“Somehow, I feel bored.”
Mio muttered emptily.
I was leaning back on my study desk chair. The bed is occupied by three smitten. Mio, Mahiru, and Asaka were lying on the bed like a stagnant lake, looking exhausted and bored.
“Isn’t there something interesting, Yuu-nii?”
Mahiru wipes the sweat from her forehead and says.
“It’s hot today as well, isn’t it?”
Asaka flapped the hand fan towards her continuously.
Isn’t it hot because the three of us are so close together? I retorted in her mind.
“Do you want to play games?”
I pull out the Game XX cube from my collection. If it is about having software games with four-playing options, I have quite plenty with me.
“Hmm, it’s kind of, you see, …it’s not that kind of feeling yet.”
“What kind of feeling are you having?”
Mio turned to me and said,
“Something that can make your heart race.”
“Haaah?”
“… Yes, it’s just how Mio puts it.”
“It’s hot.”
Your order is a way to oblate.
And what do you even mean by having your heart race?
Are you all already dating someone and now are in a period of experiencing boredom!
Well, I’ve never had a girlfriend, so I don’t really know how it works.
“Geez”
It’s especially hot today.
And the kids seem especially exhausted due to the hot summer.
It was a cloudless sunny day, and the sun had also finally started showing its full potential. The outside temperature was well over 30 degrees, as many heat stroke warnings were being issued during the day.
There’s only a fan in this room, so on days like this, these guys should just go and play in their own air-conditioned house, damnit.
“Hey, you guys should drink barley tea. You should keep yourselves hydrated as much as possible.”
“Hey”
“Yes, yes”
“Yes”
Three little runts get out of bed, staggering like zombies, and move forward.
“…!”
When I saw them like that, it finally clicked within me.
That’s it!
“Okay then, wait here.”
I leave the room and head to my father’s study.
“Ku~Ku~Ku”
My father is a movie fanatic and has a massive collection of movie DVDs, both Japanese and Western.
I set my sights on the horror collection.
The titles are lined up with scary fonts and drawings.
You want your hearts to race, don’t you?
Okay then~.
Allow me to scare you until your bones and make your heart race.
It also turned out that these guys were as well possessed by the feeling of fear, as I saw in the case of that empty house/mansion exploration.
I always felt that I was the only one who had been the victim every time. Let’s have these brats experience some painful memories once in a while.
If it’s a horror movie, you can expect a fantastic evening also, right?
It’s like killing two birds with a single stone, isn’t it?
“… fufufu, fuhahahaha, hahahahaha”

A woman is seen walking on the screen.
The woman is a detective, and she was looking into this abandoned house for a specific investigation. This vacant house was the site that experienced a gruesome murder several years ago, and the woman detective was visiting this place to finally solve the mystery revolving around the case.
Ever since she set foot in that empty house, she had always sensed someone’s presence going alongside her.
It was not just one or two.
There were faint sounds of footsteps that were heard, like the rustling of clothes.
That too from various directions.
Does someone live or make this house their hiding spot?
However, no one was found even after searching inside the house thoroughly.
The BGM gradually transforms and sounds into something eerie and weird.
The camera work also begins to move disturbingly.
Then when the BGM sounds disappear and the woman turns around. There was—-
Nobody was there.
『What the heck. Surprising me like that…』
She breathes a sigh of relief and returns her gaze forwards.
And right there was a boy without eyeballs standing there.
“Hieeeeeeeeee!!!”
“Yuu-ni, you’re too noisy.”
Mio slaps me on the back.
“Yu, Yuu-nii. You sound way too scared.”
Mahiru says that while clinging to my back as much as possible.
“A–aren’t you guys scared just that much as well? What are you guys trying to get at by hiding behind my back here?”
Mio and Mahiru hid behind me and watched the TV from right over my shoulders.
As for Asaka, she had her face completely attached to my chest and didn’t let go at all.
“We are not scared. When we watch TV, we just tend to watch it while standing back. Right, Mio.”
“As Mahiru Says”
“Nonsense.”
This is dangerous.
This is pretty dangerous.
A production that pursues pure fear rather than surprise or shock, this was somewhat unique when you consider the frequent Japanese horror.
The ghosts that are the centerpiece of the horror story don’t appear suddenly but rather have their presence felt at first.
Produce a sense of realism where you don’t know when the ghost will come, and then suddenly make them appear in the scene, telling the audience that it’s here, like the scene currently playing.
The fear gets doubled up, just like when building up a tower in Jenga. After it gets piled up on each other, they could collapse all at once.
It’s a common technique of horror. But nevertheless, it is scary.
Or rather, it’s just too scary.
I like watching detective movies. I was even quite proud of myself when being relatively resilient to such things, but this was just plain scary.
I want to turn off the TV right now.
Even these guys seem to be pretty scared.
If I ask them, ‘Let’s stop watching already,’ they will also probably agree.
B–But, since I brought this movie up by myself, it’s impossible to bring that up by myself.
Since if I were to do that, I would lose.
“Yuu-san”
Asaka brings her teary-eyed face closer and hugs me.
“Asaka, come here.”
Mio beckons.
“Mio-chan”
“hurry, hurry”
“Ah, TF.”
Even Asaka moves behind me.
YOU IDIOT!
If you all do that, wouldn’t I end up right at the front!?
Starting with the appearance of the boy’s ghost, other ghosts—–all with no eyeballs or empty black eyes—- start attacking the woman.
“Uh-oh-oh-oh-oh”
I screamed out loud, terrified with fear.

“I — I need to go to the bathroom.”
Mio stands up.
“Yu, Yuu-nii, …come too?”
“ah?”
What happened? Have you become afraid to go alone?
It can’t be helped. For the sake of my cute little sisters, I shall follow you along.
“Are you trying to run away from this! Both of you!”
Mahiru shouts.
“N-N-n-N–No! It’s not something like that.”
“I — I’ll make the movie pause for the time being.”
Asaka picked up the remote control.
Hmm, she’s pretty tough, isn’t she?
Well, that’s fine.
For the time being, if I can have a momentary escape right here and, thus, be able to reset my mood. With this, I will have the energy recovered enough to watch the rest considerably.
I wait in front of the restroom.
My heart was still pounding hard.
My objective was to make their hearts race if I was the one who had his heart race in the end. I definitely have my priorities mixed up.
“Hey, Mio, not done yet?”
“A minute more.”
I look at my father’s study.
I regretted not having chosen a movie that was a little scarier than this one.
“Coming in.”
A child’s voice was heard from downstairs.
Nnn?
Wasn’t this voice just now Mio’s?
That girl, just when did she leave the bathroom.
Wait, … she said coming in???
Mio peeks out from under the stairs.
“Yo~, Yuu-nii.”
“Huh? Eh? When did you … Weren’t you just now?”
“Hmm? What happened?”
“Excuse me”
“Excuse me”
The voices of the other two also came succeedingly.
They were Mahiru and Asaka.
Following Mio in the lead, the two also continued on their way straight up the stairs.
“Yuu-ni, why are you standing right up there?”
“Eh? No, wait … why are you guys in the first flo—…”
“First flo?”
Asaka made a questioning face.
“What are you talking about? Strange courage”
The three of them went straight into my room naturally like that.
What are these guys? Are they trying to play a prank to freak me out?
Did they get off the balcony?
No, but that’s already quite tall, and most of all, they can’t climb over the fence with their height and arm strength.
I turn towards the toilet.
The door still remained closed.
I swallow my dry saliva.
The hallway was dead silent.
A silence, almost painful.
When I put my hand on the knob and rotated it, it was still locked.
“Is there someone —inside?”
“Yuu-nii?”
The voice that came from inside was indeed that of Mio’s.
“Mi — Mio?”
“Are you still —here?”
A chill runs down my spine.
“I’m coming out just now.”
I can hear the sound of paper rolling up, and the toilet flushed.
A click and the sound of the lock opening.
*Gee.
The door opens up.
And right there was —
3
“Uwaaaaaaa—-eh?”
What I saw in front of me was a familiar ceiling with these three scumbags peering at me.
“Ah, he woke up.”
“Yuu–ni, you’re getting way too easily scared there, aren’t you?”
“This is the first time I’ve seen someone passing out watching a horror movie.”
When I got up, I was on my own bed.
The movie from earlier was still in the paused state as shown on the TV.
“Hahahaa…, A DR—DREAM?”
You’re entirely drenched in sweat, though.
Asaka wipes my face with a towel.
“Ah, thank you.”
“Ahahahaha, pipsqueak, small fry,” says Mio.
“You’re really weak-hearted, aren’t you, Yuu-ni.”
Mahiru turned her eyes towards me as if she was looking at something pitiful.
“Ku!”
“When a lot of ghosts came out suddenly in a scene, you screamed out loud and passed out.”
So it was right there, huh. Certainly, I still have memories intact of that moment.
What a blunder…
However,
“I’m glad it was just a dream.”
I breathed a sigh of relief and then went on to press the stop button on the remote control.
