- Chapter 174 - Messenger Lord Biggus
Ah, what to do.
Lady Pretihya, the faithful knight of Her Highness Valiere, seems a bit troubled.
As the journey continues, the brigade has swelled in size, and even Lady Sabine, formidable as she is, cannot possibly control the entire brigade alone.
Thus, as I’ve often said, it is only natural that Lady Pretihya, a loyal knight to Her Highness Valiere, should assist in her duties.
Specifically, my role involves speaking with those who wish to join the brigade, such as mercenary groups and Black Knights, to ascertain what sort of people they are.
Well, I was once the captain of a mercenary band myself, leading more than a hundred worthless mercenaries, and I’m used to dealing with rough characters.
In fact, I’ve been employed by feudal lords and commanded their forces.
I’m confident in my negotiation skills, but I’m a bit troubled by the current situation.
“I am a messenger from Lady Anastasia, sister of Her Highness Valiere. I seek an audience with Her Highness.”
A knight with her hair tied back like a horse’s tail spoke up.
There’s no doubt about her being a knight.
She clearly exudes the aura of an intellectual knightly class, and it seemed she held a higher status than myself.
“Ah, indeed. If the letter is out of concern for Her Highness, she would be pleased. I would like to arrange it immediately, but…”
Ah, how to describe these women who claim to be messengers from Lady Anastasia?
They have no servants, except for one knight who is accompanied by a child.
Even the child looks to be from a wealthy class, which is puzzling.
They are undoubtedly knights, but since this Pretihya is a newcomer, I cannot tell if they are knights from Anhalt.
Lady Sabine is extremely cautious of assassination, warning to disrupt any audience with Her Highness, no matter how noble or holy the visitor might be.
However, since it is a message from Her Highness’s sister, I cannot refuse an audience, and it seems I should consult Lady Sabine for her judgment.
But perhaps it was too soon to rely on Lady Sabine’s decision.
I don’t want to be seen as someone who can’t make decisions on their own.
I need to observe them a bit more.
Start by guessing their origins from their appearance and gather information.
The group consists of eight individuals.
The first is a large knight with a morning star, likely from a western maritime nation, giving off a vibe of a womanizer.
The second, seemingly of Eastern descent, had her black hair tied in a white bundle, giving off a somewhat foolish aura.
The third, his face covered in scars but maintaining a smile like a sunflower, was a knight bearing the emblem of the Cologne Knight Monastery on his plate mail. Probably a bit off his rocker since he’s from the Cologne Sect.
The fourth, also of Eastern descent, had sharp eyes like a wolf, likely born of a nomadic tribe. He was nibbling on an apple, likely bought from a merchant near our encampment who had two donkeys.
The fifth had a somewhat gloomy face but was bizarrely striking a pose as if praising the sun. Perhaps his mind was a bit twisted.
The sixth was the intellectual and nervous knight I had been speaking with. Probably stressed out by her colorful colleagues.
Looking over them, I couldn’t help but think, “What a strange bunch,” but the strangest was the largest knight.
He appeared to be the leader, a giant over 2 meters tall, imposing a strong presence.
He was a fully armored knight with the old-fashioned design of a bucket-like great helm.
He was accompanied by a bright-looking squire, who seemed intent on not speaking himself.
After observing all eight messengers, including the squire, I came to one conclusion.
They were suspicious, the most suspicious group I’ve ever encountered in my life.
Can they truly be trusted as official messengers?
No, they aren’t thieves, but it’s dubious whether they are truly messengers from Lady Anastasia.
“Excuse me. As a newly appointed knight of Anhalt, I am unfamiliar with you. If you truly are messengers, do you have any proof?”
Upon hearing my words, the leader in the great helm nodded.
The squire understood and brought forward a sealed letter hanging from his belt.
“This is a letter sealed with the wax only used by the royal family of the Kingdom of Anhalt.”
Even I, who am not a herald, recognized the kingdom’s emblem, indeed the same as that used by the beautiful Her Highness Valiere.
However, simply seeing this seal isn’t enough to trust them; I must show it to Lady Sabine, let Her Highness Valiere open the letter herself, and confirm whether to grant an audience.
It’s hard to trust putting these messengers together with Her Highness.
“I’m truly sorry, but you will need to wait in the encampment. Please understand.”
The great helm nodded again.
You could say something, I thought.
As if he wouldn’t deign to converse with a mere newcomer like me.
It was infuriating, but as a knight with subordinates of my own, I could no longer live as I pleased.
Such anger needed to be quelled within.
“I will inform Lady Sabine immediately. Ah, may I have the name of the messenger, please?”
Despite their apparent reluctance to speak, I needed at least a name.
It didn’t matter who answered.
Ignoring the leader, I turned my gaze to the other seven, but—oddly, they all blatantly averted their eyes, exuding an aura of unwillingness to speak.
Only the squire, who met my gaze with a slight frown, responded.
“Lord Biggus.”
“…”
Had my ears deceived me?
It sounded like a strange phrase.
To my knowledge, ‘Biggus’ meant something like ‘big dick.’
“Excuse me, could you repeat that? I must have misheard.”
I couldn’t believe there was a knight with such a distasteful name in existence.
Thinking so, I asked again.
“No, Lord Pretihya, your hearing is fine. ‘Lord Biggus’ is indeed the name of our lead envoy.”
The squire answered earnestly.
Even if the messenger’s name was truly that, I wanted to recommend a name change immediately.
No, saying that might be considered an insult.
Such a thing would be problematic for a newcomer like me to say.
After all, I must continue to live as a loyal knight to Her Highness Valiere.
I desperately wanted to make a remark, but I had to let it go.
“Understood. I will certainly relay that a messenger from Lady Anastasia has arrived.”
All I could do was fulfill my duty.
For now, I would ask Lady Sabine, just to be sure, if all knights from the Kingdom of Anhalt were such oddities.
That seemed permissible enough.
I promptly left my seat and reported everything to Lady Sabine, but her response was unforgiving.
“There is no Lord Biggus in the Kingdom of Anhalt. No, the seal is genuine, and I do believe it’s a letter from ‘Cannibal Anastasia.’ I’ll report it to Her Highness Valiere, so keep them waiting for now. Entertain them until then.”
The answer was merciless.
So what was that guy all about?
What kind of man would remove that great helm and claim the name Biggus?
As I suppressed my irritation toward him, who wouldn’t even converse with me, I became terribly curious about his existence.
