She is Reading My Thoughts Again Today - chapter 19
Bread Day
‘m going upstairs to contemplate my stupidity. As I’m going to the top floor, I spot her shadow. The sound of my slippers must have made her aware of my presence, then she turns her attention to me and our eyes meet.
“Hello.”
“Hello? What’s the matter? I can’t believe you are here. Is there anyone you usually spend lunch with?”
While looking away from her gaze, I sit down on the same step as her.
“I’m busy with my manuscript.”
“Manuscript?”
“A novel manuscript. Tomorrow is the deadline for the submission.”
I turned my attention to the paper on her hand. Then I realized she hasn’t written anything on her manuscript yet.
“I’m not sure about this, but should I skip lunch today?”
“Don’t worry about it, you got enough time.”
“I see. So, what brings Hokuto-san here?”
“Please share your lunch with me.”
I sat down at the stairs and bowed my head down. It may be a dust-filled staircase, but I couldn’t care less.
By the time I realized I didn’t bring my lunch, I ran to the cafeteria as fast as I could to buy some food, but there was nothing left, all of them had sold out. I had no idea buying lunch is like going for an all-out war.
“I know what I’m asking is a bit much. But please, share your lunch with me, just the rice is fine.”
I am fully aware that I’m a high school student, but I don’t think I could make it through the day without eating anything for lunch.
“Could it be Hokuto-san, you don’t have any other friend you can ask for?”
“Right now?”
It’s not like I’m avoiding people to be friends with, but the only person who is close enough with me to ask him to share his lunch is Mikinori.
“This time, I can’t rely on Mikinori, so I’ve come to rely on you, Kisaragi-san.”
“Don’t say my name like that, drop the attitude.”
She is serious about it, I can see it in her eyes. I know she wanted to tell me not to call her name pleadingly only at times like this, but I am in no position to ask her to share her lunch with me arrogantly, so please understand.
With a sigh, she says,
“Well, it can’t be helped then. I brought 3 buns of bread today, so I’ll share two with you.”
“You’re going to give me two?”
“I mean, you’re a high school boy, right?”
…she could tease me in the future because of this. But under these circumstances, I guess I have no other choice, so I straightened my back and looked at her.
“Please buy some tangerine jellies at the convenience store on your way home.”
“Sure, I’ll buy 10 of them.”
While denying the obvious fact that she had relaxed her cheeks by slapping them, she reached for her bag. Then she brings out a melon bread, a chocolate bread and…?
“It’s a Panini.”
“Panini.”
I’ve never heard anything about a bread called ‘panini’ before.
“I don’t know why it is called ‘panini’ either, if you are curious, you can look it up later on the Internet or something. It has ham, cheese and tomatoes in it.”
So, it’s like a sandwich. it sure sounds interesting, but I’m not sure if I want to eat it or not.
“So, which one would you like?”
“In a situation like this, I think Kisaragi is the one who should choose first.”
“I like them all, so please pick something that Hokuto-san can eat.”
“…then, the melon bread and the chocolate bread.”
“Are you sure you don’t want the panini?”
“I haven’t had a panini before, so I don’t want it because I don’t know what it tastes like.”
“Okay then. Here you go.”
“Thank you.”
Then I gratefully accept the melon bread and chocolate bread. The buns looks several times more delicious than usual, maybe it is because I’m really glad to have something to eat for lunch.
“Ah.”
“What?”
“I bought those yesterday, so they might be a little tough.”
“It should be fine. Well, itadakimasu.”
“…itadakimasu”
She said in a small voice.
Delicious. That is all I can say.
“Do you always eat here?”
“Yes. Do you see the ‘KEEP OUT’ sign?”
“Yeah, I saw it.”
There was a ‘KEEP OUT’ sign placed on the staircase blocking the path. I peeled it off in disgust and threw it into the trash can. But in the end, apparently it was her who placed the sign there.
“Are you stupid?”
“There is also a ‘DANGER’ sign there.”
“Yup, you are stupid.”
“Isn’t that cool…?”
She looked at me and asked with an anxious look on her face.
Her face, her expression, her eyes. I don’t want her beautiful face filled with an expression like that.
“I’m sorry. If you think it’s cool, then I have no right to deny it.”
“What were you thinking just now?”
“You know what I was thinking about!? If I’m you I wouldn’t want to go into that topic too deep!”
“Well, Hokuto-san is a high school boy after all. It can’t be helped.”
Ah, it’s a bad one, but I find myself strangely calm while eating the chocolate bread.
“It’s not like what you think, it’s just because of the situation, okay?”
“I know. Hokuto-san loves ‘obedient young sisters’, right?”
I really hate her for teasing on me like this. But it is my fault after all. I forgot to bring my lunch.
From tomorrow onwards, I will get up as soon as the alarm rings. That is my resolution from tomorrow on.
