She is Reading My Thoughts Again Today - Chapter 39
Sports Festival Day
I tear away the ‘DANGER’ warning sign which is blocking my way and continue to go upstairs. She noticed me by hearing my footsteps, she let out a huge sigh which almost can be heard to the very bottom floor.
“Did you forget your lunch again?”
She holds up her bento in front of her as she said it.
“No, I didn’t forget it today.”
I just don’t want to eat in a noisy and hot classroom filled with the heat of the sports festival.
“Come on, it’s fine right? At times like this.”
“I’m a little worried because we’re talking about a high school boy who couldn’t survive the day without eating anything for his lunch.”
“Can we please forget about that.”
“Yeah, sure. I’m getting tired talking about it.”
That’s for the best. I sit at a distance from her so that she can’t read my thoughts. She is holding her bento in her hand.
“Do you make your bento by yourself?”
She seems to have egg rolls and sausages inside her bento. Perhaps its because she is eating it, but it looks strangely delicious.
“Yeah, that’s right. But most of it are just frozen food.”
“Just the fact that you made your own bento is very impressive.”
If you open my bento, you will notice that it’s nicely packed. It’s because I didn’t make my own bento, my mom made it for me.
“I’ve done it a few times now, I don’t know why but I just couldn’t pack my bento nicely.”
“You’ll get used to it, you just have to make your own bento every day.”
“I guess so. Well, Itadakimasu.”
Then both me and Kisaragi silently eat our bento. When I finished eating, I looked at Kisaragi and our eyes met. She is putting her chopsticks into her chopstick case, it seems that she had just finished eating as well. When I put my hands together, she hurriedly put her hand together as well.
“Gochisosamadeshita.”
(‘Gochisosamadeshita’ is a Japanese phrase that means ‘thankyou for the food.’)
I never thought that we would eat our lunch together. It feels kind of strange. I put my bento into my bag and take out a cup of tea.
“Is Mikinori in charge of the cheerleader team?”
“Ahh yeah, he is good at it, really. I heard they’re going to perform some kind of flying kick or spinning kick show in the afternoon.”
“Woah, that sounds fun!”
From her overreaction, I can sense her high expectations for Mikinori. It seems that she is attracted by his friendliness. As a friend, I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
“Come to think of it, why is Hokuto-san so close to Mikinori?”
She smiles gracefully as she eats her after-lunch tangerine. I stare at her as she peels the tangerine. She offered me some.
“No thanks.”
Then she puts a couple slice of tangerines into her mouth.
“It is simply because we have known each other for so long.”
“Even if you have known each other for a long time, usually some relationships will drift apart when you aren’t in the same class.”
I guess that is just how most relationships work. Rather, at the beginning of my second year, I was sure it would happen. Unlike me, he has a lot of friends around him even when he changes classes. He would have no problem without me. But thankfully I was wrong, I’m very happy that I can still talk with him on a daily basis
“I think we really understand each other because we’ve known each other for so long, and I think that’s why we want to talk to each other on a daily basis even when we’re in different classes.”
I’m sure Mikinori thinks the same.
“That’s nice.”
“No, not really. I sometimes get funny looks from people because we usually talk about something useless.”
I wonder if I ever talk something useless with Mikinori like that in front of her.
“Ah…”
“What?”
“We only got five minutes before the meeting.”
“You’re joking!”
I grab my bag and run down the stairs as fast as I can.
“What about the afternoon competition!?”
“It’s a mess!”
