Chapter 1-30: My School got Exposed
“Yuma! Push my wheelchair to the classroom today!”
“Why?”
“Because I want you to!”
At the bus stop, Haruka made this request.
My life has been filled with dealing with girls since this morning. I’ve always been involved with them, but it’s become more intense since getting wrapped up in the magical girl situation.
“Besides, I think we should be together at school from now on.”
“Why?”
“So we can move together quickly if monsters appear.”
“If monsters show up, I’ll contact you right away.”
Only Rafio can detect Fear-Eaters. Unless there’s a buzz online about a monster rampaging, we can’t rely on getting timely updates.
So, when Rafio notices something, I’ll contact Aina and Haruka, and we’ll head out. That was our plan.
“Yuuma, you’re too naive.”
Haruka said, wagging her index finger back and forth confidently. What was that gesture?
“If we’re heading out, it’s better to do it together. And it’s faster to talk in person than to contact each other by phone!”
She gave a thumbs-up with a smug look. I understood her point, though.
“For now, let’s eat lunch together!”
“I usually eat at the cafeteria, but do you?”
“I bring a packed lunch. What should I do?”
She hadn’t thought that far ahead.
“What about after school? Want to go out together? We didn’t get to buy clothes yesterday.”
“Rafio wants to go to the supermarket today.”
“I’m buying pudding. No interruptions.”
“Then let’s go to the city! There are specialty shops with delicious pudding.”
“Great idea, Yuuma! From now on, stick with Haruka whenever possible!”
“Alright, alright, calm down.”
“Ouch.”
Don’t cause a scene in front of unrelated people. A talking stuffed animal would create a commotion.
—
“Hey, doesn’t it seem noisy in front of the school?”
“I wonder why.”
Getting off the bus and heading towards school, we saw a crowd at the school gate.
There were people with large cameras, others holding microphones, and some with smartphones. Some were trying to enter the school, but teachers were desperately stopping them.
That must be…
“They’ve identified the school of the mysterious masked man helping magical girls.”
Rafio showed me the screen on his phone from inside the bag.
A video thumbnail displayed my photo with the text, “Identified! The High School of the Masked Man! Who is He?”
“With all those photos circulating on the news and the internet, it was only a matter of time.”
“Yeah. You’d better stay hidden.”
Rafio obediently retreated into the bag.
This was my fault. I had caused this. Reporters and YouTubers aiming for views had flocked to the school.
“It’s kind of exciting, being the center of attention.”
“You’re carefree, Haruka.”
“Haha, we have to be careful not to reveal our identities.”
“Excuse me, can we have a moment of your time?”
A man with a large camera approached.
He wasn’t addressing me but Haruka. The wheelchair made her stand out. Other camera operators and YouTubers with smartphones also pointed their cameras at us.
“Sure! Actually, I’m a magical girl! Yay! And this guy is the masked boy! We’re dating!”
“Hey, cut it out.”
What was she suddenly saying?
She casually mixed the truth with outrageous lies.
However, no one believed Haruka. The gathered crowd chuckled.
A one-legged girl being a magical girl was unthinkable to them.
“About half of the students at this school are magical girls! It’s true!”
“Come on, let’s go.”
“Ouch!”
I lightly chopped the top of Haruka’s head and hurried through the school gate.
Inside, everyone was talking about the commotion outside, but at least we managed to avoid the reporters and YouTubers.
In the school, I heard someone asking people to join a magical girl fan club. It was really established, huh.
“We’ve become quite famous, haven’t we?”
“Yeah. But about what you said earlier…”
“See? Nobody believes outrageous things even when said boldly.”
Pushing Haruka’s wheelchair to the classroom, she gave a thumbs-up with a smug look. Stop making that face.
“It was pointless. It would’ve been better not to say anything.”
“Why?”
“It draws attention. The more eyes on us, the greater the risk of our identities being exposed.”
If you want to stay unrelated, you need to avoid standing out.
Why did she suddenly say something like that anyway?
“Is that so? Maybe. Yeah, maybe you’re right.”
“Footage of a high school girl in a wheelchair talking about magical girls will definitely get people’s attention. It’ll almost certainly be shown on TV.”
While the media might avoid showing her face, YouTubers looking for fame wouldn’t show such consideration.
“I see… So I might be on TV, huh? And what I said too…”
“You’re carefree…”
I felt like I sighed and said the same thing earlier.
Is being on TV really that prestigious?
