Chapter 1-20: Outing with Haruka After School
In the end, due to my sister’s desperate resistance, we decided to wake up at our usual time tomorrow morning.
As the head of the household, I should listen to her a bit.
“I am not here. I do not exist…”
“Good morning, Yuuma-san!”
“Yikes!?”
“Morning. Feeling fluffy today?”
“Yes! Where is it?”
“Who knows?”
“I am not here. I do not exist…”
I glanced down at Rafio, who was futilely trying to hide himself from Tsumugi by pretending he didn’t exist.
Tsumugi seemed completely certain of Rafio’s existence. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s her sixth sense.
“Come on, you’ll be late. Get going.”
“Yes! I’m off!”
“Thank goodness. The devil has passed.”
“Oh, Yuuma-san! Can I come over to your house sometime?”
“I am not here. I do not exist!”
“Sure. Come anytime. Are your parents still too busy to come home?”
“Yes! I’m not lonely or anything, but Aina-san’s room is full of manga and I want to read more of them!”
I didn’t think she had that many, but Aina had been reading shoujo manga since she was little.
As I watched Tsumugi finally run off towards school, Rafio popped his head out of my bag.
“Is she not on good terms with her parents?”
“They rarely come home, but that doesn’t mean they’re not on good terms. They’re both working hard for Tsumugi’s sake.”
“I see. That’s a form of love too.”
Yes, work is important. Spending time with your daughter is equally important, but you can’t really compare the two.
I can’t have either of them.
“What do you think? Why don’t you cook for her sometime, Rafio? It’s important to have someone cook warm meals for her, right?”
“No. I refuse. Absolutely not. Host the enemy? Not a chance.”
He’s so stubborn.
After Rafio’s crisis passed, it was my turn to face one.
“Good morning, Yuuma! There’s a lot of speculation about the magical girl’s identity online, but no one knows for sure!”
Haruka greeted me energetically.
“You really want to become a magical girl that much?”
“Yep! I wonder if I can meet her somehow.”
“I don’t think you will.”
“Really? Maybe she’s closer than we think.”
Haruka gave me a mischievous smile. What was that about?
Meanwhile, Rafio was struggling to speak from inside my bag. My grip, which had been strengthened considerably over the past few days, held him in place.
“Hey Yuuma, wanna hang out after school today?”
“…Do you have something specific in mind?”
She wasn’t asking to just go home together. She wanted to go out.
“I want to buy clothes!”
“Clothes?”
“Yes! It’s going to get warmer soon, and I want to buy some clothes for summer.”
“I see. But you can go with your friends. Why me?”
“Yuuma, you just don’t get it. You need a guy’s opinion for these things. That’s how you become a popular girl!”
She gave me a thumbs up and a proud look.
“This will be my first summer without a leg! I want this summer to be the most exciting one yet!”
I couldn’t understand what Haruka was thinking.
She must have seen my confusion because she continued.
“What I mean is, I want to have a fun summer even as a girl in a wheelchair. I want to go to the beach and festivals and have all sorts of fun, just like any other girl.”
“I get it. Being normal is important.”
It was still early in the new school year, but Haruka was already thinking about summer.
“Right? And the first step to that is fashion!”
“Fashion.”
“Yes! Honestly, Yuuma, you’re the person who sees me in my wheelchair the most, right?”
“I wouldn’t know. The whole class sees you just as much.”
“No way. You’re the one who pushes me every day. Well, Rucchan and Natsumi do sometimes too, I guess.”
With her personality, Haruka had many friends in class. She had a wide circle of friends before losing her leg, and that hadn’t changed.
In terms of daily school life, it was probably her female friends who pushed her wheelchair more often. I only did it in the mornings.
Anyway, she could move her wheelchair on her own.
“But still! I want you to help me pick out clothes!”
“…Alright. I don’t have any plans today, so I’ll go with you.”
I wasn’t too keen on it, but as long as she didn’t bring up the magical girl topic, it would be fine.
Yesterday, the Fear-Eater didn’t show up as well, so it’s not really a daily thing. So I figured it would be okay.
Hey Rafio, don’t give me a thumbs up from inside the bag. Are you imitating Haruka? I’m not planning to make her a magical girl.
After school.
The area around the station, where there had been two consecutive days of monster attacks, had calmed down after a day without any incidents.
Trains were running without issue, and the shopping centers had resumed operations as best they could.
We headed to a city area a few stations away by train. If you wanted to watch a movie or do some serious shopping, this was the place to go.
Of course, it was also good for picking out clothes. Even though I wasn’t well-versed in fashion, I knew there were plenty of clothing stores.
There were commercial facilities attached to the station and a department store a few minutes’ walk away. Walking around the station, you could find many shops with specific clothing concepts or brands.
It seemed people were passionate about dressing up. It was a respectable hobby, but I didn’t understand it.
As long as the clothes fit, who cares?
“That mindset probably shows in your cooking too.”
Rafio whispered from my bag, noticing my lack of interest in clothing stores. I quickly shut the bag to silence him.
