Chapter 1-44: Haruka’s Breakfast
More importantly, I need to make breakfast. What should I make? I wonder if the rice is cooked. I’ll put some soy sauce and sauce on it and make a soy sauce bowl. This is it.
As I was thinking about that, my smartphone notified me again.
It was a message from Haruka.
“Good morning! Can I come over now?”
“Sure, but why?”
“I thought I’d make you breakfast.”
Breakfast?
After a while, the doorbell rang.
Haruka, in her wheelchair, wearing casual clothes. Her outfit was coordinated in soft warm colors, and like her uniform, her short skirt revealed her one missing leg.
“I kind of had the impression that you’d eat poorly even on your days off, so I came over!”
“That’s rude. I was planning to make something myself.”
A soy sauce bowl.
“And there’s Rafio too. I thought he might not be used to cooking since he just got here. Leave it to me.”
Haruka, using crutches, entered the house carrying a shopping bag.
“Ah, good morning, Haruka!”
“Haruka! Help me! Do something about this kid!”
“Good morning to you both. I’ll borrow the kitchen.”
Rafio’s desperate cries went unheard, still held by Tsumugi.
On TV, a blue magical girl was fighting a monster.
Was it Miracle Shark? She grabbed the enemy’s neck with her eyes fixed, slammed it against the wall repeatedly, then pulled out a crude knife and aimed to stab it in the eye and gouge it out.
Miracle Force fights more aggressively than I thought.
Eventually, Miracle Force ended with the heroines dancing in the ending.
Next, a hero show called Tonfa Mask started. I didn’t know the recent mask series, but this is what it’s like now.
Tonfa is a pair of weapons with handles perpendicular to the sticks. Apparently, the hero uses them to fight.
“Tonfa Machine Gun!”
I thought, as Tonfa Mask held the tonfas like two pistols, firing continuous bullets from them.
The enemy’s henchmen were riddled with bullets, convulsing and falling down.
“Tonfa Punch!”
Tonfa Mask straddled a still-breathing fallen enemy and landed a series of punches from the mount position.
No, use the tonfas. This one’s also fighting quite fiercely.
Do you have to go this far to gain popularity with kids?
While thinking that, a good smell wafted from the kitchen.
I got curious about Haruka and went over. She was cooking skillfully on one leg, leaning against the wall or counter and sometimes relying on her crutches.
“That’s amazing.”
Haruka noticed my inadvertently muttered words and smiled at me.
“Isn’t it amazing? I thought it would be bad if I couldn’t do anything just because I’m in a wheelchair, so I decided to help my mom with various things.”
“So, you became good at cooking too.”
“In the kitchen, there are a lot of places to lean or hold onto, so it’s easy. Though, I’m not used to cooking in a new kitchen, so I have to be careful. At home, I can move much faster.”
“Seriously? That’s impressive. I mean, is the kitchen really that easy to use?”
“It’s narrow. Oh, but you have to be careful when using fire. And knives too.”
Despite her words, there were already chopped green onions on the cutting board.
“Put this in the pot. Also, I’m making tamagoyaki, so can you support me?”
“Support? Should I grab your shoulder?”
“That works, but it might interfere with my arm movements, so maybe my side would be better.”
“R-really? Is that how it is?”
I get the logic. I understand, but still.
“Don’t hesitate.”
“Got it. Excuse me then…”
I grabbed Haruka’s waist with both hands. She had a toned body from her track and field days, even though she had curves where it mattered.
“I appreciate the gentle touch, but it’s just tickling. You can hold me more firmly.”
“Even if you say that…”
“Don’t hesitate.”
“I will.”
“Hold me a bit tighter.”
“Okay, okay.”
I applied a bit more pressure.
While having such a conversation, the tamagoyaki was being made.
The square tamagoyaki pan was apparently something this house had. Haruka found it in the cupboard.
It was supposed to be something my mother used, but I didn’t even know about it. I only used the regular round frying pan to wake Aina up.
Now, it’s seeing the light of day like this. It feels kind of nostalgic.
When I conveyed that to Haruka, she smiled.
“It feels like time that was stopped is moving again.”
“Maybe so.”
“You didn’t know anything about the kitchen because you didn’t want to touch your mother’s memories, even though you’re in charge of cooking?”
“That is… I don’t think so.”
I couldn’t say for sure. Is that true? Was I cooking with such sentimental feelings?
No, I make simple dishes because I don’t want to spend too much time cooking.
“I understand the feeling. Was your mother a great person?”
“There’s no doubt about that.”
My mother was great. Since I was little, I loved my mother.
