Chapter 22: Invitation to a Date
“…Ugh, this long text is so hard to read.”
It’s Saturday.
On past weekends, I’d lazily surf the net or play games, but as an exam student, that’s not an option.
I’m working on a long English text from the tutoring center.
“They’re throwing in words I’ve never seen. What’s the point of English for the future anyway?”
Probably what most exam students think.
“English is useless unless you leave Japan.”
Some guys, overdosed on doujinshi, dream of dating a blonde Western beauty, so they need English.
“Japanese women are pretty high-level too.”
I read on a site that Japanese women are highly rated overseas.
The girls around me are pretty gorgeous too.
“Hm?”
As I ranted about English being useless, my phone rang.
I didn’t need to check. It’s Kirino-san.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Kiyoto-kun? Sorry for calling you out of the blue on a Saturday.”
“No, I was totally free.”
“Free, huh… Wanna go out somewhere together today? The test is coming up, so we could study too.”
“Sure, sure!”
I answered before she finished.
This text? Kirino-san will make it easy.
“How about meeting at Saijo-To Station in thirty minutes, at eleven?”
Saijo-To Station is the closest station for both of us.
“Yup, Saijo-To Station.”
“Okay, I’ll wait.”
After the call with Kirino-san, I packed quickly.
I should get her to help me study, not just hang out.
“Japanese classics, world history, English.”
I stuffed the workbooks into my bag and headed downstairs.
No breakfast is made on weekends.
So, I haven’t seen my sisters yet.
I went down to the first-floor hallway, not to the living room, but straight to the entrance.
My sisters have been acting more and more like gal game heroines lately.
“Oh, Kiyoto, where are you going?”
As soon as I reached the hallway, the living room door opened, and Rinka came out.
…How did she know? I didn’t make a sound.
“Uh, I’ve got some stuff to do… Oh, I’ll probably eat dinner out.”
Crap.
Eating out is one of the things Rinka hates most.
I should’ve told her through a message…
“Alright. Be careful out there.”
“Sorry, I mean, dinner… huh?”
Rinka didn’t say anything about eating out?
She’s telling me to be careful instead?
“What’s up?”
“N-No, I just didn’t expect you to be okay with me eating out.”
“Hey, I’m not so clingy that I’d stop my real brother from eating out.”
She looked at me, a bit annoyed.
“This is your last summer in high school. You’re probably hanging out with friends, right? Enjoy it.”
What’s this? It feels like an old person lecturing me on how to live while I’m young.
Just so you know, I’m two years younger than you!
“But that’s assuming… your friend isn’t that annoying Kirino girl…”
“Gulp.”
Oops, I made a sound effect out loud.
Rinka’s cold, whip-mode eyes pierced through me.
“N-No, Kirino-san’s busy studying, so she doesn’t have time for me.”
“……”
Rinka’s expression didn’t change.
Did she see my cold sweat?
“Then it’s fine. Have fun.”
Good, she seems convinced.
Now she’ll go back to the living room, and I can head out—
“……”
Huh? Rinka’s not going back.
She’s still staring at me.
Under the pressure of her gaze, I awkwardly put on my shoes and opened the front door.
“……”
I didn’t look back, but I still felt her eyes.
It stopped when the door closed behind me.
“…No way she knows, right?”
Telling myself that, I hurried to the station.

Chapter 23: Unknown Girl
“Kirino-san.”
“Hm? What’s up, Kiyoto-kun?”
“Uh… sorry about yesterday. I quit the game without warning.”
Meeting Kirino-san at the station, I first apologized for yesterday.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Your sister Fuzuha probably pulled the game cord, right?”
As expected, Kirino-san saw right through it.
“It’s okay, I’m not mad at you at all, Kiyoto-kun. It’s my fault for inviting you to play so late.”
Such a saint, Kirino-san!
Even when the game got cut off, she doesn’t care!
“By the way, Kirino-san, where are we going today?”
“I was thinking… Joto Station!”
Joto Station is in the heart of Joto City.
With entertainment spots and libraries, it’s called a student town.
“Wanna study together at the big library at Joto Station?”
“Of course!”
With that settled, we passed the gate and headed to the platform.
Holding hands, of course.
Joto Station is one stop away.
…We’re already getting stared at.
Standing in the middle of the platform, we’re easy to notice.
Plus, Kirino-san’s stunning looks draw sneaky glances from passersby.
And since we’re holding hands, I’m getting attention too.
Man, these jealous stares feel so good~
Basking in the superiority, the train to Joto Station arrived.
It’s a weekend, so it’s pretty empty.
We sat together.
Holding hands, of course.
People stared at us on the train too.
Come on, hit me with more jealous glares!
The more you glare, the tastier my lunch gets!
After soaking up the attention, we arrived at Joto Station.
“Shall we grab lunch first?”
It’s just past noon.
Joto Station has tons of restaurants, but the food court is the easiest place to eat.
“Open seats… there!”
The food court is about three times bigger than our school cafeteria, but most seats are taken.
Miraculously, we found an open table.
“It’s super crowded, huh?”
Every table except ours was full, and some people were even eating standing up.
“What do you want to eat, Kiyoto-kun?”
“I’ll go with the ginger pork over there.”
It’s so crowded, we had to talk louder to hear each other even this close.
“I’ll get the steak bento over there. You go first, Kiyoto-kun.”
If we both went, someone might steal our stuff.
“Wow… what a line.”
There were about twenty people in front of the shop.
“How long’s this gonna take?”
I’m into masochism, but I’m not a fan of teasing or waiting games.
“…Hm? What’s that…?”
While looking around, I locked eyes with a girl in sunglasses… or maybe a woman, judging by her height.
She wasn’t looking for a table, just staring at me.
“…That’s kinda creepy.”
Is this one of those things where if I look away, she gets closer?
I tried to avoid her gaze by messing with my phone, and my turn came surprisingly fast.
“Come back when this rings.”
I ordered, took the buzzer every food court has, and went back to Kirino-san’s table.
“Now I’ll go line up.”
“Okay, see you.”
With Kirino-san gone, I fiddled with my phone alone.
I heard that shy guys at Starbucks get mocked and secretly filmed by popular kids while studying or using their phones. Is that true?
If it is, those popular kids have no morals.
But I’d totally welcome someone sneaking a photo of me and Kirino-san together.
“Which shop is Kirino-san lining up at?”
Looking for her, I locked eyes with that sunglasses girl again.
“I said it’s creepy.”
Is she closer than before?
I looked away for a second, then back at her.
Yeah, she’s definitely closer…
Wait, is there a girl besides Kirino-san and my sisters who has business with me?
Is this a yandere stalker?
Like the classic setup where she picks up my handkerchief, falls in love, and becomes a stalker.
Then, with a stun gun from who-knows-where, I wake up tied up in her house with a collar on.
“Collar… me with a collar put on by a girl…”
…Maybe I’ll ask Kirino-san later//
No, this isn’t the time for fantasies!!
She’s getting closer as we speak…
“Hey.”
…She’s already right in front of me.
