- Chapter 2 part 4: Weirdly familiar scenery and my first night in another world

With the complex completely secured, I settled on rummaging through the surviving documents scattered around the complex that I had rounded up.
“Now this is interesting,” a murmur escaped from my lips, “if these papers are true… then the whole abandonment occurred just after the sentencing huh. And that’s if I’m truly back to [Evrylandia], then what drove them to abandon?”
Thanks to the pile of parchments sitting on my lap, I found myself lost in the swamp of the unknown. Questions that had no clear answers kept on haunting me even though I had left this land for over 200 years. Before I realized it, a groundswell of dark emotions boiled in my heart, unable to let go of the past grudges. I inadvertently clenched my fist as if readying to deliver a punch into the faces of those figures before I slowly relaxed my posture.
“This ain’t lead to anywhere,” a rueful sigh escaped from my mouth, “better hope that there’s still a bastion of civilization elsewhere. Even then, maybe tomorrow I’ll take a look at the town hall and the [Guild]’s building to see if anything remotely useful comes up. Speaking of which… I wonder if that bastard is still kicking, huh? Maybe it’s a good idea to settle the score.”
After setting the itinerary for the next day, I looked at the pile of rounded gems sitting nearby. Those rounded gems, sporting a solid and fresh obsidian color, reflected the dying sunlight nicely, which I would bet that an average Earthling be drooling over. I couldn’t help blurting out a satisfied giggle at the fruit of hard-earned labor as I reached out for the largest precious stone.
“I wonder how much this bad boy would fetch, huh? Ah, imagine the surprised face of the [Guild]’s officials when they learn where this one comes from…”
After I finished inspecting the spoils, once again I opened the cybernetic arm to reveal the rod, and this time I unplugged the rod from the base. Gently placing it on the pile of gemstones harvested from the [Goblyns], I searched my pouches for a couple of transmuting talismans.
“Now then, let’s get this started. Ugh, how long do I have to keep on fucking doing this? If I don’t get to the civilization soon I’d be fucking neck deep in trouble.”
As I prepared the chanting, further bemoaning about the dwindling amount of available talismans was aired. The pile of gems started to glow brightly, forcing me to avert my eyes for a brief moment while I maintained the chanting. As the bright light subsided, what remained was an obsidian-colored rod, free from the discoloration it was inflicted with moments ago.
Satisfied with the result of the ritual, I accessed the network despite being still early in the day. Knowing what to search for, I swiftly filtered through all the relevant reports over the past 24 hours while sending hope to my comrades.

“Phew, so it means that my zoning talismans managed to contain the blast from that damned [Sanchez’s Gate],” I heaved a sigh of relief at the good news before groaning at the potential fallout, “then again it will become a major headache once everyone wakes up. Let’s see if this irregularity gets noticed. At least tonight I don’t have to go to sleep on an empty stomach.”
With my back softly leaning against one of the intact glass lenses of the lantern room, I leisurely roasted a rat that I happened to catch when I was setting up the perimeter. Glancing at the charging [Burevestnik], yet another rueful sigh was heaved from my lips, prompting me to moisten them with a sip from the flask. For now, my source of entertainment while basking in the warm bonfire was listening to the lullaby of softly crashing waves and gently whistling wind. The occasional chilling breeze that slipped through the cracks in the lens salted the skewer, which greatly whetted my appetite.
After enjoying the rat skewer, I opted to end the day early. After all, from tomorrow onward there would be little chance for me to find such a convenient shelter like this. There were many questions that their answers could only be found if I worked my arse off, yet I decided to surf the net for the last time. Don’t worry, I have enough self-control to quit early, so you folks should head to bed first.
