Chapter 4: Sugar After Bitter
Part 1: Lunch After Game
It’s been a few days since the commotion with Kokoa’s mother. The aftermath of the midterm exam, which she had worked unusually hard on, had completely worn off, and she was back to her everyday routine.
After dinner, the two of us sat around playing a racing game.
“Oh-oh-oh no, why can’t I win?”
“That’s because you’re not very good at it, Kokoa. I mean, why is it that when you turn in the game, your body leans too?”
“Was I leaning…?”
“Yeah, about forty-five degrees.”
When I pointed this out, she froze with her mouth half open.
“No, I don’t think I did!”
“Yes, you did.”
Kokoa didn’t want to admit it, but she was leaning and swaying like crazy.
Her cheeks turned red…
“One more time. I won’t lose this time.”
“I don’t think it matters how many times you try.”
I’m not a big fan of this game, but I have a sort of intuition that I’ve developed with other games.
There was no way I would lose to Kokoa, who barely touched a game in her life.
We continued to play a few more times, but it ended in my overwhelming victory each time.
In fact, she couldn’t even beat the computer racing alongside her.
“Once more, once more. This time, I’ll make sure my body doesn’t lean!”
Just as she declared, her body no longer leaned when she came to a curve. But, the kart in the game didn’t turn either and went straight off the course.
“Hey, does this mean your character can’t turn unless you do?”
“…”
After repeatedly going off course, she finished the race with a much longer time than before.
For a while, she was in a daze with a stunned expression on her face, but then she put the controller down.
“I can’t win like this. I have to do some image training.”
“What do you mean by image training…? Don’t tell me…?”
“Of course, it’s training to keep my body from leaning in the curves!”
She clenched her fist and declared.
“I don’t know about you, but I think you can get better at the game regardless of your leaning.”
“But it’s embarrassing! So the first step is to be able to go around a turn without leaning over.”
“Let me tell you this, weren’t you worse when you turned without leaning?”
“This is how I will get stronger! I definitely will!”
I wonder if it’s necessary~…
It’s no special training, but… the day she becomes good at this game is still far away.
In the first place, is it possible to get good at a game by image training?
“I’ll do my best, and I will make sure that you’ll be crying in tears.”
“I’ve never heard anyone actually say that.”
“Well, tell me that when I win.”
“You’re going to make me say it?”
It was just about time, so we took a break, and I saw her off to the door.
“I’ll see you tomorrow. Oh, that’s right. The salmon was cheap so we will be having a salmon for lunch tomorrow.”
“Really? That’s great.”
“Fufufu, look forward to it.”
She left with a cheeky smile on her face.
As I saw her off, I got excited thinking about my favourite salmon lunch that I will have tomorrow.
