Chapter 44: Fake Illness
“As usual, no dinner was made for Ayuka…”
I slipped out during dinner and locked myself in the bathroom.
Like always, no dinner was prepared for Ayuka today, and she’s supposedly eating out with friends.
But, as I’ve been thinking for a while, is Ayuka really eating out with friends?
Ayuka isn’t exactly the sociable type who makes lots of friends.
Sure, I bet plenty of guys approach her for her looks, but I haven’t heard any rumors about her hanging out with anyone specific.
“It’s about time I found out the truth.”
To uncover the truth, I have no choice but to follow Ayuka.
Luckily, dinner just started less than a minute ago, so Ayuka should still be nearby.
“Now, how do I convince Rinka?”
If I told Rinka face-to-face that I’m going to follow Ayuka, I might actually get locked up this time.
It’s better to come up with an excuse and make it seem like I can’t eat dinner.
I hurried back to the living room.
“You going to the bathroom during dinner? That’s rare. Is your stomach acting up today?”
Rinka asked me in her cool voice.
“Y-Yeah, my stomach’s not feeling great today.”
I rubbed my stomach, trying to act the part.
“S-Sorry, but I don’t think I can eat dinner today.”
I put on a pained expression.
“What!? Is your stomach that bad!?”
Rinka jumped up in a panic and headed toward the hallway.
“Wait, wait, what are you doing?”
“Obviously, I’m calling an ambulance. If your stomach’s so bad you can’t eat dinner, there’s nothing I can do.”
Whoa, whoa.
If she calls an ambulance, I won’t be able to follow Ayuka.
“N-No, it’s fine! It’s not that serious.”
“Don’t be stubborn. What if you end up with some bad aftereffects later, you idiot!!”
Oh no.
She’s seriously going to call an ambulance.
Alright, time to use my tears.
“Rinka-nee!!”
As I looked for eye drops in the kitchen, Fuzuha stood up even more dramatically than Rinka did.
“I don’t think big brother’s condition is bad enough for an ambulance. But from how he looks, he probably can’t eat.”
W-What’s with you all of a sudden, Fuzuha?
“…So, what should we do?”
Rinka sounded overwhelmed by Fuzuha’s confident words.
“For now, I think big brother should rest in his room. And don’t wake him up.”
Fuzuha came closer to me.
“Come on, big brother, can you walk? I’ll take you to your room.”
I leaned on Fuzuha’s shoulder, pretending I could barely move, taking advantage of her overly thoughtful words.
“…Alright. I’ll follow your judgment. But if anything happens to Kiyoto, you’re taking responsibility. Got it?”
What’s with that yakuza-like tone?
“Yeah, I got it.”
Unlike me, who was so scared I could wet myself, Fuzuha faced Rinka confidently and declared without hesitation.
“Fine then. Go. Kiyoto, rest well.”
Fuzuha and I left the living room and headed up the stairs.
Or so I thought.
“Come on, hurry and follow Ayuka-nee.”
We passed the stairs and reached the front door.
“You knew from the start…”
“Yeah. A kind big brother like you wouldn’t just leave Ayuka-nee in her current state.”
K-Kind…//
Well, I’m aware of that.
“When you ran to the bathroom right after dinner started, I had a gut feeling you’d act today. And when you said your stomach wasn’t feeling good, I figured out your plan.”
This girl’s smart.
Is it true that kids who are good at games are naturally sharp?
I didn’t believe that at first since it came from some clickbait YouTuber.
As she explained, Fuzuha put her hand on the bathroom door’s knob.
“Come on, big brother, quietly open the front door.”
I did as Fuzuha said and turned the front door key softly.
“Listen, no matter how quietly you open the door, Rinka-nee will hear it. So, open it at the exact moment I swing the bathroom door open.”
She thought that far ahead?
While I was shocked by Fuzuha’s quick thinking, she started counting down with her fingers.
The moment her hand reached one, Fuzuha and I opened the front door and the bathroom door at the same time.
At that moment, I felt my bond with Fuzuha grow stronger.

Chapter 45: The Pride of a Lone Wolf Sister
“She’s probably around here somewhere.”
After sneaking out of the house, I headed toward the station.
There are some restaurants near our house, but none are places where a middle school girl would eat alone at night, so I went toward the station where the trendy shops are.
“Where is she…?”
Since I could see inside the shops through the windows, I squinted carefully to scan each one.
I might end up getting questioned by the police at this rate.
“Hm, is that…?”
Among the shops, I spotted a blonde girl in slightly dark purple, light clothing sitting alone inside a flashy café.
“…Ayuka, right…//”
My face turned a bit red because her light clothing made her just-right-sized chest stand out.
It’s not exactly big, but compared to Rinka, it’s decent.
I mean, with that size, she shouldn’t be teasing Rinka about being flat-chested.
And yeah, she’s definitely alone.
“Looking like that, isn’t she gonna get hit on by guys?”
Worried about that, I went inside the café.
“Thank you for coming. Are you alone?”
The waitress spoke to me, and I started stammering.
“Huh? Big brother?”
Maybe she noticed my (self-proclaimed) cool voice, because Ayuka, sitting nearby, spotted me.
“Why are you here? What about dinner?”
“Well… I thought I’d eat with you today.”
“…What’s that supposed to mean?”
Relieved she didn’t reject me, I sat at her table.
“…By the way, where are your friends?”
“…Are you trying to make me mad? I’m eating alone, so you must’ve already guessed.”
Ayuka glared at me.
…Her glare feels completely different from Rinka’s, with its own kind of intensity.
Maybe it’s because her eyes are always sharp, but when she glares, I can’t help but want to look away.
But to me, those eyes are a reward!!!
“Order something.”
In front of Ayuka were some pieces of bread and coffee.
“Is that bread all-you-can-eat?”
“Yeah. You order once, and then it’s all-you-can-eat.”
Hearing that, I quickly pressed the button and ordered from the waitress.
“This place has a lot of bread types.”
I grabbed some bread and returned to Ayuka’s table.
“…So, why did you follow me today?”
“…In one word, I was worried.”
“…Worried?”
I nodded and continued.
“I’m gonna be blunt, but you don’t have many friends, do you, Ayuka?”
“…Not as few as you.”
She glared but didn’t deny it.
She said not as few as me, but honestly, it’s probably a close call.
“It’s weird that someone like you, who always says they’re eating out with friends, would do that. I’ve been thinking for a while that you might actually be eating alone at some restaurant.”
“…”
Her silence confirmed it wasn’t just today—she hasn’t been eating with friends at all.
“If you’re eating alone, doesn’t that feel lonely?”
“Lonely?”
Ayuka snorted, as if mocking me.
“Lonely? No way. Sure, like you said, I don’t have a single person at school I’d call a friend, and sometimes people even avoid me.”
Not a single one?
Then I might actually have more friends than her…
“But so what? I don’t want friends. I don’t feel lonely being alone.”
It doesn’t seem like just bravado.
She probably means it.
“I get not needing friends. Honestly, I think I’d be fine without anyone to call a friend.”
That’s a lie. I’m super lonely.
“But what about family? Right now, Rinka completely treats you like a stranger. You’re okay with that? It doesn’t feel lonely?”
“…Can you not talk about that girl?”
Ayuka’s glare turned into something that felt like it could curse me to death.
Oh no, this is the real deal.
“O-Okay, I get it. You don’t feel lonely about Rinka ignoring you. I understand, so please stop with those eyes!”
“…If you mention that girl again, I won’t hold back.”
With that, her glare finally softened back to normal.
“But then why lie to Fuzuha about eating with friends? Just say you’re eating alone.”
“I’m not like you, throwing away all my pride.”
Hey, I have pride too!
I’m proud of my masochistic heart.
“If I told Fuzuha I’m eating out alone, she’d tell you, right? That’s… kind of embarrassing.”
…This girl has pride in the weirdest places.

At this point i would say Yuzuha FTW, bruh.
Her camaraderie are + points for me.
