Kokoa prepared a bowl of porridge for me.
It wasn’t a simple, low effort rice dish. it was garnished with eggs, shiso* and a small amount of chicken, it must’ve taken a lot of effort.
There was a faint smell of ginger, giving the taste a tinge of saltiness, but my stomach was weak and my body was wrecked by fever, leaving me lacking an appetite. It was just the best suited meal for me… it helped my body a bit but knowing the effort and care she put into it healed my mind even more.
“Delicious.”
“That’s good to hear.”
Kokoa replied in a monotone manner, as if she didn’t care about my thoughts.
However, she kept staring at me, making it kind of hard to eat.
”Is it really that interesting to watch me eat?”
Kokoa noticed and looked away.
“… Yeah. You’re making such a weird face.”
“Seriously! I don’t think my face is that bad.”
I guess next time I’ll have to eat while staring at a mirror to fix that.
”Putting that aside, could you tell me? Do you really cook at home and how’d you even survive, I don;t see any ingredients in the fridge.”
“Not really, it’s a hassle these days. It’s mostly cup noodles. It’s not like I can’t cook. Sometimes I cook it with plain rice.”
“So, are you telling me that you’ve been living on cup noodles and rice bowls?”
“No, sometimes it’s round noodles with rice. I also mix it with half-priced croquettes.”
“For god’s sake, buy some natto and eggs from the convenience store. Consuming only the carbohydrates is not good for your health. You won’t have the right nutrition if you don’t eat good food. And you won’t have the energy to do anything if your situation gets worse.”
Like this time…
“Even your room is dirty. It’s easy to get sick in this environment. You need to clean it up regularly.”
“You don’t have to be so brutal towards a sick man.”
“It’s been a while since I came here, so I’m tempted to make some comments. Well, I guess you’ll have to get back in shape. When you recover, let me clean it up.”
“What do you mean, you’re going to do it?”
“You won’t clean up all those places, right? Also, you should get a health check-up.”
“Oh… I won’t go to the hospital.”
“Have you been there?”
“No.”
I didn’t even think about going to the hospital because I assumed it was just heartbreak.
“I knew you’d say that, after all Yu, I know a lot about you.”
Kokoa used to say these lines…
“I don’t think I’ve heard that in a while.”
She often speculated something about me, and she said it with great pride.
“Because it’s been a while since I’ve talked to you.”
“Is that so?”
Haha, she chuckles.
Oh yeah! That’s right.
We’re talking after a long time. I almost forgot about it because of how naturally we behaved right now, as if all that time spent apart mattered not.
After I finished the porridge and took my pills, Kokoa took the dishes sink and started to wash them.
“You don’t have to wash the dishes for me.”
“It bothers me. It’s filthy if it’s left to rot in the sink. Yuu should rest.”
Eventually, Kokoa finished washing up and said as she opened the fridge.
”I’ve left a sports drink and some fruit jelly inside. There’s also a pack of rice that I bought just in case. I’ve cut the leftover ingredients into pieces and put them in a Tupperware box, so you can cook them together in hot water and eat them as porridge.”
“Wait, wait, You bought all that stuff for me?”
“You know, I thought that one time food is not enough for a sick person like you.”
*Silence*
“Thank you, but I don’t have any cash right now, can you wait until tomorrow?”
“I just bought it for a sick person. If you want to repay the favour, then you should buy something for me next time.”
“I’m gonna buy you a nice bubble tea.”
[TN: タピオカドリンク]
“I’d rather have ice cream. Well, to repay me, you’ll have to get well soon.”
After saying that, Kokoa stood up.
”Well, I’d better go home now. If I stay too long, it will only worsen your condition.”
“I don’t want you to catch my illness.”
“I’ll wash my hands and gargle when I get home, so don’t worry. Bye then.”
Kokoa walks out of the room.
After seeing her off, I locked the door and dove back into bed.
For a while, I stared at a familiar token on the desk gifted by my ex-girlfriend. Now my mind was stable enough to not be unnerved by looking directly at it.
I turned off the light, closed my eyes, and a wave of drowsiness immediately struck me, either from the meal or the medication.
The turmoil my mind had been going through in the past eventually faded, and I rested my consciousness within the sweet dreamscape that slowly took me away.
