Chapter 1-23: Magic Power in Her Legs
“Wha—? Huh!? My mouth is moving on its own. But this outfit is cute! And…”
Haruka cautiously moved her left leg, tapping it on the floor.
“Amazing. My leg really grew back…”
“Fiiiiaaaarrr!”
“! Don’t interfere!”
The Fear-Eater noticed Liner and recognized her as a threat capable of killing it. It rushed at Liner with child-like speed.
“Take this!”
Liner pivoted on her right leg and kicked the enemy hard with her new left leg.
Though quick, the Fear-Eater’s small body meant it was light. The kick sent it flying, crashing into the ceiling lights.
“Liner! Don’t break too many lights! To defeat it, you need to gather light into your leg!”
“Got it! …Into my leg?”
Liner seemed to struggle with Rafio’s explanation as she glared at the Fear-Eater, which had landed on the ground.
“Gather the light where the gem is set. For Saber—the pink magical girl—the gem is in her sword. For you, it’s in your leg!”
Her legs themselves were Liner’s weapon. Perfect for Haruka.
“Understood! So I just need to gather light in my leg while fighting!”
“Or, we’ll create an opening for you to gather light and then attack. Let’s go, Yuuma.”
“Yeah.”
I wrapped a towel around my face to make a mask and straddled Rafio. I also took off my blazer to conceal my identity.
A one-legged girl showed courage. How could I be scared?
I wasn’t a magical girl. Just a human. But with a magical girl, I wouldn’t lose.
“You two support each other well, like you and Aina. That’s one of your strengths.”
“Shut up and move.”
I didn’t mind Rafio’s lighthearted jab.
Rafio charged at the Fear-Eater, though not recklessly. The enemy also rushed towards Rafio, child-sized arms spread wide.
Despite its small size, the Fear-Eater likely had more than average strength. Past Fear-Eaters had similar abilities, and this one had already shown greater leg power than a child.
“Can we handle this?”
“I’ve seen its moves a few times. It has a pattern.”
While I was being scolded by Haruka, Rafio had been observing the Fear-Eater.
The Fear-Eater swiped at Rafio’s front legs with its arms, but Rafio leapt lightly over it, landing behind the creature.
The Fear-Eater quickly pivoted, instantly reversing direction with remarkable agility. Its braking ability was extraordinary.
“It’s not defying physics, just using brute leg strength to move. Even magical creatures can’t break physical laws.”
“It’s good to know physical attacks work on magical creatures. But we can’t kill it with just punches.”
“Right. We need a weapon to expose its core so Liner can destroy it. Something sharp enough to cut through its body.”
“I’ll look for something.”
Unlike the previous shopping center, there wasn’t much here that could be used as a weapon. This was just a clothing section in a department store.
“The stationery section or kitchenware might have something useful.”
The clothing section of the department store was unusually large, leading to this situation. The chances of the monster appearing here rather than another section were higher.
“Let’s move to another area. We might find something useful in other sections or the back area.”
“Should we start carrying knives?”
“Let’s not. It’d be problematic if someone found them.”
“Rafio, over here. This might work.”
A wooden shelf, broken by the Fear-Eater’s attack, had left behind sharp fragments. Originally a stylish display shelf, it was now a weapon.
“Fiiiaaarrr!”
The Fear-Eater charged again. Rafio leapt to dodge, but this time the Fear-Eater jumped too. With its powerful legs, it easily matched Rafio’s jump, swinging its child-sized arms.
Rafio couldn’t dodge mid-air. I leaned out from atop Rafio and thrust my makeshift weapon into the Fear-Eater’s path.
Instead of hitting Rafio’s side, its arm smashed into the wooden fragment. The weapon was destroyed, but it greatly reduced the force, allowing Rafio to land safely.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t thank me yet. Another attack is coming. Don’t jump to dodge this time.”
“I know. But that won’t be easy.”
“Fiiiaaarrr!”
The Fear-Eater charged again, swinging its arms wildly. Rafio watched, ready to dodge.
“Don’t forget about me!”
Liner’s intervention made it unnecessary.
With speed befitting her name, she kicked the Fear-Eater from the side. Her high sock-covered leg gleamed with stored light. Fully charged.
The Fear-Eater, hit hard from the side, crashed into a wall. It landed on the floor, glared at Liner, and started to run away from her to put some distance between them.
“Ha! I’m fast, fast!”
She wasn’t talking about the enemy but admiring her own legs.
Relishing the joy of running on two legs again, she chased after the fleeing Fear-Eater.
