“Ugh, let’s see.”
My head felt dazed.
It was like a thin film was covering my vision, and its outline was blurry.
I left my home and headed towards Haruyama-san’s home, which was next door.
After pressing the intercom, Mirai Haruyama, Mio’s mother, appeared. Looking at her appearance, my senses involuntarily woke up.
Her long brown hair was tied up and hung over her right shoulder. She wore a white T-shirt with a wide neckline and three-quarter-length denim.
It was hard to believe that her well-defined body style was of a lady who had already given birth to a child.
“Ah, Yuu-kun. Good morning.”
“Good morning”
“Even though it’s definitely hard from such early in the morning, I will be counting on you.”
“Yeah, well, it can’t be helped.”
“But, is Sayaka-san okay now?”
“Well, it still seems that mom still is quite unable to move quite a bit from her bed yet, but since I put father with her, she will probably be fine.”
“Hey, Yuu-nii”
Mio charged toward Mirai-san’s side.
“Woh, aren’t you quite lively from this early in the morning?”
“Yuu-nii looks like a zombie, though.”
“Hey~ Mio, bad! You shouldn’t say things like that to someone. I’m sorry, Isami-kun.”
“Nope, it’s fine.”
I return a refreshing smile.
“Always always… Really, thank you for taking care of this troublesome Mio.”
“Nah…… It’s really okay.”
I return a nervous wry smile.
“Is Yuu-nii going as well?”
“Yeah, since it seems that my mom has strained her waist all of a sudden.”
“Unn.”
“Then shall we get going then? To radio calisthenics.”
The time was past 6:00 am.
The morning sun shines on the majestic Mt. Fuji, towering just in front of us, illuminating the lush green surface of the mountain.
Even though it was summer, the air was cold and chilly early in the morning.
Eventually, we arrived at our destination, the park.
“No one has come yet.”
In our district, we take turns conducting morning radio calisthenics during the summer vacation.
Today was the day when the Arizuki and Haruyama households were in charge.
Initially, my mother was supposed to be there, but as she sprained her back while cleaning the store after closing last night, I ended up being the pinch hitter.
“Put the boombox on the bench.”
“Hey, hey, why did you bring a ball too?”
Mio asks. I had a basketball with me.
“I thought I’d play a little after the radio calisthenics was over.”
A basketball net was installed in this park.
It’s been a while since I retired, but it seems that I’ve been missing that feeling of throwing the ball in the net.
“Is it because you lost the very first match itself; that you are now planning to practice a lot?”
“No damnit, I’m already retired.”
“I will also play along with you.”
When Mio said so, Mirai-san immediately intervened.
“Mio, you won’t go out to play until after you’ve done your homework. After the radio calisthenics is over, we are immediately heading home!”
“ehh.”
While we were making such conversations, the children gathered up slowly. Compared to the lively and enthusiastic lower grades, the upper grades looked really tired and exhausted.
“Mahiru, Asaka; Yuuni is here today.”
“Seriously?”
“eh?”
Mio brought the two of them to greet me.
“A~h so true, Yuu-nii~.”
“Yuu-san”
“Yo~.”
It’s heartwarming to see him hanging a stamp card from his neck.
“Why is Yuu-nii here?”
Mahiru and Asaka grab my hands and swing them up-down.
“In place of my Mom.”
“Are you coming tomorrow as well?”
“No, it’s just for today, a temporary shift.”
On saying that, Asuka blatantly frowned her face.
“Even though it’s, at last, the summer vacation, I can’t just waste my time getting up so early to do this every day.”
“A~h, Isami-kun. It’s about time…”
Looking at the clock in the park, it was about 6:30.
“Ah, yes. Coming right up, hey you guys, get in positions, shoo~ shoo~.”
The children spread out at regular intervals.
And so, when Mirai-san hit the radio-cassette switch, nostalgic music began to play.
2
“Get in two lines, yes like that.”
The children form a line in front of Mirai-san and me to get stamps.
“Yuu-nii, today I have some business to attend to, so I can’t come to play. See you tomorrow.”
“Me too.”
Mahiru and Asaka reluctantly received the stamps and left.
“Mio, Yuu-nii, bye-bye”
“Mio-chan, Yuu-san, bye-bye”
“Bye-bye”
“ou~”
Mio will stay until the end to go home with Mirai.
“I know you, Onii-san. You’re from <Moon Night Terrace>, aren’t you~.”
“A~h, I’ve seen him as well.”
“Even I thought I’d seen him somewhere before.”
Girls, seemingly in higher grades, among the rest, suddenly get together around me.
“Onii-san, are you in high school?”
“That’s right.”
“Eh, such an adult.”
“His hands are also so big.”
Suddenly, one of them grabbed my palm and held it to compare it with hers.
“Hey!!”
“Look, Nanako, Onii-san’s hands are so much bigger than a junior high school student’s.”
“A~h so true. It’s also so rough.”
“Hey, hey, if you make a crowd here, the people standing behind will get stuck. If you have already got your stamp, move to the sides.”
“Yes~”
“Yes~ yes~”
Eventually, Mio’s turn arrives.
“Here, I’ve got to put a stamp on your card as well now.”
Mio silently hands over her card.
What happened to her?
Somehow she feels in a bad mood.
“Hey, what’s wrong, Mio? Does your stomach hurt?”
“Not particularly.”
After receiving the card, Mio took my ball and
“Let’s play quickly.”
“Wait there, Mio. After you complete your summer vacation homework.”
Mirai-san approaches this way.
“Isn’t it okay? It will only be for a little while.”
“No. We’re going home right after this.”
“Just a little bit.”
“No.”
“Muu!, Yuu-nii, please wait for me.”
Seeing that it was no use trying to argue with her, Mio starts running alone towards home.
“Then, I’ll pass the boombox and stamps to the next households on duty. Isami-kun, thank you for your hard work today.”
“Thank you for your hard work as well.”
“Please rely on my greeting to Sayaka-san as well.”
Saying that Mirai-san starts chasing after her daughter.
Well then, I’ll go on my way to play basketball as planned.
Thanks to radio calisthenics, warm-up exercises were probably not necessary anymore.
A~h, this feeling of hitting the ball and having it bounce back.
Such a good feeling.
I approach the goal while dribbling and make a layup shot.
The sound of the net shaking on contact echoes in the morning silence.
“Nn?”
After 7 o’clock, I noticed three elementary school girls looking at me from a little distance away.
They were kids who were a little older than Mio and her group ― I think those would be somewhere around third or fourth grade.
One of them had a basketball with them.
Ahh, now I understand.
There was only one basketball net in this park. Probably because of me these kids weren’t able to play basketball because of my presence.
It’s too scary for a child to ask an adult to give way… I guess it can’t be helped. I shall let them have it.
I go on to pick up my ball and move away from the court.
When I called out to them, saying, “You can use it,” I received a rather unexpected response.
“Umm, why don’t we play together?”
*
“Uoooo, Yuu-nii”
Mio was running with all her might.
Is Yuu-nii waiting for me properly?
The time was just before 8:00 am.
I did my best to finish my homework. Incidentally, I did a little of the work meant for tomorrow. So that there were no complaints in any way.
“Uughee”
As I was sprinting my way, I started feeling sick. It was Mio, who had just eaten her breakfast.
I started to walk my way to the park instead.
Dum, dam,
Such voices of the ball hitting the ground could still be heard.
He is still here, nice nice.
“Hey, Yu—u-ni–i…”
As Mio entered the ground through the entrance, what caught her eye was Aritsuki playing basketball with several girls she didn’t know.
3
“Huh? Why are you back already? What about Isami-kun?”
“Do not know him.”
“What happened? Did you have a fight?”
“Not really.”
I manage to dodge my mother’s onslaught of questions and jump into my room.
I lie on my bed and stare at the ceiling.
“…”
It felt strange.
It felt like an unfamiliar old man came into her room with shoes on. That sort of feeling. Moreover, in addition, as if there’s a volcano inside her body that was about to erupt…
“Dimwit.”
Seeing Arizuki getting along well with other children, especially girls, made my heart swell. Even though when Aritsuki plays with Mahiru and Asaka, I don’t feel anything like this.
What even was this?
Come to think of it, when I lined up to get the stamp, I had the same feeling when the other older girls surrounded Aritsuki.
It’s slightly different from just being sad.
It looks like anger, but still somewhat a little different.
The young Mio didn’t have enough life experience to understand the feeling of jealousy.
“A desire for monopoly” might be another way of saying that.
A desire to monopolize, “I want you to be the Yuu-nii only for us.”
Just too vicious, selfish, and wanting to tease…
I realized a different side of myself, at the age of seven, in the season of the sun.
[TL notes summer season. Just wrote it like this~.]
Tears that ran down her cheeks were saltier than usual.
