than ancient orichalcum armor ever could.
“What should we do, Master?” Mei asked, having descended from the driver’s seat, seeking my direction.
As I turned my attention forward again, the Black Wolf had also stopped, resulting in a standoff.
This was to be expected. The vehicle I created includes a magic spell that repels monsters.
It usually prevents them from approaching within a 50-meter radius. Although it’s not as effective against stronger monsters or beasts, I could embed a spell that would keep even dragons at bay, but that would obscure the true danger of our surroundings.
Safety would be assured, but it would prevent us from gathering necessary information. Thus, I’ve set the spell to affect only moderately challenging opponents within a 50-meter radius.
This way, we can still spot the monsters from a distance where they are visible.
However, regarding the Black Wolf, and those behind it—it seems they are all humans of the Huma race.
They too remain still. It would be rude to interrupt if they were in the middle of a hunt, but there seems to be no point in just staring down the Black Wolf.
Well, we might as well handle this ourselves and see if there’s anything of use on this Black Wolf—though it’s unlikely there would be anything beneficial. If there is, we can simply hand it over to them.
With that thought, I pulled out my favorite weapon from the infinite storage ring.
“What’s that staff?” someone joked, clearly confused. Of course, this isn’t a staff.
It’s a Myifle magic rifle, cylindrical with a long barrel equipped with a scope, grip, and trigger.
This creation of mine features a spiraled magic engraving inside the barrel that smooths the flow of Myif magic through what I call the Myifle Ring Spiral Compression Magic Formula.
The name “Myifle” is derived from this Myifle Ring. It can fire either Damascus DK bullets or Hyral HR bullets.
When the trigger is pulled, the bullet’s magic is activated upon contact, causing an explosion. This propels the bullet straight and fast, spiraling through the barrel, and hitting the target with significant damage.
With DK bullets, it generally inflicts physical damage. However, HR bullets are designed to react with the magic ring inside the barrel, allowing various effects to be added to the bullet.
These bullets are all crafted by dwarves. Both are alloys with magic silver, but since iron is more plentiful, there are more DK bullets, which contain a higher proportion of iron.
HR bullets are tricky to make, and I need to personally adjust their magic formulas, making them a bit more labor-intensive to produce.
Well, as it stands, I have over a thousand DK bullets and a few hundred HR bullets, so we should be fine for a while.
Yes, but these bullets used to require manual loading after every shot. However, after some trial and error with Benz, we managed to attach a magazine later on, which made things much easier. This magazine can be attached to the Myifle with just one touch, making swapping them out simple.
The magazine can hold up to 12 bullets, which isn’t too many as having too many would make it too long and cumbersome.
“By the way, can we take down that Black Wolf ourselves?” I asked, making sure to consult the still-dazed humans behind us. I wouldn’t want them to complain later if I hadn’t checked with them first.
“Eh? Eh? You mean, you’re going to take it down?” “Well, technically, it would be Mei and me,” I clarified.
The one who asked was an elderly man dressed like a butler, with a rather dandy white-haired appearance.
“A child and that beautiful woman?” “But they don’t look like they’re dressed for battle, right?” “The child took out some weird staff, but the woman is a maid, right?” “Where did that staff even come from?”
They started saying various things, still calling my gun a staff.
“Um, perhaps I’m meddling unnecessarily? If you were here to hunt that, you would have had your way of doing it. Mei, it seems we’re a nuisance, so let’s leave,” I suggested. “Understood, Master,” Mei agreed. “Wait! Please wait a moment!”
Though I felt like chatting more, it seemed we weren’t welcome, so it might be better not to overstay our welcome. But the white-haired man stopped us.
“Um, we are indeed in trouble. That beast has injured many of our comrades, and we might be wiped out at this rate. So, if you could help—” He bowed his head as he pleaded.
Hmm, many comrades injured by that beast? Really? If so, that’s quite careless.
Maybe they underestimated the Black Wolf because it’s more active at night, and they thought it would be safe during this time.
Anyway, if that’s the case…
“Understood. Mei, change of plans again, but let’s quickly deal with that monster,” I decided. “Quickly?” The butler looked bewildered, but it wasn’t something so surprising.
“Here we go—”
“A beast on top of—”
A beast? What is he talking about? Anyway, I climbed on top of the car’s roof, and I had Mei advance to confront the beast.
“Alright, I’ll shoot five of them from here, Mei, you handle the rest,” I instructed. “Understood, Master.”
Thus began the hunt. DK bullets would be enough. I aimed the crosshair of the scope at the head of the Black Wolf.
The Black Wolf, still confused, didn’t approach the vehicle. The spell was working as evidence.
Then, I pulled the trigger. The bullet, unobstructed, spiraled inside the Myifle Ring, pushing forward toward the prey.
Thanks to the spiraling motion, the bullet cut through the air without resistance. The Myifle Ring also added an acceleration effect, pushing the bullet to speeds exceeding the speed of sound.
The bullet was conical with a pointed tip, another result of trial and error with Benz to minimize air resistance.
The DK bullets have a pointed tip for enhanced penetration, whereas HR bullets are more rounded due to the weaker structure of Hyral compared to Damascus.
So, turning them into piercing bullets wouldn’t make much sense. However, as magic bullets, they are easier to modify afterwards.
This allows magic effects and activation conditions to be incorporated into the bullets themselves. Thus, HR bullets prioritize the magical effects they trigger over the bullet’s own damage.
Conversely, against a magic-resistant opponent, DK bullets are more effective. They offer significantly higher physical damage.
For the Black Wolf, since it seemed vulnerable to both magic and physical attacks, I opted for DK bullets due to their abundance.
These DK bullets also have a mode that changes their magic formula, allowing for some enhancement and alteration of their shape through alchemy.
There are four types: one is the normal shape with a pointed tip; another transforms on impact like a hammerhead, losing penetration but increasing the impact damage significantly.
For large beasts or monsters, penetrating bullets often don’t cause enough damage. In such cases, this shape is more effective.
Another type releases spikes upon impact, staying inside the target and causing significant pain if it’s a living creature.
I’m not particularly fond of using these bullets on living creatures, but they can be useful in non-combat situations.
The last type breaks into a shotgun blast upon firing, spreading the attack area but reducing the power due to the smaller fragments.
So, with the ordinary piercing bullets, I easily made a hole between the Black Wolf’s eyes.
After my attack, the Black Wolf, now agitated, charged at us despite the repelling effect.
The vehicle’s spell doesn’t suppress a highly agitated enemy. But, honestly, it’s easier to aim when they charge at us.
“Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! And with this, the last one, hit! The rest is up to you!”
As the five approached, bullets from my Myifle pierced through them one after another. Some of them cast Dark Bolts, but unfortunately for them, they couldn’t reach me. The magic car always has a barrier deployed to block incoming spells, and it protected me on the roof too. All the black projectiles were nullified before reaching me.
Then, following my cue, Mei sprang into action.
In the meantime, I swapped the magazine for another one. However, it seems unlikely I’ll need to fire any more bullets.
As Mei approached, the Black Wolf attacked her with Dark Fangs and claws enhanced with darkness, but she easily caught the claw attack and slammed its head into the ground, shattering it like a cracked fruit.
The Dark Fangs did hit Mei, but she didn’t sustain even a scratch. Acknowledging this, the beast growled in frustration and leapt with its fangs bared, but Mei leapt too, elegantly yet powerfully kicking upwards, smashing her heel down onto its head.
The impact from her overflowing power traveled from the head to the tail, splitting the Dark Wolf in half, and even gouging the ground beneath.
…Well, it’s my own creation, but wow, such power!
Thus, the eight Black Wolves that had been pursuing them were annihilated within five minutes due to our intervention—
