Tangerine Jelly Day

I gave her a bag of tangerine jelly. Her eyes expression said like ‘what is it?’

“Tangerine jelly, if you don’t want it, you can just throw it away.”

When she realized I just gave her those tangerine jellies, she shakes her head, and she looks really happy. I guess she really love tangerines.

“Thank you. I really like tangerine related foods.”

Well, that’s a good thing to hear. She immediately opened one and ate a mouthful of the tangerine jelly. I saw it at the convenience store just now, I thought she liked tangerines so I bought it for her.

“Well, maybe next time we can go to a place that sells tangerine cakes.”

When I said that to her, her eyes widen in surprise, was it really surprising?

“I’m not sure how say it, but if I’m going out with you, I’m sure I’ll relax and enjoy myself.”

“Why is that?”

“If I’m going out with you, I won’t hear other people’s thoughts when I’m on the street. It’s really wonderful. Oh, then I haven’t seen a movie in a long time. What movie is being released now? Do you have any films you’d like to see, Hokuto-san?”

She was really looking forward to it. I couldn’t tell her that I don’t know a place that sells tangerine cakes.

“We can go after the next test. You don’t have to worry about the money, let me take care of it.”

She was so excited as if she had decided and planned everything that she couldn’t hear any of my suggestions. Well, I don’t mind about it.

“I’m not that broke, I don’t have to ask a girl to buy me a drink.”

“I see, that’s right.”

“So, can I ask you something?”

“Yes, what is it?”

“Can I really block most of your ability?”

“Oh, I haven’t told you yet?”

She has.

“I’ll let it slide this time.”

She told me about it in rough detail.

“You’re right. Well now is a good opportunity. Let’s talk about it in detail.”

She took out a piece of paper and pen as she finished a cup of the tangerine jellies. She is going to explain it in detail to me now. She seemed to be in a good mood, perhaps it’s because of the tangerine jellies. I’m glad I bought three of them, they run out really fast.

“Well…”

“Yes.”

“Although I said my ability could read other people’s mind, but it’s like I naturally know what they are thinking. I told you the other day that it’s almost like they are flowing directly into my brain, right?”

“Yeah, you told me that.”

“Then, when you are within two meter radius with me, I can’t hear other people’s thoughts but yours.”

I know that. I mean, is there something more than that?

“This two meter radius is Hokuto-san’s radius.”

“My radius?”

“The radius depends on each person.”

“…that’s new to me.”

It is quite an important information.

“Some thoughts even can be heard from 50 or 100 meters away, while others, like Hokuto-san, can only be heard when you are really close to me. ”

“That’s just how it is right?”

“Right, I don’t know what makes the radius wider or smaller.”

There’s no way to know for sure, and I guess that’s just how it works. But I think if I’m hearing everyone’s thoughts within my two meter radius, it would be noisier than I thought.

“Well, I’m just used to it. That’s all.”

“What, that’s all?”

The explanation was quite simple after all, despite the fact that she began explaining it vigorously. At the end, she didn’t even use the paper or the pen.

“By the way, about our schedule.”

She’s really looking forward to it. Ah, she is going to use the paper and the pen for this. She is writing some things down.

“I’ll let you decide where are we going to go. I’ll try my best to fit into your schedule.”

“That’s perfect! Well then, as soon as the test is over, I’ll put together the best plan ever, and I’ll have Hokuto-san take a look at it, then we can decide on the details.”

“You don’t need to make a plan for it, its not a big deal.”

That being said, seeing she smile happily and enjoying herself, made me feel a little excited. I was starting to enjoy myself as well.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

“Yes, me too.”

I played some music from a music player while listening to the radio on my smartphone. Finally, I turned on the TV and listened to all of them for 5 minutes. I wondered if I should add more sound, but from the moment I started hearing all of them, it was too loud. Within five minutes, my head began hurt more and more. She is being forced to listen to more sounds than this, for twenty four hours a day. If it was me, I would not be able to stand it. She seems like she is not bothered by it, but I wonder if she is pretending to be strong, or maybe some of her senses has been numbed by it. Either way, I can’t understand how she feels.

Its not like I don’t want to understand. But still, I am sure even after knowing this much, I will not know how she feels. Well, I hope it doesn’t end up badly for her. All I can do is just let things be.
