Visiting Day

Ding dong, the doorbell rings.

I look up from the novel I’m reading and look at the time, it shows 12.50 PM.

I told Kisaragi ‘You can come by at 1PM, I’ll be ready around that time’. It is ten minutes early, but I’m sure it’s her, it’s not surprising for her to come earlier.

“Uwa, eh!?”

I just thought of something bad, I quickly leave the living room and head to the front door. However, I’m too late.

“Yes.”

I hear my mom heading toward the front door, and the next thing I hear is the front door opening. My steps are slowing down as I give up hope that I will make it in time.

Why didn’t I get up and open the door immediately. This is exactly what regret always come late means.

“Hello.”

The familiar bright voice echoed through the house. I feel happy to hear her voice, but that’s not what I should to be concerned about now.

“Hello.”

What I should be concern about now is my mom meeting Kisaragi for the first time. Even from her one-word greeting, I can sense her confusion. I hope she doesn’t say anything rude to Kisaragi… All I can do is watch them from afar with trepidation.

“Excuse me, who are you?”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Nao Kisaragi, a classmate of Hokuto-san. I’m always indebted to Hokuto-san.”

“Ah, thankyou very much for your kindness. Thank you for always taking care of Hokuto. What brings you here today?”

“I came here today to ask Hokuto-san help me with my study. I’m sorry to bother your holiday. I brought something for you, it’s not much… but please enjoy it if you’d like to.”

“Oh, dear.”

“Ah, Hokuto-san! Hello!”

I’m watching her from a distance at the doorway, but she seems to see me there. She smiles and waves at me, it’s as if she found someone in a hide and seek game. I wave back at her as I approach the front door.

“H-Hey.”

I stuttered at my words because I feel really nervous.

“What’s wrong? Are you having a cold? I can come another time if you want.”

“Ah, no, no! It’s fine, I don’t have a cold. Let’s go upstairs, shall we?”

“Sorry for the intrusion!”

I ask her to put on the guest slippers and invite her upstairs to my room.

“This is Hokuto-san’s room…!”

I wonder what is the thing in my room that make her eyes sparkling like that? With that thought in mind, I pull out a chair for her.

“I’ll bring you some tea and snacks. You can take out your study materials while you wait.”

“Okay.”

I overcome my desire to stare at her cuteness while sitting on a chair, and head to the kitchen.

Sure enough, my mom is standing there at the kitchen. I thought I’m going step on a landmine no matter what I say, so I open the fridge without even looking at her.

“Do you know who that beautiful girl is?”

My mom always asks terrible questions from the beginning.

“Ki-Kisaragi is…”

“What is your relationship with her?”

Yup, that is definitely a landmine.

“…lovers.”

I’m not sure if I should be honest or not, but if I lie, it would be harder to explain it later. Considering the future, I think it would be best to honest.

“Really!?”

“Why are you doubting me?”

“Because you only invited Mikinori to come before, you know? But if she’s your girlfriend, then I have no reason to worry.”

She is absolutely right, I had never invited anyone but Mikinori to come to my house. I have no way to argue with her.

“But Kisaragi really is my girlfriend.”

I said so while looking straight into my mother’s eyes. All I can do is hope her to believe me.

“Well, okay then.”

I pat my chest in relief as my mother backed down more easily than I expected.

“I’ll be home all day, you know?”

She said so as I’m about to take the tea and snacks upstairs. I turn around and wonder what she is talking about.

“I know, you told me this morning.”

My mother’s eyes feel really warm as she turns around and look at me.

“…what?”

“Nothing.”

“Huh…”

Then I return to my room with some tea and snacks for Kisaragi.
